“Creepy and Corrupt - Stay Somewhere Else!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2013

Relative to other New York hotels, the nightly rate at the Gershwin may attract you. If you're not familar with New York, don't believe the "hype" -- Stay somewhere else! The Gershwin -- which has been taken over by a foreign, money-grubbing, off-site corporate conglomerate -- is an old (over) rated 2 star hostel -- not hotel -- with old, creepy with 19th Century flea market and dumpster retrieved furniture and furnishing which is being passing off as "unique design elements reminiscent of pre-war New York décor... [with] art work from various artists is displayed in the room." [--] to the maximum! What you get are a few 50 year old, paint-pealing, Andy Warhol reproductions of "Marilyn".

The only attraction to this well-worn "creepy-hollow" is the location on 27th. There are no guest amenities except a brick of a bed and a "tempermentally" flushing toliet that runs over at-will in what is called a bathroom with a painted-shut window! Guest are treated like inmates rather than paying clientele (at a not-so-cheap rate of $300/pn)! The staff's "I don't care if you ever come back" attitude is -- as a world traveler who have stayed in some of the best.. and some really bad hotels through the world -- I can say with certainty is among the worse I've ever endured anywhere!

New York has far too many nicer hotels which offer real amenities and with staffs who have been trained how to treat guests. If you want to enjoy your NY experience stress-free, do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else!

Dear Cassieisqueen :

I’m incredibly disappointed you had an unpleasant experience. Our goal is to exceed guest’s expectations by providing a comfortable environment with exemplary service.

I understand The Gershwin was not to your liking and your expectations haven’t been met; however we are excited our hotel has transitioned to private room accommodations. We are committed to grow until we achieve perfection.

I’m looking forward to discuss your stay further if you could please contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Older style rooms but clean and confortable. Friendly helpful staff. Good location in mid town Manhattan not far from empire state.
Tip: Skip the sex museum on the corner you would learn as much in high school sex education class.

I stayed in this hotel with two friends in September 2013 and we all agreed that the beds were the most comfortable beds we had ever slept in. Our rooms are fine, bathrooms needed some attention and the shower wasn't great but for the price it was great value. The staff are great too.

We visited NYC in August 2013 and chose The Gershwin Hotel to stay at during our trip.
The price was pretty decent based on other hotels in Manhattan and the location seemed pretty central for all the sights we wanted to visit. We stayed in a Superior Room and my only complaint was that it was pretty small but it was clean and the bed was comfortable. I read some online claims of this hotel having bedbugs but I didn't see any sign of this and the mattress had a cover around it so we weren't worried. The free Wi-Fi was hit and miss but eventually it would work. The hotel might need some updating or some cosmetic TLC but that's about it. There was scaffolding on the exterior so we assume there was some remodelling being done. The staff was very friendly and we took advantage of the valet parking so we didn't have to worry about our vehicle during our stay. The subway is very close and taxis are cheap so The Gershwin Hotel was a good choice for us.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade from the Superior Room. A member of our group got an upgrade and the room was con...

The Gershwin is a great little hotel that is in a great location and has its own quirky character.

Located within a short walk to the flatiron district (lots of trendy cafes) and right near a subway it is very convenient. The hotel itself is quite good, modern and has
A cafe downstairs with great coffee (though a bit expensive).

The rooms themselves are very small and the shower/bathrooms are very old and could do with a renovation. However, this adds to the character I suppose. Some nights we also had no hot water. There is minimal street noise from only a few floors up.

Overall we liked our stay at the Gershwin and thought it was value for money. Until we went and stayed on lexington avenue at an amazing modern and trendy hotel for less money. Bottom line: if you can get this hotel at a discounted rate (around 100 a night) then you wont be disappointed! But definitely don't pay top dollar for it, as there are other hotels which have a fair few more luxuries for less!

My husband and I stayed at the Gershwin hotel for 3 nights in July 2013 and found our stay very pleasant.
Location: very good central manhattan location, 20 minute walk to Times Square and several nice places to eat breakfast (Guy and Gallard) and Dinner (Mollys-an Irish bar with sawdust on the floor and Bella Napoli) nearby. Several subway stops were in close proximity to the hotel and a great 24 hour cafe/deli- Cafe 28 was around the corner. Hotel was always easy to find as it is next door to the Sex Museum which is marked on every map which was a bonus.

Hotel facilities: The hotel is easy to spot from the outside due to the artwork on the front, the inside continued the theme with unique decorating/artwork on each floor! Check in was swift and staff polite and helpful and the hotel and our room were very clean. Spacious lobby (which had a kinda done up warehouse feel to it) with comfy sofas, cold water dispenser, tourist info and a computer station with printer. Birch cafe off lobby, looked nice but didn't try it. Vending machines selling snacks on a couple of floors. We were able to store our luggage upon check out till our flight which was useful.

Room facilities: We had a king room with ensuite on the 10th floor at the back of the hotel, no view as facing flats opposite but didn't mind as better than facing the busy street. Large comfy bed and pillows, couple of chairs and a table in the bay window and wall cupboard (with electronic safe) and chest of drawers for clothes. Furniture was a bit old and worn looking, but did the job. Bathroom was small with no bath, but shower had good pressure and hot water and worked fine. Complimentary toiletries were provided and towels changed daily if required. Wifi was free, available throughout the hotel and was secure with a password provided upon checkin. The hotel was quiet at night which was good for sleeping after a long day exploring, but the aircon was a little old and noisy, but no problem for my earplugs!

Value for money: The cost of our stay was reasonable, a little expensive for the facilities alone, but you couldn't get a better location for the price.

Cons: Only one minor one-the hotel was a little shabby and worn, but was being renovated when we stayed so hopefully it will get a more fresh modern look!!

Overall we enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay at The Gershwin again if in New York!

The Gershwin hotel has a great location. It is close to so many attractions that you can go by foot. The subway is close so you can go to any place from there.
Their staff is really nice and I had delivered a package to the hotel, they let me know when it arrived. The rooms are a bit small but great according to the price. The designs in each floor are really nice.
