“A real gem of an apartment hotel located in Upper Westside”
Reviewed November 1, 2009

We stayed for seven nights in a one room apartment. It was quiet, the staff courteous and location excellent. The subway was 1 minute from the hotel. If you want to save money to spend on sightseeing, you can prepare the daily meals here. The best deli and fresh food market in NYC is directly opposite. Although the kitchenette facilities were fairly basic, we were able to buy semi-prepared food at the deli to reheat and add a sparkling fresh salad and a dessert treat for a great evening meal. Cereal and fresh fruit for breakfast, we made a bread roll with salad to take out with us sightseeing had us spending just US$25 a day for two. How good is that! Best tip: A slice of NY cheesecake for $1.99 at Fairways market opposite.
There is a huge laundry on the 7th floor, wash and dry for $3.50.
The saving on meal costs certainly helped offset the accommodation bill.
The only negative comment (which we didn't bring up with the front desk) a small table and two chairs to dine at (this is in the one room apartment) would make it easier than us trying to eat sitting at the desk on one chair and a stool.
Oh, the kingsize bed was a dream to sleep in.
We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to our Aussie friends.

The Beacon-Hotel is well located on Broadway, NY nearby a metrostation, Central Park, restaurants and shops.
The rooms are accomodated very well with a luxurious bed, a closet (with an iron and an ironing board), a small kitchen and a small bathroom, which are all very clean.
We had a problem with some lights in the room and they fixed it right away.
We really loved the hotel and our whole stay there!

Our family spent 5 nights at the Beacon October 8-13, our 3rd stay there since 2004. The rooms and lobby of this older style hotel are now renovated and are just another bonus to this welcoming gem on the Upper West Side. We always request a higher floor 1 bedroom suite overlooking Broadway, as these rooms are generally quieter with a nice aspect of the beautiful Ansonia Building across the road and the activity of New York.
This time we were given a room on the 8th floor, the lowest we have ever been. Surprisingly, the room was so quiet, at night I literally could have heard a pin drop on the carpet. We had 2 double beds and a pullout sofa. The pullout had a very thin and uncomfortable mattress but was adequate for a small child. The kitchenette is very compact and handy and the full-size fridge was great.
Below on the 7th floor is the roomy laundry, with front loaders, dryers, snack and detergent vending machines. All loads are $2 and change is available at the front desk..
The Beacon is a brief stroll to the 72nd subway, reaching Times Square in only minutes. It is close to restaurants, opposite the enormous 24 hour Fairway Market (groceries, expansive deli, ready to heat meals) and a 10 minute walk to Central Park. It is a safe, friendly neighbourhood and a place we would highly recommend. We paid $295/night(plus tax) for a spacious self-contained apartment in NYC - what more could you ask?!
We look forward to returning. Thank you, Hotel Beacon.

Stayed at the beacon hotel for 3 days during April. The room we stayed in was great. Newly renovated on the top floor with great views straight out to central park and could even see to the north and south of the city as well. Had everything we needed and even a grocery store and gourmet deli across the road as well as a bottle shop downstairs. the staff were really friendly and helpful whenever needed. 5min walk to central park and subway. perfect location. definately going back there when my family comes back to new york for christmas next year!

My family has stayed at the Beacon many times since we discovered it 15 years ago. It's in a very nice neighborhood (Broadway and 74th). There's a subway stop almost at the door, and dozens of good restaurants and shops within walking distance. The staff is consistently outstanding. The hotel sometimes shows its age with a little wear and tear in the rooms. But, it's always clean and never less than acceptable. The prices have crept up over the years, but it's still a good deal. We almost always get a 1-bedroom suite, and it's usually less than $250. Unless you insist on the top of the line elegance, you can't go wrong with this place. A cost cutting tip for out of town travelers with a car: There is plenty of safe, free residential neighborhood parking within a few blocks of the hotel, so you don’t have to pay for a garage. Just cruise the neighborhoods from about 71st to 78th between Central Park West and Riverside and watch the signs for No Parking days. I’ve never failed to find a spot by investing 15 or 20 minutes in it, and I’ve never had trouble leaving my car on the street.

The Beacon was a sensational place to stay. The location was superb and proximity to the subway made getting around NYC a breeze! The hotel was clean the furnishings were good quality and working. My wife and 10 month old stayed in a King suite on level 7, it was spacious and exaclty like what was on the web (no nasty surprises like we've previously had). The kitchenette was small but functional, with a limited range of utensils, but we made it work. It was a lovely stroll to Central Park. Heaps of restaurant/diner options and the deli across the road had a great variety should you choose a night in or to do your own breakfast etc. We will be back!

The beacon is a beautiful hotel located in REAL NYC. its 2 blocks from a sub way and a few blocks from the natural history museum and central park. this is the second time we've stayed here. Loved it the first time round and had no complaints at all. However this time round we had a room at the back of the hotel with a huge vent running up along the side of the room near a window, loud was not the word for it. but they did move us the next morning once it was said to them we were also upgraded to a suit from the minute we arrived as were the other couple we travelled with. rooms are clean and spacious. the bathrooms are a little dark. possibly a bit pricey for what u get but the location is fantastic. for the most part the staff are nice. but its new york to get any real joy its all about tipping them.
