I was pleasantly surprised by the NYLO hotel on the upper west side. It's hard to find a good place to stay on the UWS, and midtown hotels are very expensive. We stayed for $215/night on a Sunday night in June. Hotel was clean, modern, attractively decorated, and surprisingly quiet (despite the fire station across the street). Bathroom was a little sparse but very clean. My only complaint is that I am not that tall (5 foot 8) and the shower head was mounted too low (it was actually one of those detachable shower heads but the highest it could go was too short for me. The wifi was also weak.

Celebrating a family milestone in Manhattan, our hosts had selected the NYLO based on the "location, location, location" principle. I'd advise those who are blocking rooms to consider some other things...service, other events booked for the same time period (ask for event exclusivity!) room size/amenities (over ask in your contract) and did I mention service? Confirmed two room reservation by phone, asked that the rooms not be adjoining and if an upgrade was available for one of the rooms, I'd take it. Of course, we had adjoining rooms and I could hear my friend snoring through the thin walls (although I guess it would have been rude if another guest had heard her.) And speaking of rude, the front desk staff made short work of any questions with short, answers, usually starting with "no." No, they did not have a house car to take anyone short distance, no, we can't get you a cab because 6:00 is the shift change (actually, it's between 4-5) no, you can't get an upgrade because we have a wedding here this weekend and they all checked in first. Elevators are slow and small and one of them serves as the service elevator, so if someone is having bags brought up, you can't even squeeze in. Parts of the wooden frame of the bed were peeling off and we didn't want to store our luggage under the bed because it had not been dusted in some time.
When there was no hot water when we checked out on Sunday morning, the front desk clerk told the British guest ahead of us that because she booked on Orbitz, they couldn't do anything in terms of crediting her bill for the inconvenience. And the engineer told us to let the water run for about 20 minutes and we should get some hot water. What a farce! I would have walked or taken the subway and stayed a few blocks down. Location, even times 3, was not worth the pain of staying in a room (to quote another old adage) where you had to leave the room to change your mind.

Great hotel. Took a late flight, so I arrived at the hotel, around 1:00 am, easy check in. Front desk even helped me in finding a restaurant that was open and near by. Location is great, close to restaurants, CVS, shipping, and very close to subway station. Always felt safe at this location, even early hours in the morning. Great staff, and very helpful. Rooms comfortable for 2 people. I was on the six floors and slept great all nights, did not hear any noise. Great price and great location, I am definitely staying here again.

The hotel is nicely located on the upper west side of NYC. Very convenient for activities at Barnard College or Columbia University. But easy to get anywhere by subway. Although the standard room can be a bit cozy, the superior room is spacious and the bathrooms a nice size. Very modern, clean decor. The staff is exceptional in their service. And very friendly. The redesign and re-branding have really made a difference. The lobby has a nice vibe.

Slept like an angel, awoke ready to hit the city, UWS at your fingertips, subway two blocks away, convenient to Broadway show, to good food shopping, the AMNH and Central Park. While I miss the NYC of the 1970's and the traffic is out of control, this neighborhood hotel sure beats Times Square or the east 40's with charm and a little of what NYC should be.

We just returned from a 5 night stay. The hotel was perfect for us. The lobbey, lounge, reception and bar have a great relaxed feel and look. The bar staff are exceptional, friendly and make fabulous cocktails. The rooms clean and comfy beds. Greta location also, close to Central Park and nearby subway, bars, restaurants and coffee shops. We will be visiting again.
