“Caring Staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

Our family recently made our first trip to NYC for what was suppose to be an extended weekend in the Big Apple...we were 12 hours from home and our little girl ended up horribly ill and in the hospital. The staff at NYLO treated our family with the utmost care and concern. I cannot say enough about the wonderful treatment we received. The hotel is in a fabulous location and very family friendly. I will recommend this hotel to all my friends and family as well as hold it dear to my heart due to care we personally received.

We stayed her for 4 nights on our honeymoon, over Thanksgiving.

What a great find! We got an excellent rate. Our room was average in size for NYC, but very clean and well designed with a VERY comfortable bed. The main plus point for us was the newly refurbished bar and lobby. Charles, the bartender was amazing, so welcoming, friendly and attentive, he was our friend by the end of our stay and was so generous – he left us a wedding gift! Charles definitely made our stay extra special.

The location is great too, in a fun neighbourhood with some excellent bars and restaurants.

We chose NYLO for our recent Thanksgiving week stay due to previous OTA stays and the
proximity to our intended viewing area for the Macy's parade, as well as its great location for
access to midtown. We were favorably impressed with the lobby area upgrade, addition of a
bar and lounge, and overall decor. We did not see much change in room layout or amenities,
but we were quite satisfied with our room. The amenities are what you would expect- safe, iron,
etc. You won't find robes, slippers and the like but we did not expect them. Great shower and
hot water, and to my wife's priorities, our room was clean.
The staff was very helpful, prior to our arrival as we sorted through our parade viewing plan
and during our stay. All were polite, helpful and professional. We did not find the elevator
waits ( as some have felt excessive ) to be unrealistic. Having an interior access to Serafina
Restaurant is a plus. We dined there our last lunch and found it to be quite good.
With many boutique hotels in Manhattan, why NYLO? For us, the upper West side is an area
which offers great dining opportunities, close proximity to Central Park, quick access by
subway to most areas of interest, and a safe walking neighborhood for just enjoying the
unique appeal of mingling with a cross section of tourists and NYC natives while strolling down
Broadway/Amsterdam/Columbus Ave., or Central Park West.

This was our third stay at NYLO, previously known as OTA and before then as On The Ave.
I spent most of my teens living with my father on W. 84th, so UWS familiar turf, a lovely place to come back to and a very convenient location for all NYC has to offer.
The hotel has been rebranded, and redecorated in an urban neo industrial chic style, for lack of a better term. I found some design items a bit weird, such as the colored metal doors on basic Ikea style furniture, the raw concrete floors and exposed bricks in the lobby, and the very strange highlight/accent brick wallpaper in a part of the room, but that only reflects my tastes, and overall, the decor worked quite nicely.
We stayed in a penthouse loft, a rather large and pleasant room, with a very nice balcony and a wonderful view of the Hudson. We expected this, as we'd stayed in the equivalent room one floor above last year.
The beds are incredibly comfortable, without question the most comfortable hotel ones I've ever slept on. And in what I found an absolutely delightful touch, there is no minibar in the room, but we were offered a mini fridge, which we stocked to our taste with all the goodies the local stores had to offer. Very classy!
We didn't spend much time in the lobby, but it seemed to be hopping at all times, always a good sign.
Staff was excellent, with a special mention to Scot for his help with reservations, and to Jessie for her efficient front desk work and her smile.
On the down side, the elevators are an absolute nightmare, especially when staying on the upper floors. They are working on this, but until renovation is completed, you can read the entire Sunday paper while waiting.
I also found it bizarre that the great coffee brewed in the high end coffee maker in our room had to be served in paper cups, and that the glasses were all plastic. Perhaps I've lived in Europe for too long, but I didn't find that classy at all.
And finally, we did arrive early-mid-morning-but our room was not available until mid afternoon. A bit frustrating as we had booked a ten day stay.
Overall however, a really fabulous hotel, and we look forward to returning next year!

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms have balconies.

We loved the design of the lobby and guest rooms. Though the room was small, it was very comfortable and well appointed in every way! The staff, from the front desk to the bar to the cleaning crew were all incredibly nice and welcoming. We will most definitely stay at NYLO NYC again when visiting New York!

We were looking forward to our third visit to the NYLO (or its previous incarnation, On the Avenue), particularly after a wonderful weekend there last July, when we checked in on Thanksgiving weekend. The room we ended up in, 925 on the 9th floor overlooking Broadway, was bright and cheery with a very comfortable king bed, lots of storage and ultra-modern decor. But it wasn't the room we were originally assigned. Our first room, 606, was described by the receptionist as "a nice quiet room" which turned out to mean a room with no natural light (there is a blank brick wall maybe 10 feet outside the window and no direct view of the sky) and the feeling of a prison cell (storage lockers for furniture feels hip when the room is full of light, but not when the only light comes from within the room). When we complained, we were offered a choice of several other rooms with street views, which makes one wonder: why weren't we offered one of those rooms in the first instance? The other problem was that we had practically no water pressure in the shower on the second day of our visit. I don't mean inadequate pressure, which we had the first day, but is a problem in most New York hotels, I mean practically no pressure. When I held the shower head (which is on a hose) upside down, the spray rose less than one inch before trickling down. The only way to get wet enough to wash, or to rinse off, was to rub oneself with the shower head, which is neither satisfactory nor sanitary. The bathroom also has no towel bars, which makes reusing any of the towels difficult as there is no place to hang the towels to dry. The location is great, the staff is friendly, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the price is okay for New York, so we may give the NYLO another chance, but I might check out one of its Upper West Side competitors, like the Belleclaire or the Lucerne, first.
