“Great location with a few quirks...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

This is my second review of the West YMCA...this time I stayed with a friend in one of the "renovated" double rooms on the 13th floor.

Pros: Fantastic location. Very safe. Rooms were clean, beds comfortable. Cheap for NYC. Renovated rooms have carpet, desk, chair and a flat screen TV. They were a decent size. Staff was very friendly.

Cons: Bathrooms did not seem to be cleaned on a regular basis. Cafe that used to be in the lobby is gone. No blankets on the bed...I managed to snag a couple from the linen cart. People come and go at all hours, but this IS a hostel and that is to be expected.

Quirks: There was no ladder to get to the top bunk, and the bunks were fairly high! When we asked for a ladder, we were told that they couldn't get one so late and that people usually just "jumped" up! There really was no way to get up there...unless you were some kind of gymnast! The next day, we were given a ladder, but it had no hooks at the top, so when my friend tried to use it to climb down, it slid right across the floor and she was left hanging on the to side of the bed. It was extremely awkward and very odd...I have stayed in MANY hostels with bunk beds and even the worst of them had a ladder or way to climb up to the top bunk! The beds could easily have easily have been separated into two twins beds and the room was large enough to do this...I wonder why they don't go this route, rather than have people "jumping" or using a defective ladder. Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Room Tip: We had a nice view from the 13th floor...get a room on the outside of the building. And ask for a la...

Had a private room for $92/night--reasonable by NYC standards. Room was comfortable, linens changed every day, air conditioning, and was quiet except that I could hear doors banging shut down the hall. Bathrooms were down the hall, but they were all individual and private. Practically across the street from Lincoln Center and Central Park. Within walking distance of Times Square, etc, but also handy to subways. Also receive access to the Y's fitness center and pool. Room security was good. Would have preferred men to be on separate floors.

Room Tip: The rooms on the upper floors are better because the bathrooms are private

We were staying at YMCA west side in august for one week with my boyfriend. This was our 4 time in new york. Location was AWESOME, we walked almost everywhere! Metro station was near, starbucks was near, Duane reader was near..! Room was clean. We booked a bunk-bed, but luckily we got two beds. Every day we get fresh towels and I'm not sure if the sheets were also changed every day. There were quite a lot teenagers that time, but luckily we didn't hear them making noice. Air condition was good and it wasn't too hot to sleep (what i was afraid of because august is VERY hot in NY). And BIG PLUS was the GYM!! And it was FREE!! We've been in Philly and DC also, in a 5 star hotel were was also gym, but i don't know how they could even call it a gym :D. But this YMCA gym was very good!! I recommend to go there if you stay this hostel.

But every place has also minus side.. eventho the room was clean, I have to say that shared bathrooms here not so cool.. I have been in shared bathrooms every time in NY, but this was first time when i saw a cockroach.. and some other bugs.. in a bathroom. I hate all kind of bugs and i was in shower when i saw one big cockroach under a warmer.. then i saw about 5 small black bugs in the wall. It was quite disgusting, but I have so say that i get to used to them.. they didn't move, they were just hanging in their own places.. lol!

So if you want just a good place to stay and great location (and maybe do little work out;) i really recommend this place!! :)

We stayed here for a night on a quick trip to New York around Christmas. We were looking for a reasonable, clean place to put our bags and our heads for the few hours we weren't out sight seeing and it was perfect. The rooms are very small and basic and bathrooms are communal, split between female and male on each floor. It wouldn't be a place to stay for a luxury weekend, and the front desk staff were a bit hit and miss in the smiling department, but it is in a great location, right on Central Park, exactly the thing if you plan to spend most of your time out and about looking at the sights.

My Sis and I stayed here as it was Probally one of the cheapest places, also the location right by park was amazing! Its also only a fun through the shops 20 min walk to times sq! although it was a bit cheaper the room still cost us 100 dollars a night for a tiny room with a bunk bed in and a tv (no bathroom). I think we were confused booking this as I thought the YMCA was a hostel but it's not, there's no kitchen, common room or laundry facilitys so for a back packer it's extra expensive eating out 3x day. The rooms are above a community centre and you share the lifts with people going to the gym and kids going to the pool! Very strange! We did get use of the pool but didn't use it as it was always full of school kids. Our room was quiet but boiling hot, the air con was too noisy to stay on over night! The beds were made each day but we noticed some things we bought had been moved or turned around like they had been looked at! The toilets were horrible and the showers were weird pods where there was no where to change after and your clothes were wet as no where to hang them! So in all I would not stay here again, I'd pay more and go to a hotel.

I have given the West Side YMCA the overall rating based on my two main criteria used when looking for a place to stay in NYC: price and location.

The hostel is far cheaper then any local hotels. Locationwise, it was right by Central Park (could just see it from my room) and only a couple of blocks from Columbus Circle and the subway.

Of course it's a hostel so the rooms are basic. My single room was far from luxurious, but was clean and had a basic telly and a towel provided. The bathrooms are shared, but are private rather than communal. A bit more attention could've been given here to cleanliness, but it wasn't particularly gross! Great showers too!

All in all this is a safe and affordable place to stay in a very expensive city, particularly for a solo traveller.

Room Tip: Not a room tip, but the towels are small - so consider bringing your own if luggage allowance permit...
