“Not Sure What The Moaning Is About!”
Reviewed December 8, 2011

We travelled to NYC for 5 days at the beginning of December, staying in the Wellington Hotel. Upon first arrival I was amazed at the place being so big, reviews made this hotel sound dark, dingy and small, this however is not the case at all. The rooms were very adequate for the price that we spent on them and they were always thoroughly cleaned every day. The best part of the Hotel is definately the location. You can very easily see on a map where a Hotel is but until you are actually staying here you can't appreciate how good the location is. Minutes walk to Central Park and minutes walk in the opposite direction to Times Square, Rockefeller is within walking distance along with Grand Central, Radio City. You are able to step out the side entrance of the hotel and almost fall down to the subway with N, Q, or R train taking you straight to 34th with Macy's, Empire State etc etc. Ideally I would look at eating at one of the thousands of restaurants that are dotted around New York and you are never too far from one rather than eating at the adjoining diner.

Staff were very friendly in advising places to go, always willing to go that extra mile without being tipped at all and the porters were always willing to help. Price, location, quality, convenience all cannot be faulted. A+ in my opinion however you are always going to get snobs who expect a gymnasium, pool, sauna etc etc with slippers left at the side of the bed every night but with the place you get what you pay for and it's great value for money.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing 7th Avenue so you can watch all the going on at night time.

This is an ideal hotel for a first visit to this amazing city. Reasonable rates, courteous service, nice bar, great breakfasts in the adjoining diner. And if you're there on Thanksgiving (as we were) you're right on the parade route. It's ideally placed for exploring Manhattan - and conveniently placed just a couple of blocks down from the southern end of Central Park and one block from Carnegie Hall. And it's just far enough away from the ghastliness of Times Square. There's a subway stop right by the side door, so it's easy to get uptown to Harlem, downtown to the Village and all points beyond. Best for brits there's a cheap, slightly rundown deli over the road that does tea - with PG Tips tea bags!! Great for that pre-breakfast fix. And you make it yourself so you can put the teabag in BEFORE the water!!!!!!!!!! Shame WiFi isn't free, but then this is not a business hotel but a tourist one.

Room Tip: Take a room on the inside .. absolutely no street noise

We had a two double bedroom on the 21st floor, very clean and tidy. The paint work in the one bathroom was the only thing i could say i found wrong, as it was a bit chiped. service was great, they even let us in our room early. The location is very good, you can walk to times square in just over 5 mim. All in all i can say its very good for the price and we all would go back there again!!

It was terrible! Dirty sheets, dirty carpet. I booked my hotel at priceline, big mistake. I paid almost 700 hundred dlls for this...... Honestly I am a very patient person, take little to please me but this was really bad. I do not recommeded it.

Having read other reviews before booking, we were not expecting a great deal, aside from the good location. We took the advice of other travellers, and asked for a room on a high floor. They gave us a room on the top floor, looking out over the park. The corridor was in need of painting, and the carpet outside are room was heavily stained; but once inside our room we were pleasantly surprised. The bed was quite small, but the mattress was new and very comfortable, everything was clean, and we had a very large flat screen tv. The bathroom was very 1980s, but, that also was very clean. The staff were friendly and we would certainly return. We would definately recommend to tourists wanting a cheap option in New York, however, previous reviewers are right- the hotel is rather noisy the lower down you go, so ask for high floors!

Room Tip: We stayed on the 27th floor. Fantastic view of the park.

We went to this hotel because my methodic father in law insisted we should stay there, sibce he had been staying there everytime he went to NYC in the past 35 years. Well, 35 years seems to be the last time the hotel (especially bathrooms and elevators) saw any renovation, indeed. Service at the reception was horrible and we had to switch rooms aftet we had already checked in - which took more than one hour. Also, we found out 3 days later that they had inappropriately charged extra 400 dollars in my brother in law's credit card. But the pièce de la resistance was when, in our bedroom, while trying to find a power outlet to charge our cell phones (there was none visibly available), we moved the bed and found an empty pack of condom "forgotten" behind ou bed, for God knows how long. The elevators are not in sufficient number nor intelligently programmed, so they take about 5 minutes to get to our floor. Anyway, the only thing good about this hotel is the location.

Pro: great location, clean, not pricey for NYC; comfortable bed; good sized room.
Con: Deteriorated rooms in serious need of renovation: banging radiators woke us up several times each night; shower water temperature control fluctuated wildly from scorching to frigid; dingy room; temperature controls in room did not work so room far too hot - had to leave window open so noisy.
