“Ridiculously small rooms but great staff.”
Reviewed February 9, 2014 via mobile

If you are just sleeping and it is short stay, this place is o.k, if you plan to spend time in the room relaxing forget it! The bathroom was almost the same size as the bedroom, so it was o.k. The staff were very helpful especially in the bar down stairs( which I do not think is under the management of the hotel) this little bar is one of the best in NYC ! It made our trip fantastic. The location is also great.

I stayed here for almost 4 nights, truly it was a nightmare of an experience. Rooms are tiny, the A/C system never works, as well as the heating system. There is no space for suitcases. Yes, the good thing about the hotel was it's location. However, the room was not as I expected it to be. For a boutique hotel, they should actually make it feel like one (according to their website).

I do not recommend that you stay in this hotel. On our second day there, our room was burglarized, everything of ours in the room stolen. The management initially said they were responsible and would reimburse our loss. We replaced our stolen items in good faith that they would honor their words. After submitting our reimbursement receipts, they abruptly and with no explanation said they were not responsible and were not reimbursing us for our loss.

There was no negligence on our part whatsoever. We entrusted the safety of our things with the Mayfair staff, only to have every item except our toothbrushes stolen from the locked room:

-- We left our door locked. We checked it twice.
-- When we returned, the door was still locked.
-- There was no sign of forced entry. The police report supports this.
-- The room was opened by Mayfair staff to clean the room. This was the ONLY time on record that someone entered the room during the time that all of our things were stolen. When we returned the room was clean, the door was locked, and all of our property was missing. We were told that only our keys and the staff passkeys could open the door.

The hotel was clearly negligent, and responsible for our loss. The management did absolutely nothing after the burglary to make us feel comfortable or safe in the hotel. They didn’t even offer us a discount on our bill.

Aside from behaving reprehensibly——the manager didn’t even speak to us except as we checked out, making us wait for an hour, and then the empty promise to reimburse us——the hotel itself is a miserable and dangerous place to visit: the rug on the stairs is frayed and someone will most likely trip and hurt themselves, a week earlier people were trapped in the elevator, the rooms look onto a dark alley and onto windows piled with inches of pigeon droppings, no sunlight at all, the rooms are small and they stink. It’s a wretched place, appropriately situated in the heart of the theater district, a stage set for the worst hotel of one’s nightmares.

Room Tip: There are no good hotels in this room, and if someone breaks in and steals all of your things, the m...

I stayed here for two nights. The room is small, but it was clean. The shower worked well, as did the air conditioning. Also, the location is fantastic. If you're like me and plan on spending most of your time exploring the city, this is more than adequate.

I was on the fence about this hotel after reading reviews complaining about faulty heating & air conditioning. Turn out the Mayfair wasn't that bad at all. Even though my room was small it was just fine for me. It was clean & comfortable & the air conditioner worked great. You can't beat the location (all the shows & anything you might want to eat is within short walking). Lodging in New York is $$$$$$ even for 2 & 3 star hotels. I was able to lock my room down for $160 per night which ain't bad at all for Times Square. Would definitely stay here again.

Great Location. We had a room overlooking 49th St. It was NOISY and COLD - frigid air streams in the window and air conditioner. No heat control. No sleep.
Hotel is opposite a food kitchen - they load and unload all night. The streets are vacuumed at 3am and trash pickup is at 5am.
After 2 nights we were moved to a room at the back of the hotel - way better, should have been there from the start. Internet did not work for most of the time we were there and when it did it was soo slow! Minimal TV channels available. Great restaurant in the basement made up (almost) for the discomfort in the room.

Room Tip: Keep away from rooms overlooking the street. You have been warned!

I knew this hotel was old and very dated from a previous stay. The cleanliness and the location outweighed the condition since we were there to sleep and bathe only. However, this time, the door would not lock, and eventually the entire door knob unit just fell out and was hanging by some wires. The desk clerk said they would move us within 30 min. Had the kind housekeeping workers not helped and pursued the front desk, I guess we probably would have remained in a room where the door would not lock during our entire stay instead of overnight. The heat was unbearable and was controlled by the desk. The loud window air conditioner had to run constantly for us to be able to stand being inside during the short time we were there. We finally got moved to another room. The tv didn't work at all in our new room, and I asked the front desk to allow us to have a late check out on the day we left, to compensate for everything that had gone wrong. He said he would if we paid and used the hotel car service to take us to the airport when we left...I almost laughed out loud!! He would arrange for us to have transportation to meet a flight, when he wouldn't even help us lock our door for a 24 hr period??? This young man lied to us and was never sympathetic to
our needs. I was appalled at his attitude and smugness every time we had to complain...Remember, I had stayed there before and chose to stay at the Mayfair again...previously knowing how small the rooms were and that the hotel had not been maintained...Never again.
