DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Metropolitan - New York City
Ranked #335 of 471 Hotels in New York City
Reviewed November 26, 2012

We stayed at the Doubletree Metropolitan over Thanksgiving weekend. We were able to walk a few blocks to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Many other tourist sites are within walking distance, for example, MOMA. There are also many large department stores and restaurants in the area. We were able to easily get to other parts of the city using the subway, which has a stop right outside the hotel.

We felt that this hotel was not as nice as other Hiltons where we have stayed. The outside of the hotel looks very dated but the room was okay and large by New York standards. The lobby of the hotel has lots of room to wait if your room isn’t ready. The housekeeping staff was excellent. There is no coffeemaker in the room. They charge to store luggage, which is the first time I have run into this. My husband used the gym, and he said it was a good gym. The Business Center does not charge to use the computers, which was a nice touch.

The bed was really comfortable and we appreciated the blackout curtains. We both slept very well here. If the price was right, we would stay here again.

Having requested an assessable room I expected to at the very least have the room ready on time, and one reasonably close to the elevator (I use a cain, not a wheelchair). The room was not read until 3:45 pm. The room was much too hot and there was no way to lower the heat to less than 75 degrees (naturally the windows don't open). There is virtually no place to place bathroom supplies, medications, toiletries, etc. there is no place to hang a full length coat, the dead bolt on the door did not work; the door was cracked open three times the first night we were there. Bottom line: the shower for which we requested assessable room was great, the door men were very helpful with getting cabs (the porters, however, lost our luggage which we had to "check" with them since this room was not ready; fortunately we went into the disorganized holding area for luggage and found them on our own. NOTE: do not leave your luggage unless you have a separate tag for each piece!). We will go out of our way to not return to this most unsatisfactory hotel.

The location is excellent, you can walk to times square and additional there is a metro station near from the hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff was nice. I would stay in this hotel again.

Room was utilitarian at best, no temperature control so had to open the window, noisey, to cool it down and this is winter. Elevators are a nightmare and Saturday morning 11/22/2012 only 2 working one of which would go to the 2nd floor and then go back to 18, people rode it three times and we eventually go out at two and took the stairs! Front desk staff disengaged and disinterested, is our economy really in a down turn? From this service we must be in boom times in NY! In general the hotel is run down without one apparent redeeming quality other than location.

I've stayed in a number of Manhattan hotels and trust me the size of the room is a deal breaker for me. They tend to be so tiny that me and my husband can barely move without bumping into each other. At the Doubletree, you so get that space that we all so covet in NYC. The room was pretty spacious and comfortable. The bathroom on the other hand was tiny as usual. Location is great. Quite central with many excellent restaurants around. I will recommend it for business since the metro lines are not as practical as one would want but cabs are so cheap in NYC that I always spoil myself. Best part, try the chocolate place right under the hotel. Its divine.

We arrived at 2300 and Stephanie checked us in. We had read all the tripadvisor reviews so we knew the hotel was a great location for the places we wanted to go, but also, 51st and Lexington's police and fire station are sometimes noisy at night so we asked for a room away from the roads. Stephanie was amazingly helpful and upgraded us to a much larger, very clean room with two double beds in the quietest part of the hotel.
Throughout our stay we found the staff culture was to be helpful, courteous, professional and competent. When we asked how to get to questions they gave us a map with highlighted directions and best transport.

Room Tip: "Rooms on the south side are quieter"

Arrived to a very poor welcome from receptionist, very matter of fact and monotone. Room was a king on 11th floor looking out onto 51st - room looked ok and was a reasonable size, best bid was the bed linen and pillows - they were the best I've ever felt !!!!! Free wifi in reception/bar area was good and fast. None f our interactions with any of the Doubletree staff were positive, happy or had the feel good factor - reception, concierge' bell boy and door man - all we're down right miserable. Location was good for everything - didn't buy anything in hotel as Cafe Metro next door for coffee and breakfast etc - best breakfast by far in terms of service, food and price was the Vienese Deli on 46th and Lexington - it's a bit scruffy looking but the service and food was far superior to any other top charging places we visited - I had pancakes, sausage and eggs plus unlimited coffee top ups and my husband had ham steak which was at least an inch thick, eggs, toast and potatoes - all for $17.50 - the place is a little gold mine and locked out with locals everyday - if you can overcome the scruffy interior you 'll enjoy the rely personal service, guaranteed. Back to the Hilton - would I stay here again - No way
