“Excellent all round.”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

Just got back from an amazing trip to NY.
All the staff at The Affinia Shelburne were fantastic and could not have be more helpful if they tried.
It is in a great location for exploring this amazing city. Just a few blocks from Grand Central Station, just on the edge of Midtown it's location is a massive plus point for it.
See if you can get a front facing room to get views of The Empire State Building. Definitely a big bonus waking up to that every morning.
The room was well appointed and spacious. Plenty of room to spread out and still do some exercise with the aid of the Fit Kit that came on request free of charge. There's also a good fitness centre on the second floor.
The bed was incredibly comfortable I don't think I have ever had such a good nights sleep in a hotel even with the street noise and air conditioning.
The Rare Bar and grill downstairs do excellent burgers and the staff in there as with everywhere else in the hotel very attentive and helpful.
Unfortunately the roof top terrace wasn't open due to the current building works but that was my only tiny gripe.

Room Tip: Choose a front facing room for views and as high up as you can get. Avoid Room 202 it's in bet...

Stayed at this hotel for 4 nights while in New York. Great location only 5 minutes walk from Grand Central and all the sights. Only need to be aware that the hotel will swipe your credit card and put a hold of $100 on it. I paid using a pre paid money card and it took 21 days to get credit by which time I was back in UK

Room Tip: Ask for a high level room to escape the noice of the city below. We were on the 16th floor and hardl...

Dear Derek S,

I am so pleased you enjoyed our proximity to Grand Central and most NYC hot spots to visit in and around our midtown location. We do authorize credit cards for USD$25.00 per day to cover the cost of incidental charges that you may incur during your stay by posting charges to your room. On the day of your check out any unused authorizations are released back to your credit card issuer. Your credit card issuer can typically take 5-7 business days to release the authorization but credit card issuers have varying policies and can sometimes take less or more time. I hope this helps and I certainly look forward to your return.

One of best hotels I have stayed in New York, room size in particular. Other reviewers have suggested similar things, renovations not complete so no roof top bar yet, no free wifi unless in lobby and payment for use of computer if you don't have one yourself. This is a shame as free wifi is expected and should be included.
The room was very spacious and the bed enormous, we managed to get our room at half price, even better. The position was great, mid town, a few blocks to Grand Central Station, Empire State building and Chrysler building. We got the train from JFK with no bother and actually walked to the hotel with luggage.
We only had a drink at the bar in the Rare bar and grill but staff were friendly and the place always seemed busy. I would definitely stay here again

Dear BrissieExplorer,

We would definitely love to host you again to be your destination of choice in NYC. Please note the rooftop closure is a temporary situation as we work to fix a few things on the exterior as required by law and will soon reopen in time for July 4th festivities. Our location is ideal and terrific if you want to be close to the excitement of Midtown, yet just far enough from the bustle of touristy areas. I look forward to your return and meeting you at Wine Hour.

The hotel is newly renovated, lovely rooms and amenities. Sadly, the rooftop lounge wasn't open yet. The Rare restaurant was terrific. No free wi-fi wasn't in room, only in Lobby. They charged $15 a day for room wi-fi. Very convenient to many restaurants, sightseeing locations. Pretty good value for midtown location.

Room Tip: The smaller rooms have better views.

We live in Washington DC and sometimes come to New York city. This is the only hotel I will stay in in NYC. We absolutely love it. The location is fantastic, the rooms are great, service is extremely polite and helpful. We love the comfortable beds, the large bathroom, and the overall experience is great. We will definitely be coming back and we have yet to be disappointed. So far this has been a great hotel.

Dear Agulinka,

We feel the same about you! We absolutely love being your first choice destination in NYC. I look forward to welcoming you back at our hotel and hope to meet you at our complimentary Wine Hour held 7 days a week in our Lobby. Our location is central to all the excitement of Midtown but not located in a tourist centered area, so you feel like a real New Yorker returning home in the afternoon, except to a much bigger space. Our rooms are actually larger than most NYC apartments.

I've been all over the US & internationally traveled as well, but I just returned from my very first trip to NYC! We only had 4 days and a toddler in tow, so we had to make the most of it, starting with a stellar hotel.

And a stellar hotel we did find in the Affinia Shelburne! Location location location. This hotel is in midtown on the east side, and a 4-5 block walk either direction to subway connections which is key. You really get the feeling of being in a neighborhood (Murray Hill) and there are fantastic restaurants & shops within walking distance, which to someone like myself who likes to "live like a local" instead of a tourist, is important.

The room we had was spacious; my husband has traveled into NYC over the years and even he was surprised at the size of our room! (A studio w/ a king bed). The decor was modern, clean, & plush, which is exactly our style & what we expected for a boutique hotel such as this one. We were given an interior room so no view of busy Lexington Ave, which in hindsight was just fine, as we appreciated the silence! Though we didn't spend a whole lot of time actually in the room, having a mini kitchenette was also great because we kept fresh fruit & juice for our toddler to snack on.

As for the rest of the hotel space - we didn't stick around much as we wanted to be out & about in the city, but the lobby was sleek & comfortable, and the attached bar/grille looked up to par though we didn't actually go in. They've got W/D facilities in the lower level should you need them (we actually did, since my son "aka Linus" dropped his blanket onto fresh asphalt). The staff was very pleasant, everyone was helpful in giving guidance on where to go, where to eat, etc.

I've given a 4/5 rating only because the rooftop deck was closed, which to be honest was one of the reasons I booked here in the first place, but overall we had a great experience and I'd definitely recommend this hotel to others.

Dear ElizabethStriegel,

You’ve written a stellar review! I really appreciate the time you took to detail your first trip to NYC. We love hosting families and our “Deluxe” accommodations are certainly up to the task. All Deluxe rooms come with a kitchenette which is a huge bonus when you need that invaluable convenience in NYC. I am so glad our team helped you to make the most of NYC. Please note the rooftop closure is a temporary situation as we work to fix a few things on the exterior as required by law. I look forward to your return for your next visit.

Rooms generous for NYC; fresh, quality bedding, nice decor, friendly and service-oriented staff. The hotel isn't hip, but why spend $100 or more per night for a glass-walled bathroom or cool bedside light? Location is near subway but Murray Hill is spared the tourist hordes of full-on midtown. Best of all, the hotel is quiet.

We loved having a kitchenette, and took a suite b/c one of us snores. The "B&B in the City" package includes full breakfast, which we enjoyed- didn't have to go out searching for breakfast. All in all, terrific value in a clean, well-run hotel. Definitely recommend!

Dear Duchesse,

Wow! What a terrific review. We loved reading that you will definitely recommend us and we hope you will be back soon. For only a few dollars more guests can choose to upgrade to one of our studios or suites that feature a very functional kitchenette. Our rooms are larger than most NYC apartments and our location in Murray Hill is close enough to all NYC has to offer, yet just far enough away from the tourists.
