“our stay.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2014

We stayed here just before Chrristmas and were very pleased. W e have stayed in New York before but decided to go to the Waldorf Astoria just for the experience. The breakfasts were quite expensive so for the remainder of out 6 night stay we ate at one of the excellent cafe's nearby. The beds were very comfortable but as we spent a lot of the days sightseeing no doubt any bed would have felt comfortable. The hotel, in our opinion, is still living on it's past reputation, it will have to change it's attitudes nin order to keep that reputation intact.

I have stayed at the Waldorf my entire life.

All of the positive reviews are true. All of the negative reviews are true.

If you are looking for up to the minute conveniences and decorating, then stay someplace else. If you need your car, put in a request at least an hour in advance. This place is a hotel as well as a tourist attraction, so prepare for that because the hotel staff have to deal with everything from lost children from people who are not even staying there to celebrity guests with an entourage.

I stay at the Waldorf for these reasons:

Great upgrades
The best hamburger ever. Delicious fries. In bed.
Art Deco everywhere
In house doctor if needed is superb
I can leave my car here and forget about it
Within walking distance to just about everywhere
Old world charm -- chipped paint does not wig me out, dated trendy things do
It's quiet
The lobby is energized, but the rest of the hotel is a sanctuary
It is super safe
I have never had a personal problem here that was not attended to -- excellent seamstress service
When my son engaged the computerized mini-bar to the tune of $1000+ there was no problem and it was immediately taken off the bill
They respond to courtesy
If you hit them up with a NY problem, they will have a NY solution
Excellent concierge
I can get just about whatever I want if I ask an hour in advance
The beds are so comfortable that I never want to get out of them
My dog loves it

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade

We were placed in a room that I don't think was meant to be rented as a stand alone room - certainly not at the standard rate. The room seemed to be designed as a second bedroom for a larger suite. Even in that capacity, it had apparently not been previously occupied for quite some time. Both the internet and the TV required technicians to visit to return them to working order. The bathtub had a big chunk missing from its surface near the drain. The bathroom walls had peeling wallpaper and evidence of mold where it was peeling and on the adjacent ceiling. The first day we had a crew on window cleaning equipment right outside our bedroom - window level - scraping stuff off the outside walls of the building. At first I thought the Waldorf was just aging poorly. Then I noticed that our room number was xxx2 whereas most room numbers were simply xxx. That fact when combined with the adjoining locked door and the general disrepair of the room and the technology (TV and internet) made my suspicion gel that we were not actually in a standard room with two queen beds as advertised and paid for. When I complained, no one confirmed my suspicions but we did get moved to a nicer room for the last night of our 4 night stay. Without equivocation, I can say that the entrance and lobby are gorgeous. Apparently after that, the Waldorf is a gamble.

We stayed here on a British Airways City Break package for my sisters' birthdays and the value was excellent. The location is good for Broadway and Central Park and the city tour hop on hop off bus stops just outside the hotel. 3 of us shared a large room and it was comfortable. No tea/coffee making facilities are automatically supplied but they were happy to provide them at no charge. The hotel also provided complementary drinks for my sisters' birthdays - a nice touch.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room.

This hotel is very beautiful and the bed was fantastically comfortable and luxurious! The very basic rooms are very basic so if your going to stay at the Waldorf treat yourself and get the next room up with a king bed and dressing room it's totally worth it. By the way, the Waldorf salad is a must have it is Devine!!

I stayed here with a friend for three nights as a girls' weekend away. We come to New York fairly regularly and we have tried quite a few different hotels in Midtown Manhattan. We ended up at the Waldorf Astoria by accident - my friend said that she had always wanted to stay there, but it was only when we arrived and she commented that she thought the "Home Alone hotel was much closer to Central Park" that we figured out that she actually meant she had always wanted to stay at The Plaza.

Anyhow, knowing that The Waldorf has such a fantastic history and reputation as a luxury property we were still very excited to be staying there. The lobby is wonderful and very beautiful. I prefer more modern hotels but I enjoyed the charm of a grand and historic setting. Our check in was quick and easy (no problems with lengthy queues as noted by other reviewers), and the receptionist was very friendly and polite.

It went a little downhill when we reached the room. It was fine: it was clean and as far as New York City rooms go it was a decent size, but it was just really...average. There was nothing remarkable about the room at all. The bathroom was a tiny bit shabby and - I think due to the fact that shower/bathtub combo had a shower curtain and not a glass panel - smelled really badly of damp.

Over the next few days we found that the service wasn't up to our expectations either. Not once did any of the doormen acknowledge us when we came in or out - a real difference from the last time I stayed in New York when the doorman at the hotel welcomed everyone and even remembered their name! We had a drink in the lobby bar one evening and, again, were barely even acknowledged, and when we left our luggage after checking out the porter didn't say a single word - not even a good morning! Given that I rate New York as one of the friendliest, most customer-driven cities in the world, it was really disappointing. Perhaps the Waldorf instructs staff not to be intrusive with their service, but if it's the case then they should re-think as it comes across as being plain rude.

Overall, there was nothing remarkable about this hotel that would make me want to return, which is a shame as I really wanted to fall in love with it. I think it is living off a reputation which may have been well deserved in the past but it has certainly lost its sparkle now. If you want to take in the grandeur of The Waldorf, visit the lobby and go for a drink...you may even be lucky enough to be served with a smile!

Dear AndynLea,

Thank you very much for taking the time to tell me about you and your friends' experience at the Waldorf Astoria. I am devastated to hear that we did not exceed your expectations during your recent stay with us. I am discouraged to learn that our service was not up to par. This is certainly a training opportunity for us. I do hope that you and your friends opt to give the Waldorf Astoria another chance next time you are in New York City.

Thank you,

Having spent hours searching for the optimum hotel in NYC - we decided to stay at the Waldorf Astoria, chosen over the Plaza. It is supreme New York luxury with all of the vintage classic appointments you would expect. Feels very much like a Fairmont Luxury hotel similar to that of the Fairmont in San Francisco. Great service from hotel staff, room was spacious and we loved the marble bathroom. Our rate included breakfast at Oscars which was superb. Buffet style with all the choice of a Las Vegas brunch. You have to sip a cocktail whilst enjoying the piano lounge called Peacock inside the hotel. The location of this hotel is fantastic, so well placed and the ideal hub for a weekend break.
