“Tired and in need of updating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

Still not cheap, and there are now better-kept places to stay in NYC (Equity Point on Times Sq for example), and fixtures and fittings are getting a bit rickety now. Wi-fi only available in the downstairs area, something to do with the age of the building (although I've stayed in plenty of older places all over the world which have wifi throughout)

Although rooms have A/C, the unit is just placed in the open window with a thin plastic sheeting around the unit, which in winter doesn't keep any cold air out and makes it very noisy year-round on the street side.

Housekeeping was fine: clean towels, soap and shampoo every day and your bed is made up, there is cable TV and a safe in each room too.

Leisure facilities are excellent but then if you're a tourist in NYC, you're not going to spend a lot of time in the accommodation or the gym, you get a better workout just walking around the city! It's just a few blocks to Columbus Circle for the subway and a few steps to Central Park too, so good location

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for one of the (4 or 5) rooms with private shower and toilet.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to review the facilities at the West Side YMCA, your feedback is very helpful in letting us know how we can improve the experiences future and returning guests have while staying with us.

We recently began renovations on multiple guest room floors, and are looking forward to quickly seeing results of someone the renovation. We are continuously working to make improvements to the facilities - we recently finished our new guest lounge that now offers WiFi, TV, and live entertainment.

Our WiFi network is new as well, and we are working on expanding the reach of service so that it will be accessible on all floors.

Thank you again for reviewing the West Side Y. I hope you enjoyed your stay in New York City, and if you have any further questions or comments please feel free to reach out to me at GRochford@ymcanyc.org.

Best,

Grace

I had booked the West Side YMCA for one week (a single room with shared bathroom for more than 90 GBP per night), based on earlier stays there. When I arrived I realized that the place has deteriorated a lot since a year ago: the room (on an "unrenovated" floor) was tiny and spare, with spots on the floor and walls; the TV was old and produced graint images; the ceiling light (the only one in the room) went off every few minutes (on a timer to save energy I guess); the radiators made a very loud noise. After the first sleepless night a group of Danish teenagers arrived who turned the entire floor into a chaotic playground: they shouted and slammed doors throughout the night and made the entire bathroom (in which only one tap worked) a garbage bin with paper towels and clothes thrown onto the floor and into the sinks. When I complained at the reception and asked for another room they were very rude and said that all rooms were taken and that I paid a budget rate (for more than 90 GBP without breakfast for a room of such low standards I certainly overpaid at least thrice)! The cafeteria on the ground floor has also changed: no more fresh products and cooked breakfasts but only pre-packaged overpriced items - payment by credit card at automatic cashiers only (even for a copy you have to use a credit card; kids without credit cards cannot get anything). I was only glad when my stay had come to an end and I could move out. Beware of this place!

been there many times ( like 3 or 4 ), cause it's one of the cheapest opportunity in NYC.

yeah, the rooms are very basic and tiny. in my opinion there wasn't nothing to complain about cleanliness.

you can't beat the location near columbus circle, times square and central park, If you also like to meet cool people from all over the world this is the place to be!

I recommed this hostel you younger people.

NY friends said this was actually and "upscale" Y and was suppose to be very nice and super inexpensive by New York City standards.....NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I paid $95 a night rate, available only if booking online. This was higher than the lower rate of $75 a night because it supposedly came with a semi-private bath. One would think that mean perhaps two adjacent rooms sharing a bath. NO. It means a bathroom down the hall where you can lock the door, as opposed to a communal bathroom with no lock I guess.

The very, very tiny room had furniture from three decades ago, and it wasn't "retro chic."

There isn't a real mattress, only a box spring pseudo mattress.

The twin bed won't fit anyone over 6' comfortably.

The carpet looked to be so old it probably would need scrapping to get off the floor.

Having said all of that, I was amazed at the wide range of people staying there; from young 20 something hotties to established older professionals, and those in an apparent impoverished state.

I did not stay another night and found a high end hotel with a special rate per night over the weekend equivalent to the Y rate I had paid.

Won't try the Y again no matter what people say.

Over the years I've done a lot of travelling and staying in a real variety of accommodation. I see a lot of people say this hostel isn't great, friendly or clean. In my opinion you really do get what you pay for, I stayed over Xmas and new yr so prices were hugely inflated so I can't comment on whether prices are usually reasonable in comparison In terms of actual stay it was everything you would expect from a hostel. Personally I felt it was clean and friendly. I would recommend staying here. If you can stretch budget I would suggest paying for private PART shared bathroom. It makes a huge difference and is convenient. Personally I wouldn't stay on the open bathroom levels unless I was a traveller for a long period of time.

I found the hostel staff to be warm, welcoming and friendly. They were all New Yorkers which made it feel very homely.

Those that want a gym, you have use of the full YMCA gym which is huge!! Almost makes it worth it on itself.

Do stay here, it's fine.

My sister and i stayed here for a week over New Years. THE GOOD - the location is amazing, right outside central park and close to a whole foods for cheap eats. Only a short work to Times Square, The MET and The Museum of Natural Sciences. The rooms also have tv's. THE BAD - the bathrooms are a bit to be desired for and everything is quite old but then again it is fairly priced and is only a place to sleep.

Ok, if you want to visit New york city without having to walk miles to reach any points of interest without spending too much money, this is the best place you can go.
The prices are definately lower than every hotels around, but you have what you pay for.
The staff is not particularly pleasant honestly.
Hygiene was not an high priority. Even if I saw the janitor entering the bathroom (which are shared with everybody on that floor) every morning, the floor, the shower and the sink were not so clean.
If you are obsessed with hygiene, you will have an hard time staying there for a while, this place might not be for you.
Also, I felt pretty secure during my trip (for those who are wondering about security)
Finally, and now i am talking to young adults who travels with friends, you may like this place because at every hour of the day there are people of that age relaxing, browsing and socialising in the hall, so if it is your type of person you may like the mood of this hotel.
I hope this helped.
