“Ok but I wouldnt stay again”

Essentially theres nothing wrong with this hotel if you know what you are getting. My fiance recommended it as we wanted a cheap hotel for 2 nights which was clean, and thats exactly what it is.
Its incredibly basic - we had 2 single beds, one which slid out under the other bed. It did make it very snug when you had 2 people and 2 suitcases! The shower was actually very powerful and we had a great view over the Hudson River. There wasnt any noise at night, and the room was cleaned during our stay.
My main issue was the location, which obviously i knew about when i booked so i cant moan. However as 2 girls, i didnt feel safe walking around the area at night. In hindsight, i wouldve prefered to have paid more and been more central. Plus hailing a cab to get back is a nightmare!
Wifi isnt great and only in the lobby, but theres so much wifi out and about that it didnt matter.
If youre looking for a cheap place to stay, its fine, but just wasnt for us.

We stayed at the Riverside Tower Hotel for 12 nights. Our first impressions was - oh crap, what did we get ourselves into????
I AM NOW QUOTING ANOTHER REVIEW. The building dates from the 1920's when it was constructed as a Columbia University dorm and thankfully has never been redesigned though it has been updated in essentials like windows, showers and elevator. The fact that it's old, the paint is thick, the pipes and radiators are visible, and the rooms are minimal size makes it not only an authentic New York antique, but serves as a model of modest sustainable habitability, in which every square inch of space is functional.

Yes our room was tiny, we shared our bathroom with the couple we came with, and they had the fridge. Our rooms were very clean, lots of hot water and shower has lots of room, and towels changed daily, sheets changed every 3 days.

TV had 4 channels - but they are New York channels which was really great. This started to "put things together for us who have never been to New York before" For example: the Macy's Parade, the blowing up of the balloons, the lighting of Xmas tree at Rockefeller Centre - We went to Macy's prade, saw the tree in Rockefeller Centre etc. wifi only on 1st floor which was ok, and no problems signing on to.

Over 12 days ALL the staff were great. They helped us out - with each and every request we had.
Location is excellent. We came back to hotel at ALL hours - and felt very safe. Yes, staying at the Riverside Tower Hotel was a GREAT experience. Thanks to ALL the staff.

well, to be honest, its not altogether unliveable. But it isnt a hotel. it seems more like a student hostel deluding itself to be something else. And considering that the building used to be a columbia university student hostel, you can see where I am coming from.

I booked a 4 person room, which was really two rooms connected by - guess what- the toilet. the carpet was worn out and dirty. room was dusty. only great thing was the view over the hudson, and i guess theres some charm in being in something so quaint and odd. the beds were a double bed and a single bed with another pull out. What is this? i felt like a little kid on a sleepover. Look im not being picky, but theres a certain amount of cleanliness and comfort you ought to give to guests when guests are paying a still decent sum. the microwave and fridge were nice little additions so thank you.

Yes, its arguable that you get what you pay for. but i moved to a hotel downtown and paid merely 20% more than i did here. If the competition downtown charges 20% more for something 5 x better, you dont logically expect most people to want to stay here.. so dont use the "this guests needs the Waldorf Astoria" argument on me. you dont need to pay much more for something decent at all. this hotel really needs to buck up. im sorry. it has to admit that.

Nevertheless, if you really dont mind all these, then note that the elevators are old and slow, wifi is only in the lobby, which i constantly could not connect to and the staff had to reset (they acknowledged to me that this was a frequent problem).

then get it fixed! gosh. you could see the annoyance of the guests who were accidentally logged out from the net when the staff ahd to reset it. not to mention the strange musky smell throughout the lobby with cheap plastic chairs which resembled some social welfare office.

So yes to end it all with some positives. The staff were OK and pleasant. theres a weird odd charm about being in this place since its like some abandoned school hostel. the metro is nearby with lots of shops and restaurants. and you save a couple of quid a night if you just want a place to sleep and bathe, instead of a nice hotel with clean rooms and breakfast and free hot drinks all day, by all means stay here.

Room Tip: higher rooms get you a view over the hudson

I stayed here two nights last week. The location is excellent as noted by other reviewers here. The staff was helpful and courteous. And the rate was wonderful for NYC.

The rooms are incredibly small. I was amazed at how they were able to shoe-horn so much into so tiny a footprint. The bathroom was kinda cool with nice tile but the shower was so small it was really tight to just lift my arms up to wash my hair. Closing the bathroom door was just about impossible if I was in the bathroom even just standing at the sink. And the sink was so small that the faucet covered much of the basin.

The TV was very small and had only a few channels. No big deal unless you love to kick back in your room for long periods of time. If that's you then don't stay here...

The only concern I think you'd really want to be aware of is that the door has only a single locking knob. No deadbolt and no chain. Was no worry for me but a woman traveling alone might rightly be concerned about security because of this.

It was all serviceable and just fine for this stay but you should know what you're in for if you plan to stay there.

The good: Hotel is a five minute walk from #1 subway and Zabars; some rooms on upper floors (9 and above) have views of Riverside Park and New Jersey; front desk staff were welcoming; room rates are low by NYC standards. The bad: no lobby; no in-room wifi; housekeeping okay but not great. The ugly: an old, down-at-the-heels facility; small rooms with strange layouts; furniture falling apart; tiny elevators and corridors. It was reminiscent of the SROs that used to be all over the West Side but which by now have pretty much disappeared. We had a two bedroom 'suite', which consisted of two very small rooms not much bigger than the twin or double bed they contained, connected by a narrow bathroom containing tiny shower and toilet. Each room had a sink that was so small that it bordered on the unusable. One room had a tv on a dresser which was *behind* the head of the bed (i.e. so it was unwatchable), and the dresser was so close to the bed that the drawers couldn't be opened. And then in the middle of the night the tv started turning on by itself - after being awakened about a half dozen times, I finally located the plug and unplugged it from the wall socket. Quirky with a Capital Q! But if price is paramount and it is only for a few nights, then given the location it may be worth a try. Just remember that you get what you pay for.

What you see is what you get. Rooms are tiny but clean. Staff is kind. Location is excellent: residential neighbourhood, 2 blocks from subway, nice restaurants nearby. If you believe all you want from a hotel in the big apple is a good shower and a nice bed make this an option. Make sure to ask for a remodelled room. And get a double room even if you are travelling by yourself, they are a but more spacious.

Close to city center, nice safe residential area and wonderful views from the room of the Hudson river and Riverside park. Close by there is cafe called Zabar's. One of the best gourmet deli's I have ever been to!
Building was very old, but I suppose the location made all the difference. Fair value for the money paid.
