“Great location for a city break in NYC.”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

Hotel location was perfect for getting to most parts of the city centre
This is why we booked this hotel in the first place, second was the price.
Its a small hotel and quite old so don't expect modern ,looks better from the outside than inside.
The pricing of the rooms in the hotel was very good but (only problem was we didn't get a view as we would have liked and asked for this when booked ) The room was quite a good size and the bed was amazing the biggest and best one I've ever slept in. but the lack of a window made it feel like you were very closed in .
The staff are great, very helpful and checking in was fine we arrived a bit early the room wasn't ready so we left our bags with the porter in a locked storage room ,we came back an hour later and the room was ready.
It felt a bit weird at first that you had a bullet proof screen between you and the staff on the desk but you got use to it after a couple of days (we didn't find the area rough in anyway.) I went out most morning very early and felt safe walking the streets on my own .
Hotel is walking distance to most places of interest, Times square only a few blocks away,
Empire State Building right behind you ( so you can arrive early in the morning ) ,Penn station a couple of blocks away if you want to get a tube.(subway was brilliant to get to most places fast )
The hop on and off Bus trips around the city are a must just around the corner from the Hotel right outside empire state building.
This is a brilliant way to find out about the city and some of the guides on the buses are hilarious. We did both day and night bus trips and was a very easy way to navigate the city.
we also went on a helicopter trip over the city this was down near battery park (use subway or bus) this was amazing and the view you get is awesome, well worth the money ( we got here early I would advise doing the same ) we didn't even need to queue so was even better. I would also advise to Check out details before you visit .
Overall the HERALD SQUARE HOTEL is a great little hotel in a perfect location ,a good price ,clean and good staff and service (try and get a room with a view)
ps. try restaurant next door its also great well worth a visit lovely food and great service.

Room Tip: try and get a room with a view

We stayed at this hotel on December 14th. The location was great (3 blocks from Penn Station) and the price was amazing. The hotel itself is older, but very clean. Staff was also very friendly and helpful. If you are a hotel snob, do not stay here. If you are like us and only spend a few hours in the room to sleep, then this is a great deal.

The hotel has a wonderful warm atmosphere and any of the staff that we spoke to were very friendly and helpful. Without even having to ask the lovely man that checked us into our room handed us a subway and city map and offered us suggestions for places nearby to eat, very helpful considering it was our very first visit to NYC. The lobby has a free coffee and hot chocolate machine which is a really nice touch and was much appreciated on a cold and snowy visit in December.
The hotel has an interesting layout but the rooms were very clearly marked and were surprisingly big inside. They were impeccably clean and very warm and comfortable. We stored our luggage in lockers available in the lobby for $2 which saved having to lug them around the city, they were perfectly secure and we felt safe leaving our luggage there. The location is ideal as well, just off 5th avenue on 51st Street, there's is a subway station 5 minutes away but it is very easy to walk to most of the main city sights. I would highly recommend staying at the Herald Square hotel and will definitely stay here again on my next visit on NYC.

We stayed here the weekend before Christmas and I highly recommend it! The location is fantastic, just around the corner from Macys. Staff were helpful at all times, you do have to be buzzed in but that didn't bother us at all, I like the idea people can't just wander in and out of the hotel, felt safe, desk was manned 24 hours a day. The room was ok in size (two double beds) New York rooms are always small anyway, it was clean and serviced daily, beds were comfortable and shower was hot.

If you are travelling to shop or sightsee like we were then I highly recommend this hotel, we used it as a base to shop and somewhere to sleep. I would hate to spend a fortune on a hotel and never be in it, so if it's a budget hotel you want that is clean and in a great location then this is the place for you!

Room Tip: No matter what NYC hotel you stay in I would recommend a high floor as the streets are noisy through...

In NYC you can pay a lot or not much. You get what you pay for. This hotel was not alot. The room was clean and there was a hot shower. The only light was over the bed and they were dim. Not alot of space b/t the bed and walls. In the lobby, there was free coffee & cocoa. The location is b/t 5th & 6th ave. Great spot. You had to knock to be let in at night and the hotel staff were behind glass-- a little odd. We walked to Macys and up 5th ave. I look at it this way. I felt it was clean and safe. The price was good. It depends what you are looking for in a hotel. We just slept there. If I were going to hang out there- I would spend more $ and stay someplace else.Oh, the elevator was small and slow.

This place is not as cheap as Hotel 31 or Pod 51 but better and they were both full. You pay for a private bath and I stayed here for two nights on the weekend for around $400 so, not bad. The rooms were very nice I thought. High ceilings and marble baths. Beds were comfortable and the TV and the internet worked fine. Location could not be better for Manhattan and close to subways. They have a nice lounge down stairs with free coffee and a window that looks out on 31st St. Lockers to store your luggage if you arrive before their 3:00pm check in time are roomy and only $2. The bullet proof window between me and the desk clerk was a little off putting but everybody was certainly nice enough. A bar would have been nice but I can’t think why anyone would pay more.
