“Great location, helpful staff”
Reviewed August 14, 2007

The hotel is a bit old, but the location was great (near plenty of shopping) and the service was excellent.

I was able to get a low rate going right after New Year's so it was definitely a good value.

I'd stay here again.

I stayed here with my 15 year old daughter in December '05. The hotel is lovely, nicely decorated, very clean, brilliant location. Quiet at night. We couldn't fault it, the staff were very helpful and the doormen too. Can't wait to go there again!! Two satisfied customers.

I agree with some of the other recent reviews that the rooms are in need of a refurbishment. We had a deluxe one bedroom apartment and it was a lovely big size but the furnishings (especially fittings in kitchenette and bathroom) were shabby. I was particularly disappointed as we had not got this room cheaply and thought splashing out a bit would guarantee a bit more luxury. The wooden chests did smell musty (perhaps scented drawer liners would help!) but, to be fair, the beds/bedding were spotless. Having just moved from the Travel Inn on 42nd St where we were confronted with used bedding with other people's hairs and stains on, this was more of a relief than it perhaps should have been. You can also choose your own type of pillow if you're into that sort of thing.

On a positive note, we liked the quiet setting and friendly staff.

Less positive - the bars are heaving with non-residents making it almost impossible to use them. Also, the doorman promised us he had booked an SUV to take us to the aiport. Come 6am that morning, no doorman, no SUV and no yellow cab willing to take four of us and four massive suitcases to JFK airport. In the end, after much frantic running round, finally found a cab driver who would let one of us sit on a suitcase! We just made check in.

The Shelburne Murray Hill is on a relatively quiet street 5 blocks from Grand Central Station. Our room was nicely furnished and comfortable and had a kitchenette. It had lots of drawers and cabinets and a homey feeling. housekeeping was quick and thorough. The staff is friendly and responded immediately to our one request, for a second chair so we could both eat at the desk (there was no other table). I asked for a quiet location and it was that - the view was of other people's windows. Some of the other rooms have views of the Empire State Building. The restaurant has been voted as having the best hamburger in NYC and I have to say it really was an excellent burger, though an expensive one. There are many restaurants and groceries nearby. Note that starting September 2007 they plan to renovate.

Terrible is possibly a little unfair, but as the next option available is okay, then I must select 'Terrible'. We stayed at the Shelburne during the last week of July and was very dissapointed with our experience. Our room was in desperate need of decoration and all of the furnature was in need of replacement (the sola being grimey and well worn) although our bed was very comfortable. The shower head was hanging off the wall and there was a three inch diamiter hole in the wall behind it. Before our trip we had read the reviews of the "marvelous" root top garden, but unfortunately during our four night stay was unable to check this out for ourselves as the roof top was too crowded with non-hotel guests. Overall a very dissapointing experience of this hotel and we would no doubt be able to find a more superior hotel in NYC at a similar cost without too much difficulty.

We spent one night at The Shelburne Murry Hill. We found the front desk employees to be friendly & helpful. Our room was very nice, quiet, comfortable bed, small kitchenette. Pretty view from the window. We have stayed at some potential horror story hotel rooms so this was a relief for us.
The rooftop deck has a wonderful view & we enjoyed ourselves up there for a little cocktail before heading off to dinner.
I would definitely stay here again.

We had high hopes for the Shelburne given its many fine reviews and photos of the accomodations on the Affinia website. I don't know when those photos were taken ... maybe 15 to 20 years ago???! Yes, the units are spacious, but they are extremely worn and in dire need of refurbishment!!! We found the staff to be very solicitous, but wallpaper was beginning to peel from the walls ... the wood furniture which was no doubt beautiful at one time looked like it came from a flea market ... the sofa was soiled and torn... the lamps worked but were old and in poor condition ... the baseboards were in terrible condition as was the carpet, and yes, there was a musty "old building" kind of smell. I'm afraid the overall feel of the place for us was depressing. The Shelburne Murray Hill was no doubt a lovely, warm and wonderful hotel at one point, but not today. The beds are comfortable and clean and the staff was wonderful to us; however, those beds and the staff need to be in a refurbished environment for the place to receive anything more than 2 stars. In the meantime, you'll want to manage your expectations of the place or you're going to be disappointed. Sorry.
