“Lots of potential, but small room size detracts”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

I have stayed in just about every Marriott property in New York, and was looking for a reason to try the Algonquin Hotel since Marriott added it to its Autograph collection. The hotel is in a great location - just a couple of blocks from Times Square in one direction, and 5th Avenue in the other. This is an old historic property, and Marriott, to its credit, spent a lot of money refurbishing what had become a somewhat tired hotel. The rooms are nicely decorated. The lobby is beautifully restored, and the adjacent Blue Bar is trendy and active.

If only the rooms were larger. The room I was in was the smallest hotel room I have every had in New York. I called down to the front desk hoping to get something larger, but it wasn't going to happen - and I've got Platinum status at Marriott. The room was nicely decorated and the furnishings were of high quality. The bed was only queen sized, and took up the majority of the room. There was a small desk with wired and wireless internet. The wireless internet did not work well, and a wired connection was required. The bathroom was clean and nicely remodeled, but way too small. No counter space at the sink, and a small narrow shower stall. Dimensions were approximately 3 feet by 7 feet. Street noise in the room was pronounced, and the room door was thin enough that hallway noise intruded into the room.

Bottom line - This is a nicely restored boutique hotel in a great location, but the bedroom and bathroom size is so small as to make this a difficult place to be comfortable. If you can get a suite, then maybe, but the standard room size would certainly be very cramped for two people.

Room Tip: Request an oversized room or a suite. Be aware, some of the larger room are across from the elevato...

1 of 3 hotels I stayed in during an NYC trip. I wanted to stay in a boutique, and I chose this one since it was a Marriott property. Rooms were tiny...even more so than expected. Especially compared to the Marriott Marquis that I had just checked out of. This location is in walking distance of the heart of Times Square. Very chic. The view was awful. It faced a brick wall with a fire escape. They also have a cat on location that was at the desk during check-in. I dislike cats, so it wasn't exactly what I wanted to see at check-in. Staff was friendly. Good experience, but would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a view.

My husband and I had a great night at the Algonquin. We were upgraded to a suite (due to Gold Marriott status) which was wonderful. It was like having a small apartment. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom had enough room for us, although it did only have a shower. We loved the l'Occitane bath products. We found the staff to be very friendly and we would certainly stay again.

Very nice property but the street room walls are paper thin that I thought our window was open but they weren't... request a room off 44th street... I know it's NYC BUT deliveries at 4:30 am are unexceptable... The rooms are very nice & comfortable... The lobby, we had a late afternoon bottle of wine... Sonoma Cutter that retails for $24 max.... was $74 on the menu... I understand the wine mark up BUT 3 times in a hotel lobby.... Come on guys !!!

Staff was great & service was perfect

Room Tip: DO NOT get a room on 44th street... we were in 411 & at 4:30 am on a Sunday morning a truck was...

We had the pleasure to stay at this beautiful hotel for 2 nights.
We were 2 adults and we've got the king size bedroom.
You can't beat the location of this hotel. It's the best you can get in NYC.
One block from Times SQ, half a block from 5th Ave.. what can you ask for more in NYC??
The lobby is kind of dark and reception area is very small. The front desk is really a desk.. Kind of a counter with very little space to walk through to the elevators (2 of them).
They have nice bellboys out & inside the hotel, however we had a bad experience with a young bellboy literally throwing our luggage one on top of the other into the taxi that took us to the airport.
When I didn't tip the guy, I heard him saying some "nice" words while we were in the cab.
Our room (on the 4th floor) was excellent! Decent sized room for NYC hotels. Enough space to walk around the room and not to feel claustrophobic..
Flat TV, safe, walking closet, small seating bench, docking station for iPhone/iPod (iPhone 4-4S), complimentary bottle of water (2 of them) and earplugs (you will find them in the drawer). You will hear anyone shutting their door on you floor and I guess this is why they give you the earplugs..
Bed is very comfortable and we enjoyed it very much.
On our second day, it was supposed to rain, so we asked the bell boy for an umbrella. It was provided with no problem, but as a luxury hotel, we were expecting to get a nice sized umbrella for 2 carrying hotel name on it and not a $5 one..
Other than that, there is a Starbucks coffee stand right next to the elevators, and you can arrange yourself a cup of coffee until 10AM.
If you have no breakfast in your deal, you can go next door (turn right when exiting the hotel) to a local dinner and get a nice NYC style breakfast for under $12 PP.
Bottom line.. Hotel is great, but improvements on some small things will make it perfect.

Room Tip: Away from the elevators

The lobby was so beautiful and romantic, and Matilda (the cat) was a bonus! Food was a bit pricey, but the wait staff was so nice and so efficient that it was worth it. The room, a suite, was lovely, and well-appointed. I LOVED the light/picture over the bed! When we called room service, our order came immediately! Front Desk was very informative and pleasant, and I'd stay there again in a New York Minute!!

For the good experiences: check-in was easy. Matilda the cat was at the front desk when i checked-in. Lobby is small, intimate bar (i thought i had entered the bar by mistake). Bell hop took me up to the room. This hotel is in a really good location between 5th and 6th. While part of TS, it is away from the tourst frenzy. The bed (a single double bed or very small queen) was comfortable. Cabs were readily available on the rainy mornings.

The not-so-good: i was in room 512 for 2 nites. There was a strong mold smell that i reported to the front desk (who did not seem very interested). Second day desk staff were so busy talking to one another and not very helpful. The room was the smallest of any hotel i have stayed at in Manhattan (i go there regularly). The bathroom is the smallest i have EVER seen anywhere in the world (long but only as wide as a small shower). Shower only, and no place to put stuff on the sink, except in the sink bowl because of the hotel stuff on the very small shelf.

My room had very loud street noise and loud hallway noise. My white noise machine could not block out street noise which was a surprise as central times square hotels are quieter so sleep at the Algonquin came only with the help of chemstry (tylenol PM) and loud whitenoise machine. VERY slow wifi - i complained about this. Their IT people had me run a speed test, and agreed it was slow. Only solution was to use ethernet cable, but my laptop is wireless only, so i had to use my portabe MiFi.

If you are interested in the literary history of this otel, stop here for a martini... But stay somewhere else. I am sad to say this as i am a Marriott person, but could have stayed at the Marriott Marquis for the same rate, but wanted to avoid tourist frenzy.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at the Algonquin Hotel. We apologize that your short time with us did not go as planned. We appreciate your positive comments as well as the items mentioned that require improvement. The Algonquin views feedback as a gift and uses guest commentary as tools of Improvement. With regards to your mention about the smell in the room, the Director of Housekeeping will look into that item and ensure it is addressed accordingly.

Regarding the size of the rooms we are a boutique hotel and consider our rooms to be comfortable and cozy rather than small. Unfortunately our rooms are not large in size but are fully remodeled and equipped with the necessities required for a comfortable stay. We do have suites which consist of a bedroom with a king size bed and a living room area with a pull out sofa bed. For a future visit please consider a Suite category room which I am sure it will be a suitable option for your needs. We provide two options for room location; some rooms face 44th Street for a guest who wishes to be located at the front side of the building. For guests who are noise sensitive and prefer a quiet environment versus a view, we offer rooms facing the inside courtyard of the hotel.

The Algonquin recognizes the growing demand for better Internet service which is why we will be upgrading our Internet access throughout the building. This work is expected to take place in the upcoming months.

Guest experience is personal and attention to detail has always been a focus of the Algonquin Hotel and will continue to be a priority. In the event you plan a future visit, please allow us the opportunity to change your perception and provide you with the exceptional service that you deserve.
