“Gem on Upper West Side”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2012

Stayed while on a theatre trip December 18 - 21. Wanted to get away from the Times Square mobs. Found this hotel and I sure am glad. The location is fantastic. 79th and Amsterdam. 1 block to the 1 train that will take you to theatre district or connections to anywhere else. Soooooo many restaurants and bars along Amesterdam Ave, Columbus Ave or Broadway.

The hotel is quite luxurious. Beautiful lobby with marble and granite appointments. Check in was a breeze. Had requested early check and got it. Upgraded to King room ($15 night extra) Everyone was very friendly: from the doorman, to the front desk personnel to the bellman to the maids, anytime I passed they made it a point to greet me.

The room was very well appointed: marble topped dressers, crown molding, nice curtains, molding, very chic, very clean. Had only plastic cups instead of glasses. Only complaint, which I find in many hotels, is the pillows are too soft. Even when you try to stack two or three, you just sink down in them. But a minor issue.

Elevators are quick; again a minor point but worth mentioning. Also, didn't wake once to any noise. I was in a room that didn't have a view, so it was probably on the back side, but not once during the night did I hear a horn honk (an unusual thing in NYC).

Overall, if you want to get away from the crowds and tourists of Times Square, and explore a new neighborhood with easy access to anywhere else in NYC, consider The Lucerne.

This was my fifth time living in this wonderful hotel. High quality; classy, clean, quiet, wonderful reception, concierge and bellboys. Instead of waking up in the middle of tourist traps, (38th. to 55th streets) you wake up in an area where local people live, eat, drink, walk around. Nearby you have Central Park, wine bars, restaurants, bookstores and all kind of grocery stores. I love this hotel and the neighborhood. Will definitely come back.

This hotel is just fine, and from my (somewhat limited experience) one of the better ones in this area of the West Side (it's at 79th & Amsterdam, within steps of Natural History Museum, Central Park, tons of NYC transportation options). I was in a "quiet room towards the back" with no view - I don't know how the rooms on the "front" are but when I'm in NYC I do enjoy a street view.
It's an older building, with the issues that older buildings (esp in NYC) have including small elevators, small funky closets, steps into the lobby (no ramp - fine if you have small bags or doorman is on it). In fall/winter the air tends to dry out (true pretty much any older NY hotel without integrated climate control). Pillows are decent, medium soft. Sounds of other guests are audible, including any crying babies (not super loud, but quite audible).
The service is pleasant and attentive, although a bit spotty (little things e.g. they deliver NY Times to your door in theory but not always in practice, semi-broken hairdryer in room). All in all I'd stay there again but wouldn't go out of my way to do so.

Room Tip: Personally I prefer a street view so I can feel the fun of being in NY - even for business - even th...

Our recent stay at the Lucerne Hotel was pleasant enough, but for close to $500 per night I expected more in terms of decor and attractiveness. The green, gold and brown upholstery and carpet are drab, if not downright ugly. We had requested (long in advance) a room on an upper floor that was quiet and had a view of some sort. Our room on the seventh floor was quiet and we heard hardly any traffic noise from outside ,which is remarkable considering the location on the corner of 2 busy streets. However, the unappealing "view" was of neighboring brownstone rooftops. At checkout time, we mentioned our disappointment and were told that only rooms above the 7th floor have a view and that it can never be guaranteed. The superior queen suite was comfortable, and it had ample space with a small sitting room, it just wasn't very pretty!
We arrived 2 hours before checkin time of four o'clock. The staff told us that we could not check in early, but they did store our bags cheerfully.
I think that the most winning feature of this hotel is the bustling Nice Matin bistro, accessible from the lobby, where patrons are given a 15% discount. The food is good and I felt like I was in Paris, even hearing French spoken at a nearby table! This is a perfect place for breakfast or lunch.
My husband would like to stay here again, while I would like to explore other nearby hotels to see how their amenities match up.

Room Tip: Floors above the 7th may have a view.

We stay at the Lucerne about four times a year and have done so for the past five years; the one constant is the excellent level of service from every member of the staff. The location on the Upper Westside is perfect, the rooms are immaculate, the adjoining restaurant, the Nice Matin, is wonderful; the neighborhood has numerous small cafes, restaurants, stores; but what makes the Lucerne so special is the caring, friendly staff from the bellmen who greet you when you arrive to the folks at the reservation desk and the housekeepers. They make guests feel welcome and that's an intangible that many NYC hotels still haven't figured out.

This is my second time staying at this hotel. The location on the Upper West Side is excellent. There's plenty to eat and do right there, including a number of playgrounds and Central Park. This is especially important for us since we have young children. The food selection for breakfast is great. You can find plenty to take back to the hotel in the morning, or if you want to go out there's plenty of places to do that to (we really like Sarabeth's West). There's a subway stop a half block away so you can easy get to everything not in walking distance.

The staff at the hotel is great. The kids love all the door men who are very friendly (and make sure the kids don't forgot/drop things in the lobby).

The hotel is nice, clean, and doesn't really have any problems but it doesn't do anything totally awesome either. I'd love to give it a 3.5 circle rating but I cannot select that, and I don't want to give it a 4, so 3 it is.

One thing that really annoyed me this past trip was that the TV was programmed so that it wouldn't let me play a movie from our iPad. I was able to get the iPad connected but the TV wouldn't do anything when pressing the "TV Video" button on the remote.

The Lucerne will stay on my list of hotels to visit when I'm in the city but the TV issue definitely will play a factor the next time I'm looking for a place to stay.

Just returned from a three night stay at The Lucerne. I was not disappointed! I discovered this hotel a few years ago and now consider it my home away from home when I visit New York. It is close to the Subway as well as Central Park and Riverside Drive. In addition to the restaurant attached to the hotel, there are quite a few restaurants nearby. It has a great neighborhood feel.

The hotel staff, especially the Doormen and Housekeeping were so accommodating. I lover my room (a suite with a separate sitting area and small fridg).

I can't wait to go back.
