“Great stay!!”
Reviewed March 9, 2014 via mobile

My wife and I were in New York for a quick weekend trip. The Michelangelo is in a great location- easy walk to 5th ave shopping, Times Square gawking and Central Park. Attractive old school lobby, nice size room, great bed and friendly staff. Definitely, a "go to hotel" for us in NYC.

My 15 year old granddaughter, daughter in law and I visited New York from Feb. 6 to the 11. I cannot rave enough about the hotel. The room was spacious, clean, especially the bathroom area. We had so much room. The beds were the most comfortable beds I have experienced. We were given a room with a street review and had two queen beds. The morning croissants were delicious as was the coffee. The weather was cold but the hotel was so inviting and warm. The location was close to everything we were interested in - the Broadway shows, time square, Rockerfeller Center and close to subways.

Room Tip: We spoke to the assistant reservation manager and he was so great. He gave us a room with a street...

My wife and I stayed at the Michelangelo Hotel in midtown Manhattan this weekend. The hotel is worth considering for its location, room size and online promotions (and the free coffee, pastries and newspapers), but the owners (Starhotels) do not appear to have invested heavily in the property since they took over and remodeled the site in the early 1990's.

A few examples: An "old school" TV set (very difficult to operate with its equally "old school" remote) instead of the flat screen models with navigation menus that have become ubiquitous. (Online checkout? Forget about it.) A toilet flush mechanism in need of repair...unless you are willing to hold down the lever for 30 seconds to trigger its action. A very noisy A/C unit in the room (loud enough to wake the dead), which was necessary even this past February weekend because the room was otherwise too warm and stuffy. An almost total lack of electrical outlets, surprising given today's travelers armed to the teeth with devices. Generally dated (and in some cases, well-worn) furniture, lamps and carpeting.

None of this is a deal-breaker if you care to avoid the large, impersonal chain hotels in the same area (the Hilton, Westin, Intercontinental and so forth)...but it's likely that at least some of these hotels are going to provide a more updated experience for about the same money. In my view, you are going to be disappointed if you expect five-star quality based on some reviews.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms facing 7th Avenue (ours didn't) unless you like street noise.

Thank you for the feedback. I am happy to share with you that since you last stayed with us all the TVs in the hotel have been changed to state of the art flat screen TVs. We have given your feedback regarding the flusher and A/C issue to our engineering team as we have not been hearing that feedback. Please come back and give us another try. Location couldn't be better--close to everything, but surprisingly quiet. Staff are friendly and efficient, and lobby lounge is a comfortable place to unwind. Complimentary continental breakfast features excellent coffee (a big plus)! This was our second stay and we'll definitely return.

A hotel, representative of earlier area of superior service, large and comfortable rooms, quiet elegance, attention to your every need in the center of all that Time Square and the shopping district represents. This was our 6th stay, but will not be our last.

Room Tip: If you want complete silence, ask for a room not on the street side.

This is my repeat stay at this hotel. I really appreciate the fairly quiet hotel.

The rooms are spacious in NYC standard and is well kept by the housekeeping staffs.

Excellent spot for business travel.

Room Tip: Worth the upgrade to a jr. suite.

Stayed at the Michelangelo for a weekend getaway in NYC. The hotel is very well located -- it is within easy walking distance of museums, theaters, and shopping, and is only two blocks from the subway. There were several restaurants (mostly high-end steakhouses) nearby. Front desk staff were excellent and efficient, and room was certainly adequate for NYC (although calling it an "Executive Suite" is a bit of a stretch). The room was clean and very quiet, the bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was OK. The only problem was with the restaurant; although it seemed to be fully staffed, ordering breakfast was an ordeal -- it was difficult to attract anyone's attention, and the food delivery was very slow. The restaurant also opens for breakfast at 7:00 AM; even though breakfast was included in our room rate, we couldn't eat there the last day due to a relatively early flight out of LGA. Overall, a reasonable value in a good location; if they fixed the restaurant, I would have been completely pleased.
