“Great location”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

We just returned from our 4-night stay at the Grand Hyatt. We had a very quiet room on the 31st floor. Opening the window did let the sounds of NYC in, but with the windows closed, we had no problems with noise at all.

The location is great for public transportation out of Grand Central Station which was connected by a short indoor pedway. The location is also fantastic for access to the airporter buses from EWR or LGA. We found NYC a walking city.....and you can walk to tourist sights like the Empire State Building, Times Square and Rockefellar Center as the streets are all flat with no hills to climb, etc. If you don't want to see what's on the streets, then take the subway. Buy a metro card and up to 4 people can swipe and use the same card on any one trip which was excellent for our family of 4 ($2.50 per person per ride). Taxis are plentiful to flag down and aren't expensive either, relatively speaking. Unfortunately all hotels in Manhattan are expensive but there is value to being close to a subway station.

The hotel staff was very welcoming and helpful. They have special elevators for the upper floors and a huge lobby gathering area! Although coffee (but no tea) is complimentary, you need to call housekeeping daily to have it delivered to your room which was a little inconvenient. Having a safe in the room and the little fridge was nice!

There is a little marketplace off the lobby where you can pick up a quick bite to eat with lots of different options. There is also a market in Grand Central Station where you can pick up all kinds of fresh things from baking to teas to meat, and fruit! Lots of other eating places within a few blocks, too! Although Internet is not free, there is a computer in the lobby where you can checkin for your flights and print boarding passes without charge.

The beds were comfy (so wonderful after being so tired being a tourist) and although the room wasn't over spacious for 4, it was fine. I would choose this hotel again on any future visits.

Room Tip: Our room faced the Chrysler building and it was quiet with the windows closed.

Booked a club room, hotel is clean and in a great location. Check in was easy and room condition was good. I went to the Hyatt Club for breakfast this morning, needless to say the experience leaves me shaking my head. When will Hyatt start to teach customer service to employees in the club? I asked the girl at the club desk about a late check out and was told you needed to request that a check in and I needed to go to the front desk to ask. She was bust texting on her phone and could not simply pick up the phone to make a call. While this may seem petty, Hyatt needs to realize that loyalty to the brand matters, if it was not for the diamond and platinum members, who choose to stay frequently, the hotel would not be in business. It is time for them to learn customer retention 101... To the GM, this is being sent to Chicago Corporate offices as well...

I live in NYC so I rarely stay in a hotel in NYC. We were at a conference here, and decided to stay the night since seminar started pretty early. The room was just ok. It's clean and modern, what you will expected from a Hyatt. Nothing fancy though. I do wish that there's free wifi.

If you are looking to quickly drag your bag from Grand Central and be at your hotel, this is your spot. The hotel has a huge lobby. Check-in was reasonably swift. It's a large hotel, but we never had to wait long for an elevator.

The room was clean and quite spacious for a NYC hotel. It even has a small couch and table. This hotel is not for those seeking a boutique experience. You are just a number, but that's not to say the service wasn't good.

There's a gym, food on-site, and you are very close to all midtown attractions.

Stayed here with the family on several occasions and I must admit that the location of this establishment is simply fabulous. Walking distance to Broadway, next door to Grand Central Station and to the Apple Store... to name but those. Service can be somewhat impersonal but they do see lots of people on any given day. Breakfast is expensive and good but one can find a much better deal at the friendly diner across the street or at some spots inside Grand Central Station. Rooms have been well renovated and although they are not very large, they certainly are very comfortable. We will definitely be back since we believe the high price is well worth the fantastic location.

Fabulous stay at the Grand Hyatt. Great room on the club floor, excellent customer service and experience. This is my go to / first choice hotel for any visit to NYC. The lounge was enjoyable and the Concierge service knowledgeable and helpful. This hotel delivers on all fronts and is great when travelling solo or in company.

We arrived to find the room we had booked was not available so we were given a lower type room for 1 night but still got charged the same amount.
First negative impression:
We had asked for a roll-away bed for our 3-year-old daughter, which eventually was delivered after repeated efforts & several phone calls. Then, I had to call back housekeeping to ask them to send someone to put a down cover on it because it only had a very light and not-so-clean blanket. After a half hour the door knocks and a guy hands me a down cover (no sheets). I told him I asked for someone to make the bed and he told me I should call housekeeping. I did, we exchanged...pleasantries and eventually someone came and did it.
The next day, we were moved to the new room, which we were told would be "...about the same size but with a much bigger bathroom...".
Well..., the bathroom was actually smaller and when I say smaller, I mean SMALL..., airplane bathroom small... In fact, it was so small that you could be sitting on the toilet while washing your hands in the sink and soaking your feet in the shower!!!
A shower which was clogged (fixed the next day) AND a toilet bowl with a dark brown / black speck on it!!!
In the room, our bed was made with a light blanket that was smaller than the bed (!!!), the sheets & one of the pillowcases were dirty and the roll-away did NOT have a down cover despite all the back & forth from last night.
We called housekeeping, explained everything in extreme detail, asked additionally for 2 bathrobes & 2 pairs of slippers and asked them to take care of everything while we were out.
We came back about 1 hour later to find down covers on both beds (thumbs up guys!), the same dirty sheets on our bed (but new pillowcases), the speck still in the toilet bowl (eventually rinsed out after repeated efforts by us) AND 1 bathrobe & 1 pair of slippers. So, I had to call & ask again for the other set to be eventually delivered.
BTW, when we first arrived at this room, we noticed an ear plug on the floor right outside our door. Because of a similar experience some time ago in a hotel in San Fransisco (Hyatt at Fisherman's Wharf), we discussed it with my wife and made a mental note to check if & when it would be removed. It actually took them 3 days to remove it.
I won't even mention "minor" issues like the food quality at breakfast (which at the Grand Club was great), the amateur (albeit VERY polite) way staff deals with guests...
No, I will NOT do that..., instead, I'll go directly to day 7:
We came back to our room in the afternoon (we had left before it was serviced) only to find our toilet filled with a yellow liquid and an equally yellow stain on the toilet seat!!!
After repeated efforts, I got through to Max, the very polite "on-call housekeeping manager". He came over with a cleaning lady and tried to explain that the yellow liquid was probably the cleaning liquid they use although he said that "...for the stain, I have no explanation...".
He offered to move us to another room (we declined), we mentioned all the other cleaning-related issues with the hotel, he apologized repeatedly and left.
Now..., we didn't expect this incident to result in our whole stay becoming complimentary. However, we did expect someone to at least make an effort to show us they regret & feel bad about what happened and make an effort to make us feel like someone really cared & wanted to make sure we didn't leave totally unhappy..., NOTHING!!!
Not any kind of "monetary compensation", not a word of apology from anyone, not a note from the manager saying "...gee whiz guys, we're sorry we screwed up your stay. Please come back next time you're in NY and we'll make up for the negative experience...", NOTHING!!!
And we've been Hyatt Platinum Passport holders continuously for more than 10 years.
Anyway. bottom line is next time we're in New York, we're DEFINITELY NOT staying in the Grand Hyatt.
If you're a Hyatt fan, the Andaz is only a couple of blocks away, as is the 48 Lex and they CANNOT be as bad as the Grand Hyatt is!!!
