“Fancy name, so so service”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

We stayed on one of the busiest (and warmest) weekends of the holiday season. Room Air conditioning (yes, A/C in December) was LOUSY. The bathroom sink hot water trickeled. The lobby was always mobbed and the air so stale. People sleeping all over the lobby furniture, if they had rooms, why weren't they in them? Got nickled and dimed for luggage stowaway and a bell with a snappy tonque and an attitude. No thanks. We will stay elsewhere, maybe the nice Westin across the street?

We stayed one night during the Christmas break. We had a terrific experience at this hotel and would stay here again!
Location: a great location. Adjacent to Grand Central where you can get the subway to anywhere or access various eateries at multiple price points and stores. Also in walking distance to Bryant Park, Empire State, Macys, Time Square. Its nice to be away from the madness of times square/theater district, especially during the Christmas holidays.
Staff: We found the staff to be exceptionally nice. We arrived early (10 AM) and did the check in at the self-serve computer when a very nice and professional employee asked if he could be of assistance. We said our room wasn't ready, as we expected, and he suggested we go to the desk to see if they could find one. A very nice woman helped us at the desk- wish I remembered her name. She was very helpful and extremely nice to our kids (age 5 and 7). She upgraded our room, gave us an $8 voucher for the Market Shop (food, snacks, beverages), coupons for free coffee, and the access code for free wifi. We booked our room on hotels.com and just booked a standard room with 2 doubles. We were quite pleased with all of these extras! They texted us during the day to let us know our room was available. When we returned there were 3 cookies and a bottle of wine waiting for us! Such a nice touch!!! Thank you Hyatt!!!

Room: Our room was very nice- huge walk in closet, which was kind of random. 2 double beds and small modern couch. We had a great view. We also had a mini fridge in our room. The bathroom was small, but serviceable and clean. We thought the rooms were very clean and modern, comfy beds. No carpet- fake hardwoods I think, which I liked- made it seem cleaner.
The elevators were slow at times, but it was fine and expected for a big hotel. The lobby was big, with lots of seating. There is a $3 bag free if you need the hotel to store you luggage for the day. My husband went to the bar with a friend and said it was nice, but pricey. They could have gone elsewhere, but it was convenient.
All in all a great hotel....would definitely recommend. We had a fabulous stay and will check this hotel out again.

Attached to Grand Central Station. Shopping and food in the station as well as on the street (Park Ave). Folks working in the hotel were nice. Close enough to 5th Ave, so a short walk full of shopping, people and food. Stop by Christie's to see art if you are in the city.

Room Tip: My room had a small table (kind of a living room dinning room combo). This was nice for NY.

We stayed there for 6 nights to enjoy Christmas in Manhattan. Let me share the good things first;

1. Location is very good if you intend to explore midtown Manhattan, and if you don't mind taking subway, Grand Central is practically at its basement. Besides trains going outside NYC, It's also got train #4, 5, 6 servicing uptown all the way to downtown Manhattan. We did use the subway to go to Mets, Central Park, Empire States, Soho, 9/11 Memorial, and Battery Park to catch a cruise at Hudson River. Easy and fast, no traffic jam. And there is indoor passage to the station which protect you from the cold. Times Square and Rockefeller Center are just several blocks away, within walking distance.
2. Many eateries at Grand Central station so very easy to get food.
3. Duane Reade is just a few steps away as well as AT&T and Verizon counter should you wish to get local sim card to maintain connections on all your gadgets.
4. Check in time is strictly at 4pm, we didn't get the room earlier (arrived at the hotel at around 2pm). We were lucky enough to get served at the Grand Club counter so we did not have to wait-up in long queue as in the normal check in counters. The officer was friendly and got us room 2527, corner executive king room facing lexington which is pretty much no view but spacious (~40-45sqm incl. tiny bathroom and a small walk in wardrobe) and quiet for NY standard.
5. The mattress is quite comfortable for us, not too firm, not too soft but you still get the waive if the other person rolls around which is not too good. Overall it is acceptable and we can sleep well.
6. We like the walk in wardrobe since we could just dump our stuff there, keep the big luggages and other mess inside the small walk in wardrobe. So we can keep the room tidy.
7. Service is generally good. The officers at Grand Club counters are all very helpful.

The cons;
1. Wifi is not free in the room, cost ~$17/24h slot, but it's free in the lobby which is probably partly the reason why the lobby is perpetually crowded (at least this is my husband's theory). We questioned this policy (no in-room free wifi) when we checked in, said that other hotels with the same standard provided in-room wifi for free nowadays. During our 6 nights stay, we bought 1 24h slot in-room wifi (since we got AT&T sim card for our phones) but the hotel waived the wifi cost when we checked out.
2. Room interior is not as nice as other Grand Hyatt hotels that we have stayed in before, looks a little rundown.
3. Also amenities is very basic. For example, no coffee or tea facilities in the room, no bathroom amenities such as cotton pads, cotton buds, shaver, toothbrush, toothpaste etc. they provided a so-so June Jacobs soap, shampoo and conditioner which we did not use.
4. Bathroom is freaking small for a spacious room, my guess it's only 2.5m x 2m at max if not less. No bathtub, only rain shower (well, at least there is rain shower).

After checking out, we had to leave our bags for a few hours before heading to JFK. They can watch the bags but it cost $3/bag. In other hotel, this service is usually provided for free.

Overall we think the hotel was ok due to great location, spacious room and service. But would be nice if the room itself could live up to Grand Hyatt standard (at least compare to Grand Hyatt in other cities we have stayed before).

Would we stay here again? Yeah probably but will also compare with other hotels in NY for better deals.

I was blown away by the level of service at such a large hotel. No attitude, just a clear focus on providing the best experience possible for the guest. Having a front desk manager as attentive and welcoming as Sebastian Gurevich made all the difference. Our family of five was treated like royalty and I truly appreciated the extra effort that the Sebastian and the whole staff made during our entire visit. I don't know how they manage to be so efficient at managing the hotel while maintaining a feeling of warmth. We were on a high floor, but never had to wait to long for an elevator. Or rooms were clean, comfortable, quiet and much larger than most Manhattan hotel rooms. It is definitely worth it to book a room with club access. The breakfast was great (including really good coffee...and I'm picky about that ) and we never felt hassled by the staff to hurry. Everyone always seemed to be in a good mood and it was contagious. During the week between Christmas and New Year's when the whole city was obviously filled to capacity, the fact that the whole staff maintained such a positive and zen attitude without any displays of impatience was especially noteworthy. Our fellow guests all seemed relaxed and content. The personnel sets the tone and can make or break a precious vacation. Being surrounded by surly hotel staff can really set a negative tone. Our experience with everyone at the Grand Hyatt NYC was nothing but positive. Special thanks to Sylvia at reception. People really make the difference. I would gladly stay here again.

This Hotel is very good in service, room, space, location. You have a CVS, Duane Reade almost there. Also, subway really closer.
Starbucks, restaurant, right in the middle of Manhattan.
The best option in town, definettely.

We stayed in this hotel for 7 nights in December. Excellent location for walking to Times Square and all the shops. Staff were very helpful. Deli bit pricy. Speed if check-in/check-out was very good. Located next door to Grand Central Station.
