My girlfriends and I planned a weekend away in NY and the Waldorf Astoria was the perfect choice! Check in was easy and staff were very friendly. Our room was very nice, high up and overlooking the city. It had 2 double beds, then you walked into a large dressing area with 2 large mirrored wardrobes, then into the bathroom. The large dressing area was definitely a plus when it came to getting ready in the evening for three women. I can understand why people say the furnishings are dated and they are somewhat - but I couldn't imagine it any other way. The hotel itself definitely does not fit a hotel in need of modern furnishings but I suppose they could update the furnishings with an olde world type feel, while still being classy and elegant.
We had lounge access for breakfast. You accessed the lounge with your room key. The breakfast foods consisted of different types of pastries, cold cuts, hard boiled eggs, cold cereal, tea, coffee, juices etc. There were not many people in the lounge so it was nice and relaxed, and we didn't feel like we had to rush in and out.
The concierge staff were extremely knowledgeable and we took their advice on places to eat. They were able to get us on the guest list of some exclusive clubs during our stay.
The ambiance of the hotel is of course what some people have come to expect from the Waldorf Astoria. Although there is no dress code requirement it is plain to see that at night, most everyone partakes in dressing the part. We could have spent most of our nights people watching from one of the sofas in the lobby and still had as good a time.
It just so happened that during our stay the G8 summit were there, and Obama was heading in a couple days later so the place was swarming with Secret Service.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Waldorf Astoria so much , we are in the process of planning another trip - with the hopes of making this our annual "girls getaway!

You pay for the name and location, that's it. Rooms are old, technologically challenged, and even smell bad. Not worth it.

The stellar customer service and lobby are the only reasons I would choose the Waldorf on my next stay in Manhattan. The rooms are an average size for NYC standards but dated and in need of some TLC to bring them up to Waldorf standards - particularly the bathrooms. Room was clean but old A/C unit was very noisy. Bathroom were very small. The mid-town location is convenient and you are close to Grand Central Station, which is also a plus. The lobby is grand and well-worth a slow stroll through to people watch and check out the beautiful ceilings and tile work.

We had a great stay at the Waldorf. After reading many reviews, I made a point to email the hotel and request a room with an upgraded bathroom and a functioning AC. The request was met for the most part. We had a superrior king room that had a beautiful large bathrrom that looked newly updated and included a separate shower and bath. Unfortunately, the AC was obviously very old and worked about half the time - suprising for a hotel of this price and supposed caliber. The service was great and the lobby areas are stunning. Food in the hotel restaurants was extremely expensive (think $36 cheeseburgers) but we knew this going in. Overall we enjoyed our stay very much. However, I have no doubt that we could have done better for the price that we paid. We had always wanted to stay at the Waldorf. Now that we have done this, we will definitely stay somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Definitely request a room that has had some updates

Although the rooms are a little dated, I suppose thats part of its charm. Staff were nice, place was clean, its got the history to boot. I went there with my fiancee and we really enjoyed our stay. No complaints.

The hotel is very nice and it has a great location but can't help but get that feeling like your visiting grandma's for the weekend.
The service is amazing and everybody seems willing to help you but the place itself feels a little old even after the renovations.

Room Tip: Choose Non smoking rooms because the smoking ones STINK A LOT!
