DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel New York City - Times Square
Ranked #185 of 469 Hotels in New York City
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 3, 2013

Right at Times Square across from TKTS booth/stairs. Can't beat the location. As the name suggests, rooms are 2 room suites. Good for families as kids can sleep in quiet in their own room. Rooms are in excellent shape - carpet is clean, furniture is clean, beds are comfortable, lots of pillows, towels are ample and soft, bath tub is clean, lots of counter space in washroom, AC worked well, 2 HD TVs, lots of lighting. Room has mini fridge. Windows open a little if you need air or want to take a photo. There are about 3 rooms/floor that face Times Sq, rest face north or south. Despite being so close to Times Square the rooms are quiet. Security is good as well - need to show room key to enter.
Breakfast is very good - hot/cold - omelette/french toast/pancake/waffle station, ample fruits, breads, pastries. Best value in Times Square.

Room Tip: rooms by elevators face Times Sq.

There were some good aspects to this hotel, but also some disappoitments. The location was perfect. It was close to everything we needed with a great view. The hotel room was like a small inlaw apartment, so it worked well in terms of space with a family. The king bed was comfortable, the sofa bed not so good, but that's to be expected I guess. The microwave and fridge were really useful, even though the milk still went sour in the fridge. It just didn't seem to get cold. The staff were very helpful and even provided late checkout. However, when we checked-in for 3:00, the room wasn't ready until 3:45 and we were there since 12:00, so we were tired. The cookies are a nice touch, but they didn't make up for the late check in. An early check-in (as requested by phone, and email) would have been better. We paid extra for a higher floor (25-45) and got on the 27th which still didn't drown out the noise from the street. The bartender, Justin at the Blue Moon was especially nice to my son and introduced him to a Roy Rogers. :) The bell hops, concierge staff were all great. However, I was disappointed with the room. It was tired looking and in need of some updating and cleaning. Even the light fixure was rusty...from reading other reviews I had expected this...but I didn't expect the cleanliness to fall short. Some things were done, like providing clean towels and amenities and the bed was made and the room was vaccumed once and the tub was cleaned, but some other things weren't done such as providing clean glasses, sweeping the bathroom floor (there was hair on floor that wasn't ours - yuk!), wiping the counters, as well the minibar wasn't filled...maybe these were considered extras...Overall the room didn't feel clean. I even left a tip as an incentive for extra service. However, it didn't work as it it had for other hotels. I don't mean to sound picky, but cleaniness and freshness is important and the level provided would be fine for a 3 star hotel with a price to match, but with the room costing over $400.00 a night I expected more. If the house keeping had been a 5...I would have overlooked the dinginess of the decor. Oh well...at least there weren't any bed bugs :).

PROS - The location of the Hotel was in the middle of Times Square. ALL the attractions was within walking distance. New York City isn't as rough as people make it out to be, just do the main attractions like Circle Line, Top of the Rock, Empire state building. Walking around the city is a better choice to experience the real NY. I also recommend going to 230 5th Avenue rooftop for brunch on Saturday and Sunday when they allow minors.

CONS - Living room was too small

This hotel is advertised as a 4 start hotel. I believe its more of a 3 start hotel.

Positives:
Great location (if you want to be in the heart of NYC)

Negatives:
The room décor was dated.
Not enough lifts in the hotel - lengthy wait for lift at times. Waited 25 mins once. it was too hot in the stair well to walk down the 25 slights of stairs.

Three of us, girls trip to the big city, shared a corner suite with a 180-degree view of Times Square. Our cab driver had to point out the hotel entrance through the crowded sidewalk and scaffolding but once through the doors we were warmly greeted and put on an elevator up to the main lobby. The hotel staff made us very welcome throughout our 4 night stay starting with the warm cookies, making change for a large bill, help with theater tickets... Room was fine, interesting view through dirty windows. Did not try the food in the hotel. One concierge and one bellman were less than helpful regarding info on trip back to airport, but other than that no complaints, only praise. Easy walk to theater district, subway stops. Bed very comfortable. Plenty of storage, except for the bathroom where there was a lack of under-sink cabinet space.
