“Ok if using Hilton Honors Points”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2007

We've been staying at the Waldorf the last few years around Christmas, always with Hilton Honors points. While it has been a favorite of ours it seems to be losing its luster for us.

The thin walls between rooms are not a problem if quiet guests are staying next door or the adjacent room is unoccupied. However, on a recent trip the baby in the room next door was crying so loudly I was tempted to get up and warm up a bottle myself. On this most recent trip we were serenaded by a teenage girl and her younger brothers' constant squabbles. It was so loud that we could have joined in on the conversation about who used whose toothbrush.

Other little nits included the bathroom light that would not turn off (there was a problem with the switch) and another light in the room where the pull chain was broken off. In order to turn it on and off we had to tighten or loosen the bulb.

For our 3 member family we had a room with two double beds. For a room at this price level there should be more than one night stand with a single lamp between the two beds. It ended up not lighting anyone's reading area.

The beds are comfortable as you would expect but stay away from the $29 Continental breakfast for 1. (Plus $5.50 service charge and 15% gratuity.)

The location is excellent and the gorgeous lobby is still a reason to visit.

We found a great deal on the Hilton website for the Waldorf=Astoria in New York. So great that I was worried when we checked in if it would be honored. It was a surprise birthday trip for my fiance and he had only seen the hotel in movies so needless to say he was impressed (I didn't tell him what I paid for it).

The room was very very pretty, small (but all rooms in NY are small) and clean. It was so romantic that it was hard to believe that we were within the hustle of New York. The view was over the church and we saw a wedding start, very sweet.

We went to the US Open while we were there. Grand Central was so close that traveling to and from was a breeze. The area was nice and we felt pretty safe at night.

My only regret was that we didn't eat in the hotel at one of the fabulous restaurants. Please do and tell me all about it!

A disappointment. This place is relying on past laurels. The guest rooms definitely need renovation: faded carpeting; threadbare furniture; tattered, old-fashioned, roll-up window shades, cracked sink in the bathroom. Service was spotty: couldn't get the attention of a bellman so had to carry our luggage up stairs to the lobby; waited for ages after being seated in the "brasserie" for the breakfast buffet for a waiter to acknowledge us and bring coffee and juice. Once housekeeping entered our room without knocking or any announcement. Definitely not service and accommodations worthy of a five star hotel. I won't go back.

  • Liked — Faded elegance and traditional ambience
  • Disliked — Shabby guest rooms; uneven service

decided to stay here as never been to NY before. Room was old and tatty. Definitely not worth what was paid for. Bathroom wall cracking.. I think they dont think its worth updating the hotel as people would pay to stay in a landmark. Hilton have definitely lowered their standards here. Hotel was central.

Wonderful location. We wanted to stay here our 2nd night in NYC over Christmas just to experience it. It has a grand lobby, though not as grand as the Hilton Chicago we visited earlier this year.

The room was a good size, especially for NYC. However, the bathroom was in disrepair. The paint on the ceiling was peeling off. The carpet nail going into the bathroom kept catching my foot - ouch! Also, the toiletries, which can be a treat at nicer hotels, were a mismatched hodge podge of what felt like leftovers. All different brands, none particularly luxurious.

Once you are out of the lobby, it is sadly just another hotel. There are surely much nicer rooms than what we experienced, however, we booked directly with the property and did not book a "discount" room.

I visited the gym on Monday Morning, Dec 17 and we were charged $15 dollars for the thirty minute visit. I knew this going in and while a little high, I was willing to pay $5 for each mile I ran!

Stayed during February and the weather was the coldest I have ever experienced. We had a 2 room suite with bathroom which was great with large mirrors. Windows 2 sides made the room light but was cosy. Nice view also. Didnt eat in the hotel so can't comment on food but service was good.

Staying at the Waldorf Astoria during the month of December is not cheap, but it is a great way to experience New York. Just a few blocks from Rockefeller Center and a nice walk down Park Ave or 5th Avenue to Central Park. Probably not a good place to take kids, but very nice, clean and friendly staff.
