This is a place I will return! My first trip to NYC. I loved it! The people that work there are outstanding and very helpful. So very clean. The shared bath, you never had to wait and was very clean. The location was safe, and close to subway, dining, and just walking. I had to take my daughter to NYU with many suitcases and they were helpful with a driver. (With an expected rate to pay driver!) I have never written a review before, but felt compelled to write one for this hotel. AWESOME.

Quaint street location with trees and brownstone buildings.

It was indeed small but we expected it for the price in NYC. It was in a great location close to Union Square and lots of places. There was lots of parking around. You have 2 bathrooms for half a floor of like 8-12 people but aside from one morning it wasn't too busy. The bathrooms were very clean and the room was very clean. You have a small 30ish inch flatscreen HDMI TV also. I'd recommend the 2 twin beds over one queen, you get a lot more space. Great for younger people looking to stay in NYC for a few nights. Airconditioner for each room which you can adjust as you please, it worked well. I liked the atmosphere of that old school hotel and the old elevators ran well. Very fun place.

Room Tip: Pick a two twin bed room. Corner rooms are smaller.

This was a basic hotel inside an old building which gave it a nice feel. The workers are friendly and keep the place well kept. If you're traveling in a budget look here it's also in a great location! While there make sure to try the local diner and enjoy union square!

I stayed here for four days and it was ok. My room was small but it was across from the bathroom so that was a benefit. The location was great both in terms of reaching shopping areas and to and from the airport. I would recommend here for someone on a shoe string budget who wants to experience New York City.

Room Tip: choose a room close to the bathroom for easy access.

Great location. Otherwise rather unimpressive establishment.

Loo down the hall. Bed is way to soft for two people to sleep comfortably, think of a bouncy castle and you get the picture. No rolling shutters and very flimsy blinds.

All in all a bit pricy for what it is at $150 a night, but that's NY for you.

Room Tip: There are smoking and non-smoking rooms. They don't bother to ask you which you prefer, so be su...

If you are comfortable with shared restrooms, a smallish room, and either a slow elevator or a winding staircase, then you will no doubt have the mindset to be quite content with the relative bargain and location. The walk to subway, bagels, and farmers' market was just fine. We came to NY to squeeze a couple of Lonely Planet days into each of our days, the room just being to sleep between them. We would totally stay here again for as long as our daughter would be happy to share a room with us.

Hotel 17 is a great choice if you are staying with friends for a few days. Shared bathroom and simple rooms, but the location is great, close to everything. And very cheap compared to other hotels in the city.
