We stayed at the Hotel Metro for a week in January 2005 for our honeymoon and to be honest, there wasn't another hotel we'd have rather stayed at unless we had a bottomless pit of money, then the Plaza or Waldorf would've been nice.

We had a penthouse suite on the top floor which was comfortable and warm, but not quite what I would consider a suite. It did have the advantage of being down the corridor from the roof terrace, which has a fantastic view of the Empire State Building and overlooks Macy's.

A 'help yourself' bagel, pastry and muffin breakfast included in the price is good and coffee on tap 24/7 was a blessing. We didn't use the restaurant or bar so I couldn't comment on them other than they looked nice. The other facility we bypassed was the gym - just too exhausted after all the sightseeing.

Renovations on the lower floors and, at the end of our stay, the lounge, didn't really cause us any problems as we were out most of the time. The only real problem we did encounter was a blocked toilet, but this was fixed immediately and efficiently. We found the staff a little abrupt but again, we were out so much this didn't really bother us.

What really makes this hotel is it's location. Situated on West 34th between 5th Avenue and Broadway it's within touching distance of Macy's (which has a fantastic restaurant in the basement) and Herald Square, a 2 minute walk to the Empire State Building and a 10 minute amble to Madison Square Gardens, the Flatiron, the Chrysler Building and Times Square, to name but a few. We walked pretty much everywhere due to it's location. Central Park is a 30 minute walk up 5th Ave, taking in the Rockefeller Centre and some fantastic shops on the way. A bus from Herald Square will take you down Broadway to Battery Park via Union Square, Greenwich Village, Noho, Soho, Little Italy and the Financial District. For swifter travel there's a subway station at Herald Square, and Penn Station and Grand Central are both a short walk away.

For those wanting luxury and finesse this hotel wouldn't be a good choice, but if you want a fantastic location and an inclusive breakfast for not a lot of money, Hotel Metro is ideal.

I was really pleased with this hotel. It is in a great location, 2 mins from Macys, and the Empire State Building a stones throw away (great view from the roof terrace). When we first arrived the room we was given was really tiny, we could'nt even get into the wardrobe, but when I asked for a change of room there was no problem and we was given a larger one. The staff were very helpful and friendly, even giving me an umbrella when it was raining. Tea and coffee are avaliable all day, and the continental breakfast is served until 11-30am. Maybe the rooms could do with a little 'cheering up' but it would not put me off staying there again. There is a large T.V in the room with at least 20 channels, and the rooms are cleaned and towels changed daily. They will store your luggage for you of you have a late check out.

My first time in NYC and was really happy with the hotel i picked. Maceys is on the doorstep which is great when you have lots of bags to carry!! Small, yet friendly hotel and the free breakfast in the morning is really handy, offering toast, yogurts, cereal, muffins and bagels etc etc. Also, free tea and coffee all day every day.
Rooms were spacious with a good sized bathroom and double shower, and the rooms had maid service every day. (new towels fresh sheets every day).
Our room faced onto the main road so early hours of the morning was noisy when refuge collectors came round (for example!)
Just over a five minute walk to time square but central park was a good twenty minutes away-not appreciated in freezing cold temperatures!!(so get a taxi)
Most of the hotel staff were friendly, although didn't go the extra mile!
Also close by was a cinema and american eateries for evenings out.
For those who like Maceys, if you go to the welcome desk you will get a discount voucher which you can use in conjunction with any other discounts that they have at the time!
Other tips for those that like to see musicals........ Go to the TICKET booth in Time Square for 3pm and you can get upto 50% off shows for that evening, although i would suggest getting there abit before 3 as the queues can be very long (we queued for 1hr 30mins but well worth it)
Would definetly recommend this hotel for those seeking a good hotel in a fab location!!

This is an average hotel for NYC. The location is great and there are some good restaurants right next door, try the Korean places to the right of the entrance. However, the hotel is in need of a renovation. The couches in the lobby all have torn fabric and are straight out of the 80s. The rooms are small and are in desperate need of a renovation as well. The bathroom was tiny and the shower/bath was stained from years of use. Overall, it was pretty clean, though our room wasn't serviced until after 5pm.

It's not a bad hotel overall, especially for the price. I would recommend somewhere else though if you want something really nice for a little bit more.

Stayed at Hotel Metro from Dec 19 to 22 2005. Like most people we chose this hotel because of Tripadvisor reviews and couldn't have been happier. We have teens aged 15 and 17 so had requested interconnecting rooms which we were given. Although the twin room was bigger both it and the double room were a great size, with plenty of room for a dresser, large bedside tables plus a fridge and a table and two chairs. Bathrooms were very clean with huge showers. The decor was very art deco. As we were only on the third floor bit noisy at night but then this city really never sleeps! The complimentary breakfast was a great bonus and the public areas all very nice. We had tickets for NY Rangers ice hockey at MSG and Spamalot and both were within a 5-10 minute walk, as was Empire State Building and our favourite shop Macys. Would definitely stay here again!

We were in NYC during the transit strike. The Hotel Metro turned out to be the best location for going uptown and downtown. Travelled w/ husband and 17 and 19 year old kids. Got the family suite. A little pricey but
NYC is pricey. Great to have a breakfast right there so we Floridians didn't need to freeze our buns off to get a cup of coffee or cocoa in the morning. The doorman is worthy of extra praise and a big tip when you leave. He was pleasant, helpful and kind. They gave us room 1002 and one room had a view of Herald Square and the lights at Macy's and the other room had a view of the Empire State building. NYC tips- I emailed MTV several months prior to arrival and got my kids tix to be in the audience. At Christmas they give all audience members a free gift. They got new digital cameras. Within walking distance (15 minutes) on 2nd ave and 35th is a diner called the Gemini Diner. I read a review on menu pages and thought we'd check it out. My kids could care less about fancy restaurants and I hate chains. It was reasonable priced , had awesome food and a huge selection. And homemade desserts. We walked alot, spent alot but had a fantastic time.

I was pretty confident in booking the Hotel Metro after reading reviews on this site. However, I just got back from my stay in NYC, and I was amazed with this hotel. For the price of $147 a night (on expedia), you can't beat this hotel. The lobby is nice, it has a restaurant and a bar, and the continental breakfast and the room it was in was great. Our room was surprisingly big, especially considering NYC hotel standards. It was spotless, including the bathroom and refidgerator. As for location, we were interested in seeing Times Square, Rockefellar Center, and a musical in the theatre district. We were able to walk to all of these places from the hotel (especially considering the transit strike while we were there) within 12 minutes. It is in a great location, the street it is on has several restaurants, and you can see Macy's/Herald Square from just outside the front entrance. Overall, this hotel is amazing for its price range and I would recommend it to anyone.
