We spent 3 nights at this wonderful, unique, small but beautifully run hotel.
The service was exemplary.
The staff were courteous, attentive and friendly.
Nothing was too much trouble.
Old fashioned style (if only other hotels would copy this).
The lift attendants wore white gloves
The flower arrangements were superp.
The restaurants were fabulous,
The bar was atmospheric with a great pianist.
We experienced an utterly pleasurable stay.

Quite simply, there isn't a better hotel in New York if you're looking for old-world elegance and charm.

The rooms are spacious and adorned with elegance. The beds are top-notch with some of the finest quality linens I have slept on at a hotel. The bathroom showers are fantastic with massive tubs for those who like to soak. The TV is the "real thing"--meaning you get a cable box with full Time-Warner cable, not 15 pre-determined stations.

The restaurant has some of the best dover sole anywhere in New York and you should check out the Cafe Carlyle on Monday's to hear Woody Allen play the clarinet.

All in all, this hotel is fantastic. Keep in mind that it is certainly not "cheap." I would not classify it as a "value" establishment. But you don't only pay for a great room, you never know who you'll spot in the lobby or elevator!

We had a wonderfule experience from the moment we checked in until we checked out.
The room was ver spacious and clean. Filled with Kiehl products. Our tub/shower seemed a littl tires and the bed was very firm, not the kind you fall into and dont want to leave. Other than that, no complaints at all. We were upgraded to a higher floor, and our room had beautiful views and truly was spacious, with a very large walk in closet and main area. We were celebrating a special occasion, and they had a sepcial dessert in the room waiting for us which was a nice touch. We had drinks downstairs before heading out for sinner. We truly could have stayed their all night...what a true New York experience. We had massages at their spa, which was great, the changing rooms were nothing special, but the treatment rooms were lovely. We had brunch the following day and the service, food and ambience was top notch. They certainly made sure our weekend was so special!

The hotel is run in the old traditions - there are elevator operators even though the elevators have buttons - they tend to not have enough operators at peak times resulting in longer waits which I found unacceptable - the elevator operator is a nice touch, but not when it means waiting in the lobby for a long time just to get an elevator car.

Room service is reasonable in this hotel though we found that the requests made were not handled correctly - however, we did not tell them of the mistakes so they had no opportunity to correct the mistakes.

While we were there someone left a package on the street about a block away. The police shut the street down to investigate - not an uncommon reaction in NYC today. The hotel management was good enough to find out what was causing the commotion so we could adjust our plans.

This is a great hotel, well located, steeped in history, art, and style. Insist on an updated room because the older ones can have scratched up furniture and less that pristine carpets. The service is great; the food is delicious; the jazz bar terrific, BUT a large percentage of the rooms are residences so it cannot be a non-smoking hotel and that is evident in the air. The first room we were given (and they got the reservation completely confused) was smokey (actually there were two men in suits in the bathroom of that particular room when we entered which was awkward at best) BUT even in the updated room that had a balcony with cigarette butts on it, you could feel smoke in the air. Asthmatics, beware. Others might very well enjoy.

I have just come back from my first visit to New York, and was recommended the Carlyle Hotel to stay in by a friend. Wow - this hotel is simply incredible. I have stayed in many 5 star hotels in my time - but i do not think i will ever stay in a better Hotel than this one in my lifetime. From the moment our car arrived at the entrance, the staff were wonderful, the hotel itself is the highest form of class and style - and it does this, without any hint of snobbery or class distinction. Our room had the most amazing view of NY and central Park, and was beautifully appointed in every way. As it was our wedding anniversary - they even sent us a cake with a congratulations message on it, and i will never forget the most amazing night in Bemmelmens Bar - looking at the fabulous Murals and listening to wonderful music.
Thank you for the most amazing stay - we will never forget it.
