“Great spot for single traveler”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

|Don't judge the hotel by its scruffy public areas -- the rooms are spotless and well maintained. The location is great. The M5 bus which runs down most of Manhatten is across the street and the 79 which goes past most of the north/south bus and subway lines is one block away. The neighbourhood has lots of places to eat, shop etc.The fridge and microwave were very convenient as was the loan of dishes and even a corkskrew. The staff was very helpful. The room was very small but suited me well.

First of all the hotel has an excellent location and very nice neighborhood. The rooms are small, but OK, we were in a suite, which is a bit more convenient, at least one of the rooms. It had 2 rooms connected with the bathroom (shower and toilet). The smaller room had a double bed, and that room was really small, you could not fully open the door for the corridor because of the bed, and you could hardly open your suitcase on the floor. The other room was larger, though it had a twin bed, where one of them was stored under the other. In a corner it had a TV and in another a table with 2 chairs. Otherwise it was clean, and nothing fancy.
And we did not care cause we were in NYC, we had fun and the location was really excellent.
They have free wifi, and the staff was friendly.

Room Tip: As I know the suites have larger rooms

It took about 30 minutes to get there from JFK by cab at night.

The rooms are small and mine had a slightly musty smell, I would consider the accomodation to be worth the money though if you consider where the place is and how quiet the rooms are.

The closest train station is a 5-10 minute walk away and you can get to most tourist atractions in a few minutes from there.

There are grocery shops and laundromats within walking distance, Central Park West and the Natural History Museum are within walking distance. There is a park across the road from the hotel from which part of the Hudson River can be viewed..

There are brochures in the lobby suggesting tourist activities for less well planned tourists and the staff are friendly and willing to help out where they can.

Decent hotel which offers good value for money. Rooms are nothing fancy, but location is nice at tranquil area. The nearest subway station is also close, so getting around is easy. The hotel gave a safe impression, and during our stay there was no annoyances, even the noise of traffic wasn't that bad. Air conditioning worked fine, and there was always warm water in the shower, so all the essential things were in order. The price seemed to be low for Upper West Side, we payed 139 USD / per night in late June. As I travel mostly in Scandinavia, I'm used to higher quality of building (f.ex electrical installations), but I assume this hotel is well worth it's price also in this sense in NYC.

Room Tip: The hotel is a thin tower by the river, so almost all rooms have view to the Hudson River.

I stayed at the Riverside Tower four times already... It's not a great place, but it is excellent for the value of being in Manhattan for less than $80/night.

The rooms are small but clean and effective, plus, for that rate per night, maybe one of the only places in NYC that has an inroom bath in it.

The staff are super friendly and the place is two blocks away from a good bistro and deli as well as the 79th subway station.

Main downside, the internet connection is only available in the reception area.

This hotel could do with updating its decor but it is in an excellent location, just a few 100 meters from the 79th street subway stop on the red line, really close to Central Park and the Hudson River. The hotel staff were helpful and kind enough to help us find a left luggage place downtown near Penn station. We had a double bed in our room, a TV, desk and chair and the all important private (i.e. not sharing with other people on our floor - not always the case on Manhattan) bathroom, with shower, toilet and sink. Everything was functional in the room, the wifi only works in the hotel lobby however. When in New York on holiday though, how much time do you spend in your hotel? So all in all, very happy with our stay.

I’ve stayed at this hotel four times, and I hope to go back many more. I use this convenient hotel as a place to sleep so I can spend my days – and my money -- enjoying New York. The hotel is very basic, but it is a great bargain compared to others in New York that charge twice as much yet offer little or nothing more. It is conveniently located in a quiet and lovely neighborhood, and is within a 15-minute walk of Central Park, the Natural History Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum. The rooms are indeed simple and small, but they are clean and comfortable; I always sleep soundly and comfortably and awake refreshed. Each room has a private bath, which can be hard to find in New York at this price. The building is 100 or more years old, and the public spaces are quite modest. Corridors are about as narrow as those in your average house and the carpeting in them is quite old, but who spends much time in corridors? I have never found any odors anywhere in the hotel. There is a pleasant common room on the ground floor, but I’ve never used it. The attendant at the front desk is always friendly; one even recognized me one year after my previous stay! I always see Europeans when I stay here – they know a good bargain when they see one. If you are expecting the Hilton, you will be disappointed. But if you seek inexpensive, convenient, no-frills lodging you will be well served. I hope this place never closes!
