“Worth it-once(or twice) in a life time!”

Outstanding from the great check in staff to the staff in the hallways. This hotel that was once owned by George Bolt of Bolt Castle fame on the St. Lawrence River(now mostly restored) lives up to it's previous reputation for greatness. The rooms bring you back to a time of pure elegance and fine service. From gold fixtures to wonderful bedding this is a must. The rates very widely so look deep into the travel websites for a bargain. You will need to save money somewhere to afford a cocktail at the Bull and Bear Bar-$17.50 per. we stayed here, but, now retired, ate off site. Cheap or frugal?

What an amazing honeymoon, being in New York was fantastic staying at the Waldorf Astoria, Park Avenue was everything we expected from a 1930's iconic building as beautiful inside as outside. From the moment we walked into the foyer through the grand marbled corridor to the reception area we felt back in the era of Ginger Rogers, Lana Turner and Walter Pigeon. The service was wonderful, complementary chocolate strawberries and champagne and letters, we felt decadent and like film stars. The room was lovely on a corner on the 24th floor. The views were spectacular. The room was comfortable and big and the bed and bedding was so comfortable. We spent very happy evenings in the cocktail bar. It was the best honeymoon in the world and we loved it so much we're going back in August!

Excellent old hotel with a "character", not comparable to the most other hotels in this price range: simply a "must have stayed"! Centrally located in midtown. Smooth check-in and -out. I stayed in the "Astoria level" (26th floor) in a clean and very spacious room; breakfast (on the same floor) was included in my price. Fantastic furniture in all rooms! WLAN was free - but only in the (very comfortable) lobby. I could not receive phone calls from outside directly (only via operator), which was not a problem in my case. Staff was friendly and efficient. On a business trip, I would recommend anyone to add one day extra just to enjoy this hotel, and New York, of course. But I would not refuse to stay for weeks, either...

We were excited to stay at the historical Waldorf Astoria, to look at the pictures and marvel at the beautiful decor in the lobby - and it was very interesting to see and read about the history... but the charm ended there. Our room was small and in need of being renovated, the drinks/ food were very overpriced, as expected, and the service for what I would expect from a world-class hotel, was very mediocre. No one was rude, but I expected better service and more attention and have gotten better service from many other hotels. I'm happy we stayed there, but next time I think we'll shoot for staying somewhere in Times Square closer to the action for the same price. For first-time tourists, I recommend walking to Times Square - it's a straight shot down 49th and only about 10 blocks and you pass Rockefeller Plaza, Radio City Music Hall and 5th Avenue all on the way. Go there for dinner and drinks and save yourself some money!

after searching for the "perfect" hotel getaway, I choosed the waldorf. I read all previous reviews and went with an open mind. I couldnt have selected a more beautiful, well appointed hotel, it still has all the glamour and history I was expecting. Our room was upgraded to a suite, the appointments were gorgeous, the bed fabulous, linens perfect, this room had it all. I was very pleased with the selection. The front checking was wonderful, easy, fast, the desk staff was friendly, smiling, happy to be working at such a classic hotel. When asking for anything every staff member was friendly and willing to go the extra, I had a wonderful stay at such a fabulous hotel, I would go again, without a doubt.

We arrived around 6pm by limo. The hotel staff in the parking area were to say the least uninterested in our arrival and I had to find one of them to take care of our luggage. We were given what was described as an upgraded room, that was a little disappointing. It could do with some TLC and redecorating. The staff were great, all being helpful and couteous.
A couple of weeks before this stay, we stayed at the Hilton New York and have to say our suite there was more comfortable and our welcome to the hotel more professional. We were really made to feel welcome there. Not as nice as we had expected!

Initial impressions of the Waldorf were poor and nothing happened for us to change our minds.

Queueing in a long line on arrival for reception was annoying and the receptionist just rattled off what was an obvious sales pitch when she asked us if we'd like to eat.

We were in a "king superior" which was spacious and clean, but backed on to 49th Avenue where garbage vans work constantly from 5-10.30pm every weekday emptying out the rubbish from the office block opposite. Forget trying to sleep while this is going on, even if you have jetlag travelling from the UK.

Breakfast in the Peacock restaurant was $33 for the worst buffet I've ever seen or eaten. Actually "buffet" is an exaggeration, there were just a few slices of processed cheese, 2 (!!) slices of inedible meat, some bread and fresh fruit (the melon was disgusting) to choose from. The waiter had the nerve to tell us we couldn't share like we were schoolchildren. Breakfast downstairs serves up a decent fruit bowl with a choice of bread - a mere $28. On the last day of our stay, we went down the road to the deli and had the same breakfast for $10 each.

You have to queue for the concierge as well as reception, this time to be told they didn't have any brollies to lend us. Knowing traders were waiting outside and selling them for $5.

This is a hotel still relying on past glories. The large reception hall is bling Art Deco, as are the ladies restrooms, but behind this grandeur, there's a tired feel to the place. The Waldorf is part of the Hilton group who continue to rely on its previous high reputation and status, charge ludicrous amounts of money for everything and expect people to put up with it. Well, wrong, we'll stay elsewhere next time we're in New York.
