We had xmas dinner there for our first visit. Location is great for NYC, as it is a little away from the busiest streets. Small and cozy, it was packed with an elegant crowd. Prix fixe menu was good, beautifully presented and tasty. Service was good, but not exceptional. I was a little disappointed with the house wine by the glass, but an extensive wine list was available. The venison course was the best and the foie gras excellent.
Overall a very good experience. Price was stiff, but competitive in the category for that particular day, when all top restaurants jack up their prices. Will go back.

A small restaurant just off the avenue offers fine dining and excellent wines in a quietly elegant atmosphere. We shared the superb fois gras as an appetizer and I had the juicy venison tenderloin as my entrée. The staff are everywhere - quietly taking orders; serving and clearing tables. It has a quiet atmosphere enabling intelligible conversation tableside. Their wine hostess, Heidi Johnson, was knowledgeable and recommended a surprising wine to pair with my meal. An Armenian red called Korasi Areni Noir. It did, in fact, pair perfectly. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal! Note though that the entrees are mostly priced above $40, and the appetizers range around $20. Princely pricing. The wines are generally just under $20/glass. I would return with an expense account footing the bill.

We have dined many times at this standout Upper Westside restaurant since it first opened, and have never been disappointed. So I am happy to be able to report that it is as good as ever from the cornbread and amuse-bouche to dessert. We have mostly visited on Sundays when they have a prix-fixe menu. It used to be a real bargain. At $58 maybe not so much so, but all the food was indeed terrific. Wines, as everywhere it seems, are overpriced, but there is a good choice and they are well presented. Our servers were friendly but there was a bit of confusion at times (such as two desserts presented when we hadn't even chosen yet). The space is quietly peaceful, all the better to appreciate the experience. We are so glad Dovetail continues to thrive without compromise.

The food was absolutely sensational and the service matched perfectly, including full explanations of what each dish was when it was served. Would definitely return.
