“Will stay again”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2014

We booked based on price and location and were not disappointed. For the price we paid, my expectations were exceeded. Yes, the furnishings could use an update but on the other hand, the place was clean and I will take old over dirty any day. We only stayed a single night for a quick trip to the city so not much feedback on anything else. But both my daughter (20 year old) and I agree that we would stay there again for the price.

After an exhaustive search, we found this hotel in our price range. It was really affordable for the excellent location, just a stone's throw from Central Park. You can also pick up a bus or subway entrance within 2 blocks. There was a great coffee shop nearby as well. Clean white duvets. Pleasant lobby and staff.
Now, the downside - there were absolutely no extras here. No complimentary breakfast. I never found a nice machine despite being given a bucket. We had towels but no washcloths. The carpets were filthy. The a/c was a small, outdated window unit so the room felt hot and stuffy. The bathroom was way too cramped for three guests to get in and out of. There is an elevator but two people with one suitcase each will be stuffed like sardines. We had to wait a long time for it to travel up and down the 8 floors to our room.
Despite the below average amenities, I would use this hotel again because you just can't beat the location! You're only there to sleep and shower anyway.

Room Tip: Try for a floor close to ground level to avoid the cramped elevator.

I stayed here with my husband on the last part of our honeymoon. We chose this hotel because it was across the road from Central Park and close to the subway. It's also not far from the museum of natural history and the tour bus did a fairly close stop.

The room was clean and free of any kind of bugs. Housekeeping cleaned up and left fresh towels every day. The furniture and room in general was a bit shabby and in need of updating. The two main problems we had were 1) The air conditioning was very loud. We came back one day and it had been turned to low. We didn't realise and had two very overheated nights!
2) The door lock. The key wouldn't turn and we had to go back down to reception. Someone came up and "showed us" how to do it. This happened a couple more times but each member of staff struggled with the door and every time it was fixed, it still didn't work. On day 4, the handle broke off in my husband's hand. It was then fixed properly. This doesn't seem too bad when i think about it now, but at the time after a long (11 hour) flight and each day when we got in, it was awful.

I'm not bothered about the view, but we did have a view of the park. The windows were dirty though.

That said, the reception staff were really helpful with everything. they showed us the routes to get on the subway and gave directions. There was always someone available, at all hours which made us feel safe.

You can get a shuttle service to the airport which is much cheaper than taxis and was very good.

Overall, if you need a basic room and the park is a big part of your visit, then this is ideal for you.

We got a room at the11th floor facing Central Park but filthy windows blocked the view, the carpet was disgusting and a chair's cushion was torn. Finally, the room had no air condition but an old noisy window unit so the sleeping quality was poor. In the positive end, the staff was friendly and helpful. While the location is close to two subway stations it is not the best place if you want to go to Mid and Downtown but it is great for walking central park and Upper West side.

I loved the location of this hotel - being on Central Park was a real plus for me. The beds were comfortable, the service was good, and the rooms were clean. We stayed in two different rooms - 2 beds (no view) and then 1 bed (view of the park). Both rooms were fine. They were roomy enough and had decent showers and TV was fine. I was with my son who was moving into Columbia, and this was very convenient. I had a take out dinner from the Deli up the street - they were very nice. I ate in Central Park as it was a gorgeous day. The subway stop is a block away - very convenient. If you want to be in the center of the action, don't stay here. If you want to be in a little quieter part of Manhattan, but near a subway station, and near Central Park, this place is great.

Very good hotel for the price -- rooms small, but in NYC you never spend time in your room! Located close to the subway and central park, it's a great base for any trip to NYC! Room were clean, and the staff were incredibly helpful! Definitely recommend this hotel!

The service at Astor was truly terrific! They helped us locate the subways and provided maps with very good directions. When i ran to the next door convenience store and came back with a cake they asked what i was doing and i said that i had bought a birthday cake for my fiance. They gave me some candles and all came to my door to sing my partner 'a happy birthday'! They were just so friendly! The location is literally facing Central Park! The rooms are small, but extremely clean with a good sized bed and bathroom. It's only a few blocks to the subway which takes about a 5 minute walk and takes you all the way down the west side of manhattan. They also had an airport shuttle. I would definitely visit this hotel again!
