“Central Location in Upper Manhattan”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

Good central location. Clean room. Room service daily. Room perfectly big enough for three friends sharing. Free wi-fi in the lobby!

Close distance to subways, deli's, diners, Times Square, the Rockefeller Center, Broadway and Central Park.
Swimming pool and restaurant were closed for refurbishment.
when we were there.
Still being used to house hurricane sandy victims, so can be extremely noisy!

We signed up to the Big Apple Greeter service before we left, we certainly recommend it as they can show you places you might not explore independently. Ours took us to Harlem.

We bought a week pass for the subway, which was a good investment! We walked miles each day, and used the subway to assist our weary feet!!!!

We visited most of the usual tourist attractions: Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, 9/11Memorial, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, Macy's, Madison Square Gardens, China Town, Staten Island, saw Lady Liberty (Liberty Island is still closed following hurricane Sandy!), Broadway, Brooklyn - we walked the Brooklyn Bridge!! A must do! We headed to Katz Deli, be aware it can be VERY busy!!!!

We certainly made good use of our stay in New York and there are still things or us to go back and do/explore!!!

Returning to our hotel was a pleasure, the beds were very comfortable, but the heating was so hot that although it was February, we slept with our window open!!!
Not all rooms will have experienced the noise from our neighbours, but if you need to make the front desk aware of noise issues anytime after 11pm they are very good at responding!! (for us this was generally anytime between 10.30pm - 5.00 am, tv, shouting, arguing etc, not kidding!!)
That said, we would return to this hotel as our overall experience was good.

Room Tip: Go high for the best views!

The Manhattan at Times Square defines what a budget hotel offers in NYC. If you are looking for an easy walk to Times Square, and the metro, a friendly staff and " relatively" clean hotel on a budget, you may like this hotel. If you are wiling to overlook a rundown appearance, there is only so much caulk can cover up, a hotel packed full of young adults and foreign travel groups, small rooms and bathrooms, you may might here again. The biggest reasons why I will never stay here again is the inability to manage the room temperature. This hotel is old, and as the staff explained it, they can only have heat or air conditioning for the whole hotel. There is no ability to adjust room temperature, other then to "crack the windows open" if its too hot. We spent two sleepless nights in unbearable heat, no recourse offered. The hotel is a great value for the budget conscious traveler wanting to be near Times Square, even more so if you are 20 something and don't really need a lot of sleep. Avoid if you have a kids and want a quite, restful hotel. No pool, exercise room was unusable, old, hot and smelled badly.

An excellent place for a tired business traveler. All the comforts you need to recharge and get back to work in the city that never sleeps.

If that isn't enough, the hotel has a superb gym with equipment that WORKS (a novelty sometimes in hotels around the city) and a staff that actually understands that they are in the hospitality industry not in the "surly-works-just-fine" business.

In two words: all good.

Room Tip: High floor because of the noise in Times Square. You are not in Kansas.

last time I was in NYC, I stayed in a deluxe hotel on Park Ave, and was sceptical about staying in times square, especially after reading some of the negative reviews on here. This hotel is very good. The location is perfect, the staff were lovely and the beds were amazing. This is a much cheaper hotel than I normally use, but I would recommend it to anyone. I took my daughter there for her 18th birthday and we were hardly in the hotel, however, the staff we came in contact with were lovely. on arrival, check in was very quick, a porter carried our cases to our room, the beds were so comfy, the room was spotlessly clean, the shower was warm, the air conditioner/ heater worked well, despite being in Times square the noise levels were low, they kept our cases secure on our last day, absolutely no complaints about this hotel at all. the negative complaints on here are about the hallways being tatty, etc. from the floor we stayed on, the tears are from the cleaners carts, and no one sleeps in the hallways, they are a walkway to your room that is cleaned daily. Take my word for it, I am such a fussy traveller and stay in some excellent hotels around the world and although this is not a deluxe hotel, it is nowhere near as bad as some people on here make it sound.

I stay here occasionally for work. Never had a bad experience. Right in the heart of Times Square. Clean rooms. Nice staff. Elevators are a little slow. I recommend this hotel to out of town friends all the time.

We stayed at the Manhattan earlier this month for 3 nights. The location is wonderful if you plan to see shows on Broadway and the subway is convenient for other activities or sightseeing. The beds were comfortable and the rooms clean, but appear "worn." They could use updating. Also, the heating system was overpowering. We had to open the window to cool the room down, even with the heat turned off in our room. I think this hotel is a relatively good value for the area, and we would consider staying there again. The hotel is remodeling at this time and there is no bar or restaurant in the hotel.
