My adult daughter and I stayed four nights at the Hotel Beacon on the upper west side of Manahattan in Sept. 2009. Can't say enough about the courtesy, professionalism, and attentiveness of the staff. Everyone we encountered, from the young man who greeted us at the curb on our arrival, to the front desk attendant, to the concierge, to the housekeeping staff--everyone was friendly, helpful, and just plain nice. We've been to NYC before (my daughter stayed at the Beacon several years ago and was particularly impressed with its total renovation), and we've always had wonderful experiences. The Beacon is a standout because of the great staff and the terrific location. We really enjoyed staying in a "neighborhood" (the upper West side) instead of in a "tourist" area. It was fun to walk around and find a little coffee shop, watching regular people going about their daily lives. It was so easy to hop on the subway and get wherever we wanted to go in minutes. AND, it's a couple of blocks from Central Park!! What could be better? The Beacon is especially good for families b/c the rooms are quite spacious (by NYC standards) and each has its own kitchenette. My daughter and I enjoyed the kitchenette as well, for morning coffee or late night dessert. All in all, this is a great place to stay in NYC--and the price can't be beat. P.S. There are tons of great restaurants in the area. Although the hotel does not have its own restaurant, there is a cafe next door--Viand, I think is the name--that is friendly, has good food, and is very reasonable. Great for breakfast and for families.

I would normally have given this hotel five stars but it was just edged by another in New York I stayed at in August. The Beacon has got to be near the top of the list for anyone wanting to stay on the Upper West Side. So close to so many great attractions, and the Fairway across the road is perfect if you get a room like we did with a kitchenette. Roomy and perfect for families, with excellent staff.

We've stayed at the Beacon on three occasions, and we'll keep coming back. It has large, spacious, well maintained rooms with kitchenettes - at a great price. The location is perfect - about a thirty minute walk from Times Square, and near restaurants, shopping and the theatre.

We had a 2 bedroom Suite at the Beacon from September 4th to 14th and all I can say is wow!

Firstly the price was fantastic, so much cheaper than equivalent but lesser quality hotels in the city

Check-in was a breeze, we were on our way to room 906 in less that 5 minutes

The room was HUGE, 2 bedrooms (2 doubles in 1 and a king in the other), 2 bathrooms (1 with and 1 without a bathtub), a living room area with pull out sofa bed (actually fairly comfortable) and a full kitchen

At nights the was very little outside noise meaning a good nights sleep was possible (rare in New York I know)

Any problems we had with the room (we had a couple of tiny ones) were sorted almost instantly and the maid left the rooms spotless everyday

We had already decided to cancel plans for a trip to Australia next year to return to New York (for the 7th time) and we will be definitely stayin at the Beacon again

In fact we stopped just short of booking before we left

In summary, great hotel, great staff, (really) great location

Many thanks and see you in May

Matthew

We stayed in a standard room - large for New York, with very basic kitchenette and small but functional bathroom. The room was well maintained, offered a lot of storage space, good air con, lots of natural light. Modern, comfortable furnishings. Huge and really comfy king plus bed. Good lights, desk, bedside table. Kitchenette had two very, very slow to heat rings with traditional hob kettle - it took 25 minutes to heat ehough water for a cup of tea - not so good! An electric kettle would have made things almost perfect! There was a microwave, toaster and very basic kitchen and dining equipment [although more was available on request]. Full sized effective fridge and a small kitchen sink.
Bathroom small and bath very low with a shower over - anyone with limited mobility would have an issue getting in/out of the bath. Plenty of good quality fresh towels; although a full bath sheet would have been nice. Shower powerful and effective.
Large closet with safe large enough for a small laptop. Don't do TV myself but it is state of the art and huge.
The neighbourhood is great - local feel, very safe and M104 bus gets you downtown quickly - $27 metro card covers all public transport all week - BARGAIN! Diner next door excellent for basic meals, superb [huge] breakfast deals, good value dinner. Lots of other dining options within an easy walk casual to top end. Great range of day to day shops - supermarket over the road wonderful! All staff were very helpful and responsive - a late check out was no problem. Main negative was internet access wi fi charged daily, no discounts for longer and no flexible time block plans. Good connection but $9.95 a day is steep and adds up over the week - would prefer to purchase 10 or 20 hours to use as required.
Overall though this hotel offers excellent value and if I'm in New York again no doubt at all that I'll stay here - a tiny room in a busy, noisy mid town location could easily cost double. Here you really can feel part of the city away from the main tourist trail.

Stayed here for 4 nights, wonderful hotel really comfortable. Kept in good order, roomy, and excellent service from the staff. It is in a quiet location but only 30mins walk from Times Square, if you feel like walking. There is a fabulous restaurant next door which has a huge choice of dishes on it's menu and a supermarket across the road in which you can buy food and take back and cook in your room if you wish. Great hotel really enjoyed our stay there and would use it again.

We just returned from a long weekend in New York with kids (8 and 12). We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite at the Hotel Beacon. Our experience was similar to the other positive reviews here. The suite had a bedroom with a king bed, and a second bedroom with two queens - a perfect fit for our family and all very comfortable. The 2 bathrooms (small but nice) are both in a short hall between the bedrooms and a living room that adjoins a kitchenette. The suite was quiet with virtually no street noise unless we opened a window (a nice option). The suite, while not the Plaza, was very pleasant ( 3 flat screen tvs) and we had no complaints. The location as everyone remarks is terrific. Fairway across the street, Starbucks on the corner, close to the subway, Central Park and Natural History Museum; easy to grab cabs to and from. Loved the neighborhood and our stay. Will book here again.
