My girlfriends and I planned a weekend away in NY and the Waldorf Astoria was the perfect choice! Check in was easy and staff were very friendly. Our room was very nice, high up and overlooking the city. It had 2 double beds, then you walked into a large dressing area with 2 large mirrored wardrobes, then into the bathroom. The large dressing area was definitely a plus when it came to getting ready in the evening for three women. I can understand why people say the furnishings are dated and they are somewhat - but I couldn't imagine it any other way. The hotel itself definitely does not fit a hotel in need of modern furnishings but I suppose they could update the furnishings with an olde world type feel, while still being classy and elegant.
We had lounge access for breakfast. You accessed the lounge with your room key. The breakfast foods consisted of different types of pastries, cold cuts, hard boiled eggs, cold cereal, tea, coffee, juices etc. There were not many people in the lounge so it was nice and relaxed, and we didn't feel like we had to rush in and out.
The concierge staff were extremely knowledgeable and we took their advice on places to eat. They were able to get us on the guest list of some exclusive clubs during our stay.
The ambiance of the hotel is of course what some people have come to expect from the Waldorf Astoria. Although there is no dress code requirement it is plain to see that at night, most everyone partakes in dressing the part. We could have spent most of our nights people watching from one of the sofas in the lobby and still had as good a time.
It just so happened that during our stay the G8 summit were there, and Obama was heading in a couple days later so the place was swarming with Secret Service.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Waldorf Astoria so much , we are in the process of planning another trip - with the hopes of making this our annual "girls getaway!
