“Good location and service”

The hotel is perfectly located in the middle of Greenwich village, around the corner from a wonderfull lively park and NYU. Helpfull staff. Breakfast is included in the room price, coffee, orange juice, choice of bread/bagels/pastries, fresh fruit. Interior looks better on the pictures than in reality. Corridors are old fashioned, but the room was refurbished, clean and quiet. Subway around the corner.

I have stayed at this hotel on previous visits to NYC and love it. A classic art deco hotel, with pleasant lobby, friendly helpful Desk staff - and of course Ronnie the Bellman - lounge area and a superb restaurant. A really excellent breakfast is included in the room price - coffee, orange juice, choice of bread/bagels/pastries, fresh fruit and cereal included; if you wish to have a cooked breakfast, there is a menu and it costs extra. Evening meal in the North Side Cafe, whilst beautifully cooked, is quite pricey and you can find far cheaper alternatives around the Washington Square area if you don't want to move far. Lunch in the North Side is also available.

Rooms are not large but certainly adequate, with spotlessly clean bathroom, large comfortable beds, a desk area, ironing board and iron, in-room safe, use of umbrella and robes.

There is a fitness center but no pool.

Washington Square is in the University district and the Square itself rocks in the evening. The surrounding streets have gone down in the past few years and don't smell too pleasant, due to the large number of homeless people on the street. But it is still one of the most pleasant places to stay in nyc and I would come back again.

Room Tip: If you value a good night's sleep, one of the higher rooms at the back is a good choice. If you...

We decided to try this hotel at the recommendation from a family member who's stayed there several times and liked it. At the time we booked the rates seemed to be relatively reasonable ($286/night before 15% taxes - including continental breakfast – kind of an acceptable mid-range price for NYC hotels). Location was certainly convenient, at the leafy northwest corner of Washington Square and a couple blocks to the subway. Check in was smooth and the staff was courteous and efficient, also mindful of our request for a higher floor (standard superior rooms have no view so higher up is a way to get more natural light). We looked at a lower floor room as at first the higher floor one was not quite ready - it was on the 3rd floor facing a wall - so waited a bit and had 809, looking out on plenty of sky and very quiet even with the window open all night. Room's not big but contemporary and clean, tastefully decorated with a retro flair, and comes with the expected amenities: coffee/tea maker, hair dryer, iron, and safe. Bathroom's long and narrow, white tiles, with a window opening onto an airshaft. The sliding closet doors are mirrored giving the room a more spacious feel. The queen bed felt a bit small, but firm enough with comfortable bedding and pillows. The included continental breakfast in the cute hotel restaurant North Square was simple but adequate (you can order hot items for $8-$10). Overall, a very nice small hotel and we had a pleasant stay (by the way the free wi-fi also worked very well). Elsewhere a similar room probably would cost half as much but for NYC have to consider this a very good find and will absolutely recommend it.

Returning frequently to New York, this is the place I chose. Ask for a room on the higher floors in order to avoid garbage truck noise in the early AM hours and you will enjoy the rest; friendly staff always ready for a joke and available to help, walking distance to everything downtown. Kind of feels like a neighborhood hotel if such a thing exists....

If there are any parents with New York University students for kids, then this is the hotel for you. It won't break the budget (by NYC standards), it's really close to NYU, and everyone is so friendly with welcoming advice, that you will feel comforted and sane. Of course, this hotel is also good for every body else! It's what hotels used to be like in "the old days" when people cared and there was real personal attention. Maybe because it is small and it isn't a chain, and it's been around for a very long time, but I would always choose to stay here. Our room was rather small, but apart from that, we couldn't fault our experience. It is quaint, characterful, and in a wonderful location.

Room Tip: Our room was facing an inner courtyard/well. It made our room feel dark and claustrophobic.

This place is great value in a very expensive city. The location is excellent, the rooms are nice, beds comfortable, the place is clean and the staff are really fantastic. I will definitely come back again.

I have been to NYC many times and stayed at many different hotels. This trip, September 2013, I stayed at the WSH for the first time. What a great experience! Friendly and extremely helpful staff (the woman who cleans the rooms even asked me what time I would like my room made up). The location is wonderful - right by Washington Square Park as well as 6th Avenue and 8th Street in the heart of Greenwich Village, right by a major subway stop with multiple train lines, lots of restaurants and stores (including two 24/7 drug stores just steps from the hotel and health food markets within 2 blocks). My room (one of the larger ones - room 802) was LARGE, quiet, fully equipped and beautifully Deco - desk, vanity, Keurig coffee maker, hair blower, iron and board, in-room safe, great bathroom amenities, large comfortable bed, 2 in-room air conditioners, huge walk-in shower, double sinks, a view, lots of "walking around room." The hotel is clean, bug-free and feels "new" rather than "old." I am so glad I stayed here. Their restaurant is very good, the complimentary breakfast is wonderful, and if you have a glass of wine or a drink in the bar you will be treated to the wonderful people who work in the bar and are very interesting and intelligent. This hotel is truly a gem.

Room Tip: try to get a room with a view of some sort.
