Stayed while on a theatre trip December 18 - 21. Wanted to get away from the Times Square mobs. Found this hotel and I sure am glad. The location is fantastic. 79th and Amsterdam. 1 block to the 1 train that will take you to theatre district or connections to anywhere else. Soooooo many restaurants and bars along Amesterdam Ave, Columbus Ave or Broadway.
The hotel is quite luxurious. Beautiful lobby with marble and granite appointments. Check in was a breeze. Had requested early check and got it. Upgraded to King room ($15 night extra) Everyone was very friendly: from the doorman, to the front desk personnel to the bellman to the maids, anytime I passed they made it a point to greet me.
The room was very well appointed: marble topped dressers, crown molding, nice curtains, molding, very chic, very clean. Had only plastic cups instead of glasses. Only complaint, which I find in many hotels, is the pillows are too soft. Even when you try to stack two or three, you just sink down in them. But a minor issue.
Elevators are quick; again a minor point but worth mentioning. Also, didn't wake once to any noise. I was in a room that didn't have a view, so it was probably on the back side, but not once during the night did I hear a horn honk (an unusual thing in NYC).
Overall, if you want to get away from the crowds and tourists of Times Square, and explore a new neighborhood with easy access to anywhere else in NYC, consider The Lucerne.
