“Wonderful Sanctuary in the City”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

We recently stayed at the Michelangelo for five nights on a trip to NYC. We were immediately impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the doormen, bell captain and front desk staff. The hotel itself has an old-world elegance and charm that is reflected in every lovely architectural detail. Our room was spacious, impeccably clean, quiet and beautifully furnished and the king-sized bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was large and inviting. My only criticism of the bathroom was that the harsh overhead pot lighting was horrible for putting on makeup so if this is important to you, bring your own makeup mirror!
We did not have breakfast at the hotel but enjoyed drinks in the serene and beautiful lounge on the main level. Some people might find it a bit dull (it's definitely NOT a party place) but we loved it.
The 51st Street location makes the Michelangelo an IDEAL place from which to explore in any direction. It's a fairly easy walk to Central Park, 5th Avenue shopping, Times Square, the subway, a 24-hour pharmacy, excellent restaurants like Patsy's NYC, fun hangouts like Ellen's Stardust Diner, Broadway shows, Rockefeller Centre, and much more.
Even though it's on the high end of our budget, it's worth the splurge. There is nothing better than stepping into this serene and peaceful retreat after a day spent battling the crowds in frantic, bustling, noisy NYC. On return visits to NYC we will be certain to stay there again.

Room Tip: Our room was on the north side of the building facing out on 51st Street, as far away from the eleva...

A boutique hotel I recently used on a business trip to NYC. Well located on 51st street, near Broadway. Expensive, so I had high expectations - room was over $40 a night. Checked in and found my room looked onto the dirty brick wall of adjacent building several feet away. The next day the staff changed me to a room with a better view. The rooms are reasonably spacious, the bed is very comfortable. The curtains cover the below-window ac unit so if curtains are closed, the ac blows air up the window but not into room. The 'breakfast' supplied with the room was very meager, in a basement with no windows, uncomfortable chairs and no attendant. You could pay more and eat in the bar. In the evening the barman was inattentive and gave me bar snacks in a filthy container. Drinks were their usual sky high New York prices.
Overall quite a nice place to stay but some definite weak points

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view of more than 6 feet distance.

I've chosen the Michelangelo five times in six years. My husband and I have been pleased each time: large rooms, including the bathroom [this is rare in Manhattan]; the hotel is clean, elegant and comfortable. Each room we've stayed in has had a sofa/sitting area which is preferable to the standard offered at many other hotels - a chair by a desk! Check-in and concierge services are very good. The central location of the hotel allows us to easily stroll to our favourite museums and luxury shops while also enjoying a nice walk or subway ride to Soho and Lower Manhattan where we usually have dinner and brunch. My most recent visit to the Michelangelo was May 2014 - one change that I didn't love was that the complimentary breakfast pastries and coffee had been downgraded. This service used to be offered in the main floor lobby lounge, with cushy banquettes. Pastries and cappucinos, lattes, teas, were made to order for us. Now, the complimentary pastries are in the basement level, no cappuccino or fancy lattes or espressos are offered - only standard machine coffee and hot water for tea. No tablecloths, tacky muzak, and cold chairs and tables, cafeteria style. This was a downer. The ambience of the hotel - other than this - is elegant, classic and refined. It isn't trying to be hip, it's classic....not old fashioned. The hotel is part of a boutique chain with locations across the world. The company is Italian based and it is a pleasure to hear and see some Italians in the lobby as fellow guests. Improvements - please change back to the complimentary breakfast pastries in the lobby lounge, have tea kettle and coffee machine in the room (not on request), and offer free Wi-Fi. This hotel is quiet - despite its central location. Entering the lobby, one feels like quiet and calm descends on you...this is a great spot in New York!

I was in NYC on business for three days that centered primarily on the theater district so I chose the Michelangelo again. It was very close in price to the Hampton Inn, believe it or not! My room ended in *36 and faced W 51st St - quiet enough but also some natural light, which I appreciated. We had an interior room on my first stay and I didn't care for that much. Friendly, efficient staff - I was thrilled when returning from a morning meeting to find Housekeeping had already service the room by 1030am! One of my pet peeves is having to wait for service. Complimentary Continental breakfast is serviceable - good coffee and pastries - but the room leaves much to be desired. During my last stay it was served in the lobby space which now houses the restaurant. Climate control worked well. I would stay here again!

Room Tip: Room ending in *36 is a larger corner room facing W. 51st Street - quieter than those facing 7th Ave...

Smallish hotel with large quiet and comfortable sleeping rooms. Clean, good climate control and nice bathroom. If accessibility is an issue thus is not the hotel for you. Just far enough off of times square to be good

Room Tip: Watch out for. Rooms facing air shaft.

My husband and I have now stayed at the Michelangelo over ten times and we feel this hotel is our 'apartment' in NYC. We just stayed for 9 days for our annual 'Broadway Week'. We are always treated like family from everyone on the staff and we always look forward to returning. A great hotel with reasonable prices in a great location. You can't do much better than the Michelangelo when staying in New York City.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms are on interior light shafts and they can be quite dark and impossible to tell wha...

the floors are painted black and the window is on an air shaft. The chair is not worthy of sitting and the 'daybed' is too deep to stay in. Somehow we never received any kind of a newspaper. Once my lovely husband went down to get he coffee and the pastry. He only brought the coffee and it was well past sell by date.'There were many lights in the room, but each one needed to be switched on and off separately. I frankly think it spoiled our NYC stay. I believed the hype and then paid top dollar--over $400 per night. WE would not return even if the location is considered fabulous. Maybe we are really the type who belong in a hotel with standard features. We thought we were boutique types, but after a visit with the famous on this site concierge we only received average service. The Indian food we were sent to Utsaka ()sp) was frankly terrible. We were surrounded by Indians from India and the host said that they catered to American tastes! "who in the world would go to an Indian restuaruant for American food????" Clearly the folks near us were not eating shrimp in a a tomato sauce with no spice!

Room Tip: Don't go here
