“easy access from JFK”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2011

I'm writing to thank a past reviewer (October 10, 2010) who took the time to write out explicit directions to the Edison from JFK via the Air Train and subway. His directions saved us a fortune in time and $$$.
We followed his directions exactly. Because we're from New Zealand -- total population 4
million -- we're not use to modern transport systems. We haven't got them. They can be a bit daunting. BIG THANK YOU TO THAT REVIEWER.

We were in New York for four nights from July 10 and the location of the Edison is hard to beat. However our room left a lot to be desired.

We were on the 6th or 7th floor and I can only conclude from the many reviews that things are better on the higher floors. Our room was shabby-depressing. There was a heat wave on in New York and the old air conditioner wasn't up to the job.
There was a constant whiff of toilet and no matter how diligently the maid cleaned the bathroom there was just not adequate ventilation . . . the bathroom was very old and decrepit . . . poorly ventilated.

Our first contact with front desk was not good. We had a young woman who seemed to be
world-weary . . . defeated by life. She just did not want to be bothered with us.
However there was a great concierge who put us onto a corner cafe/ breakfast place --
out the back door and turn right a couple of blocks --Galaxy Diner. Ignore the hostess at the Galaxy -- another sourpuss -- embittered by life.
. . . What is it with these young, beautiful New York women? Would it hurt them so much to smile occasionally?

We ended up at the Edison because our NZ travel agent put us there. NEXT TIME I'LL DO MY HOMEWORK. I FEEL CERTAIN WE CAN DO BETTER IN THE TIMES SQUARE VICINITY.

Room Tip: From Trip Advisor reports, I get the feeling work has been done to upgrade rooms on the upper floors...

Our room on the 11th floor had comfortable beds, a fridge, and lots of fluffy towels each day. Combined with a location on Times Square and close to restaurants and theatres, what else does one need for a great New York City experience......

We have stayed at this hotel before and loved it,yes the rooms are a little bit small but who wants to stay in their room all the time.We came to see New York and the location of this hotel helped that in every way. The concierge booked us amazing tickets for a Rangers game the deli next door was great. All in all we loved it so much we are coming back on feb 25 2012 , I love this hotel and cannot wait to go back, see you soon Edison!!!

new york accomodation can be very expensive and this hotel is an exception to this.for the price we paid we got exactly what we needed.a clean bed,(no bed bugs) toilet-fair enough they are fairly small bathrooms but very clean and always plenty of fluffy white towels and nice toiletries.the staff were extremely helpful and if you were stood there only 10 seconds the reception staff would say "i'll be with you in a minute sir/miss" which we thought was very professional.we went with the intention of actually seeing all we could of new york and just needed somewhere clean, cheap and close to times square and thats exactly what we got.the rum house downstairs is also great to have a drink and have nightly entertainment...thumbs up to the edison !!!

Room Tip: try to get a high room,we didn't and had a not so good view!!

Our experience with this hotel is not so god.
Some of the personell at the baggage store room were rude, stressed and unkind.
One person in the concierge desk gave us wrong adres to a ishockey match, wrong stadium, and the same guy also gave us wrong information when we ordered a helicopter tour. It is not fun to use valuable holiday time in New York travelling to a closed ishockeystadium in stead of watching a preseason ishockeygame.
One of the ladies at the booking desk was unkind and unwilling to upgrade one of our rooms. We asked when booking these rooms that we wanted separate beds in one of the rooms. We wanted to swith from one small "grandlit" bed to separate beds for our adult kids. That was NOT possible, but at least we got a room with enough space to place a rollerbed, so the brother and sister did not need to share the same bed and bed-sheets!
The Edison Cafe is a rather sad cafe.... The day we visited the cafe they had the health authorities on visit. That visit resulted in many courses not allowed to serve. And that they told us after waiting aprox 30 min for the food.
The only positive with this hotel must be the location. aprox 100 yards from Times Square is brilliant. Many nice restaurants in near neighbourhood as well.

The Edison is located near the corner of W47 street and Broadway, a fantastic spot for theater going. We had suite 1719 which has a large living room and separate king bedroom . Each has a flat screen television. Tiny, tiny bathroom was only drawback other than no in- room safe or WiFi. Plenty of closet space. A wonderful deli-cafe for breakfast can be entered through the lobby. We ate breakfast here every day. A small grocery is just outside the entrance. A small refrigerator was given at no charge. Hotel cost us $1700 for 4 days in the suite which is VERY low priced for this area in NYC.It's cheaper other times of the year. Would certainly stay again. The suite has been restored beautifully.

Room Tip: Suites in the "19" row are large and quiet

We really loved the 1920 Art Deco the rooms where smaller than some new hotel, but so was the price. The beds were clean and the towels clean and fluffy, there was no noise to say how close you are to Time Square. The staff were friendly and helpful, I would use this hotel again and recommend it to clients.
