“Great location, good rooms, impersonal service”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

Undeniably great location, within walking distance to many Manhattan landmarks and a great base for a NYC shopping and sightseeing trip. Cabs easy to get even during peak periods and right next to Grand Central. Area is safe, we felt very safe walking (stumbling) back to the hotel late at night.

When you walk into the hotel you undoubtedly realise you are in a LARGE hotel - this is definitely a 'Grand' Hyatt (rather than a Park Hyatt or Hyatt Regency) - lobby has a very open floorplan and service is polite if not brisk and impersonal. Lifts are very busy but pretty speedy, so no complaints there. The trek from the lift to the room can be a hike, given the hotel size.

Rooms were very generously sized for midtown and on the 36th floor, no street noise and great views of the NYC concrete jungle! Decor of the rooms and comfort of the beds were exactly what you'd expect from a Hyatt hotel - i.e. solid, tasteful, and comfortable, if not grandiosely luxurious.

Stayed here for a week on a family vacation in January 2013 on Hyatt points, not sure if I would fork out cash for this place. This is undoubtedly a hotel that caters mostly to the business traveller.

Room Tip: Get a high floor away from the lift to avoid noise (even if it is a bit of a walk from the lift).

I don't know if this review is more about New York than the Hyatt but wow, what a noisy place. Our room looks out onto 42nd East and the trucks, cars and horns start about 2am and then gradually get worse. They reach a peek at about 7am where they become so unbearable you have to get up.
Hotel room is practical not luxurious, comments about towels are all true ( see other reviews) but so what?, we came to walk and shop not hang around in a bath robe all day.
Location is great, staff and service are great, the coffee shop in the lobby is perfect with friendly people.
In summary, if you have come for a luxury pampered break I'm not sure this would be the most appropriate hotel. If you have come for a good location and clean and tidy surroundings then this will do nicely.
Got to go.....there's a truck "horsing" something outside and I wanna watch !

First and foremost this hotel is in the very best location to explore everything Manhattan has to offer. All areas are clean and bright and our room was reasonably spacious and very comfortable. We did experience a problem on our first night when the pre booked bed for our daughter failed to materialise but we were promptly moved the following day to a room with enough beds and compensated for our inconvenience. All the staff that I came into contact with were attentive and helpful. Although expensive the hotel breakfast could not be faulted and was the best we had during our stay. Alternatives for breakfast include Pershing Square (opposite under bridge), Blooms on Lexington & Bagel Express.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the elevators.

I was at the Grand Hyatt NY for a business meeting this month. I hadn't been in the hotel in a couple of year and wow....it has been completely redone. The lobby area is very modern (and a bit confusing) but look for the check-in desks against the back wall when you come in. The rooms are very well done - clean, fully updated with good work lighting and easy general lighting. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept in and the bathroom was modern but extremely functional. Floors are nice and the location is perfect. As a business traveler, it is a perfect location at Grand Central Terminal on Lexington Ave so it is very easy to get around.

Most importantly, the staff was very helpful, friendly and available for any questions or concerns. I was very impressed with the hotel and it was very comfortable stay.

Room Tip: If you are on the upper floors, the elevators can get busy. Take the lower floor elevator to the 14...

As a Platinum-level Gold Passport holder, I see a lot of Hyatts, so I was excited to reserve a room for three days at the Grand Hyatt. Generally when you achieve Platinum, you're given free wifi access, a newspaper of your choice every morning, are able to reserve a better room (or at least one that falls more in line with your preferences on the Gold Passport site). And the front desk generally does a great job of valuing your regular patronage.

Except at the Grand Hyatt New York.

The front desk "upgraded" me to a room next to the elevator and stairwells.

The poorly cleaned shower had mold and someone's splattered shampoo on the walls.

Took about ten minutes of running the shower each day before the hot water made it to my floor.

The shower drain regularly backed up and filled the shower area with graywater.

Half the lights in the room didn't work - and the bedside lamp was broken.

I slept late one morning, hanging out the Do Not Disturb sign - only to have Housekeeping knock at the door and wake me up anyway.

Got a morning newspaper the first day, but none thereafter.

No typical "how was your stay?" from the front desk when I checked out.

Now, I know this is an older property - and in the "grand" scheme of things (pun intended), these aren't big deals. But when you tally them all up, it's far below the experience I've received from other Hyatt hotels - even Hyatt Places.

Won't stay here again. Next trip will be either the 48 Lex or some other chain.

This was the perfect place for my wife and me to stay when we were in New York recently, celebrating our first anniversary. We got in late on a Friday evening but still were able to get something to eat for a late dinner. The hotel is right nextdoor to Grand Central Station, with easy access to the subway system. It was a short cab ride away from the Broadway show we had come to attend. And the cost was reasonable, considering that it was, after all, in the heart of Manhattan.

Room Tip: Get a room on a high floor for the best view.

Overall this is a nice hotel in a great location. However aside from being greeted when reaching the top of the escalators which was nice in a large lobby the other times i encountered service needs the results were less than stellar.
