“Perfect Location Across From Our Favorite Park!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

Washington Square Hotel in the heart of Greenwich Village, to us, is the perfect perfect location.

Here's why; it's steps from the subway (so convenient), it's located literally across the street from our favorite New York City Park (Washington Square Park), it sits on a quiet tree-lined street amongst wonderful brownstones and typical NYC stoops like you see in the movies, it's minutes from so many fabulous restaurants and shops, and it gives you the feel of living with the locals, right in the HEART of Greenwich Village.

The hotel itself has so much history, so typical of the Greenwich Village boho stories that make this area so fascinating. It's a small family owned hotel, decorated in an Art Deco style. We've always stayed in the large double deluxe (2 queen beds). They only have a few of these rooms, but they are well worth the upgrade. Very very roomy with charming street views. Some of the other rooms are small so I'd advise to ask for a street view or the Double Deluxe for an open, lighter room.

One of my favorite things about this hotel is the location to Washington Square Park. Possibly one of my single most reasons for visiting New York City is this park. The hotel offers a continental breakfast with small containers, where you can pack up, and take across the street, to sit in the park and enjoy your breakfast, while you watch the park come to life. The locals walking their dogs, reading the paper, doing yoga - to me, it's the perfect location for this park lover.

The beds at Washington Square Hotel are ultra comfortable, the staff always so nice, especially the doorman. Duane Reed drug store is around the corner for any incidentals you may have forgotten. The Waverly Restaurant is one block away and we love their breakfast (NY diner style).

If anyone is a fan of IFC (International Film) their movie theater is just up the street where you can see all the wonderful up-to-date independent & foreign films.

Just down MacDougal street, are numerous bars/restaurants that come to life at night. The famous Cafe Wha? along with other great places. One of our favorites is the Olive Tree Cafe (see my review).

If you want to be right in the middle of what Greenwich Village is all about, and you love the activities and street entertainment and people watching of Washington Square Park, then this is the perfect hotel.

It's in a very safe neighborhood, I didn't hesitate to let my daughter and her friend (19) walk around and shop and have lunch on their own.

We will continue to choose Washington Square Hotel when we want our Greenwich Village Fix!

In general the hotel is nice. The location could not be better. But be sure to ask for a room that has a window to the exterior and not just to the interior shaft. Also check the room to make sure that the temperature is suitable. Some of the rooms (515 for instance) are like a sauna in the winter even if you open the window and turn off the radiator.

Room Tip: be sure to ask for a room that has a window to the exterior and not just to the interior shaft. Also...

My friends and I always stay at the Washington square hotel when in New York. We love it.
Very friendly staff in this Art deco hotel. Nice comfortable rooms decorated in the Art deco style with excellent beds. A small bar just off the lobby which does a very lovely iced tea. We like it because its in Greenwich village, with all it's lovely small boutique shops, where you can get some really good buys, as well as a variety of small bars and eatery's. It's within walking distance to the Blue note jazz club, where we always go for New year's eve when in New York. Although you can go anytime of year. Easy to get a cab straight from the front door up to Manhattan for the big shops and attractions.

Room Tip: We have stayed 3 times and had different rooms each time. They were all good, some bigger than other...

My wife and I stayed for four nights in February to celebrate my 50th birthday and the courtesy and friendliness of the staff was a key factor in making it such a great trip, especially concierge Ronnie who is a real asset - from his warm greeting every morning to his top tips on off the beaten path places to see and eat.
Great breakfasts, internet access in the lobby for those who dont go on holiday with their gizmos.
Rooms small by US standards but hey, who goes to New York to spend time in a hotel room. Big enough, well appointed and most importantly very clean - the fabulous view of the park was a bonus.
Location in the Village is great with access to subway at end of the street.
Also great value for Manhattan.
Couldn't fault it in any way and if we are lucky enough to visit New York again I wont be looking anywhere else.

We stayed at the hotel for a few days in September. The Village is my favorite area in New York City, and the hotel couldn't be more ideally located - right next to the lively Washington Square Park! The hotel is old and has a lot of history, which makes it very charming.

The rooms are small, but since we only use the room for sleeping, this was really not an issue. However, the rooms (both the room itself and the bathroom) could have been cleaner, and it seemed that the housekeeping had really cut some corners there. I understand that there is only a limited amount of time to clean every room, but it is the management's responsibility to ensure that the cleaners can do their job properly. There was hair (!) in the bathroom, and the room itself was generally not too clean, either. For this reason, I am not too happy to stay at this hotel again.

Other than the cleaning issue - which, to me, is the biggest issue when choosing a hotel room - the hotel was fine. Breakfast was included in the room price, which is rare in NYC. The breakfast is basic, but perfectly fine to start the day.

The staff was varying - some members were really friendly and helpful, while others seemed rather annoyed when guests came to disturb their chit-chat. Generally, however, the service was okay.

I would recommend this hotel for the location. If more attention was paid to cleaning of the rooms, I would definitely stay here again. I also appreciated it that they used duvet covers (changed after guests) instead of cover sheets in the beds.

Spent one night at the Washington Square Hotel, and the only complaint is that one night is not enough! We were upgraded to an Executive King room, and it was huge! The room has been nicely updated and plenty of electrical outlets in convenient locations - quite a surprise from a building of its age! The bathroom was immaculate, and very modern. The doorman is outstanding, very approachable and a font of information on the neighborhood, and New York City as a whole. The hotel is located near many great restaurants and the university. Breakfast at the North Square Restaurant was very enjoyable. We thought the stay was a great value for the money.

Very nice rooms, more Euro in size. Remodeled hotel is very nice, quiet and very convenient to not only locations in the Village but easy to access mid-town as well. Very good small, intimate restaurant with an excellent chef.

Room Tip: choose a queen size bed at a minimum.
