We stayed at the Lucerne Hotel in December 2006, just before Chrstmas, for a couple of days, and found this to be a very pleasant place, for my wife and myself and also our two children (12 and 15 years oldI).

The room was not very large, but the size was perfectly ok, since we went sightseeing throughout the days. Our children could stay with us, in the same room.

Positive:

The two beds were very comfatable and absolutely clearn, the bathroom was also very clean and ok.

The location is absolutely perfect, if you want to discover New York.

The breakfast at the Nice Matin restaurant which is located in the ground floor (but I understand that this is a separate company) was truly excellent (not included in the hotel price) - there is a large choice. We also had dinner once at the Nice Matin - really very good (Mediterranen food), but rather a bit expensive (the price seemed nevertheless justified). The only drawback in the evening (not in the morning) at the Nice Matin was the high level of noise.....

The service of the hotel was efficient and friendly.

Negative:

In our view there is not really any negative aspect, Just an issue of taste: the room we had was not very "modern" in layout and style.,...

Overall: Definitely worth a recomendation, definitely a decent balace between quality and price.

Stayed: December 2006

I would not hesitate to stay at this property again and as a travel agent will be recommending this property to all my clients. The staff were very good, friendly and efficient. The room was beautiful, I was fortunate to have one of the newly refurbished ones, if a little noisy - definitely request an inside room next time! There is a subway stop one block away which will take you straight to Times Square while Central Park and the Museum of Natural History are a short walk away.

I would also thoroughly recommend the Shining Star restaurant which is a block away - delicious food with friendly but not overbearing service!

My husband and I just returned from 3 nights at the Lucerne and overall it was comfortable, clean and sufficed perfectly for our needs. It's not a sleek hotel with uber-modern interior decor and design but it is classy and has character. I would describe our room/suite as having a sort of shabby elegance to it. Definitely had an old, somewhat worn feeling to it, but this translated into a sort of coziness and hominess that we found welcoming in the dead of winter in NY. The bathroom and bedroom were perfectly clean, the shower was plenty strong, and the bed was amazingly comfy, though the pillows were on the lumpy side. Service was stellar. I had emailed earlier to ask for a room with more space (as we had a lot of luggage with us) and we found ourselves upgraded to a suite which was a nice surprise. Noise was not really an issue for us though there were the typical NY "night sounds" at odd hours of the night that filtered through our 8th floor windows - sirens, etc. No biggie for us at all.

Overall, NYC is just an amazing city and the Lucerne is a safe, decent, comfy and cozy place to stay, with excellent service to boot. Feels more like staying in a nice home (albeit slightly worn but in a comfy way) than a chic hotel.

I read the reviews of this hotel before I booked it. We are a family of four and booked a double room between Christmas and New Years. We found that the many positive reviews were accurate. Our room was pleasant and clean. All staff were very pleasant. The location was quiet for N.Y. and close to public transportation. There were lots of dining options close by. The Nice Matin restaurant in the hotel was great. We would surely stay here again.

We had been waiting for this trip for 2 years - went for a 40th birthday celebration for my sister in law. The plan for to do some Christmas shopping, walk, drink coffee, wine and sink into the atmosphere!! It was the first time for all of us in NYC!! Arrived at hotel and booked in straight away. Initial thought on room is that it was small and it had no view to speak of, but after a chat with the lovely people on reception, they moved us to a bigger room overlooking Amsterdam. Rooms were very comfortable and warm and we did not experience much noise - we were on the 7th floor. Nice Martin was very nice, had breakfast and early evening glass of wine there although there are loads of places locally to eat. Hotel really close to Central Park and Natural History Museum. Subway 1 block away which was brilliant. We had a fantastic time and the hotel staff were brilliant and very helpful with advice as this was our first time (but definately not our last) to NYC. We would stay there again, it is just far enough away on the upper west side from the really busy central part of Manhatten, has loads of character and we want to go back! Enjoy!

This is our third visit and all in all it was fabulous again. On previous occasions we had a junior suite, very quiet. These were not available now as they are being converted into executive king suites. The room that was given to us now was a luxury king on the highest room floor. In these non-suite rooms your bed is directly next to the entry door, and this door is not well isolated and has cracks. As a result, disturbing light comes in from the corridor, plus the noise. There's also street noise, due to the fact that the sliding windows don't close well. But after the first night I got used to it and had a decent sleep. Big thumbs up for the personnel that does everything to help you and make you feel at ease.
This time we skipped the adjoining Nice Matin restaurant, but had our breakfasts at New Wave, nearby on Broadway. It's a small wonderful neighbourhood diner with very friendly waittresses. All the times we were there they played old Stevie Wonder songs and it all just fitted right. In the area there are many good local restaurants, it's always difficult to make a pick and you wish you could eat 7 times a day.
Can't wait to be back.

This is really a great hotel - clean, efficient, comfortable. Great location too, 3 blocks from Central Park & a really nice residential area with lots of restaurants & bars around (EJ's luncheonette around the corner does great breakfasts, shakes, burgers etc!)
This is ideal if you want to escape the mad, busy tourist areas of NYC & recharge your batteries in the evening, but a Subway station is just at the end of the block to reach places really easily.
Great stay & will definately stay there again.
