“Perfect For Us”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2013

We have visited New York several times and always stayed at the Warwick, but we were priced out this time so I checked out other options. Although it was still pricey since it was Manhattan in December, the Beacon was priced much better than any other hotel I looked at. I'm pretty picky about location and cleanliness but decided to take a chance. I wasn't disappointed! Although it is a short subway ride away from Midtown, we loved being on the Upper West Side. The hotel is a quick half-block from the Red Line, 1,2, and 3,( two of which are Express so only two stops from Penn Station.) The Red Line runs all the way to South Ferry so we never had to change lines which was convenient and less expensive. If this is your first visit, don't try to do New York without a Metro Pass. Get a Streetwise Map of Manhattan and learn the subway system to save money and time.
We stayed 4 nights, were upgraded to a suite and we couldn't have been more satisfied. We had 3 closets, two televisions, (not that we were there to watch a lot) and we loved having the kitchenette. Do yourself a favor and go across the street to Fairway Market and have them slice you a loaf of their cinnamon raisin bread. Fantastic! If they are closed, Duane Reade Pharmacy, just a half block away, has some groceries. We loved having a leisurely breakfast in our room with a complimentary USA Today before starting our busy days. Although I think the hotel was fully booked, we didn't hear a peep from anyone. The king bed and pillows were heavenly and we slept soundly. The room, and the furnishings, although not new, were very clean.
The elevators are swift for such an old building. The staff was friendly, greeted us each time we came in, and the maid service was very good. Lots of hot water for both of us. The bathroom is small but since we had lots of storage and the sink in the kitchen it wasn't a big deal.
We definitely recommend the Beacon!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a King bed.

I admit I was a bit sceptical with the consistently good reviews of this hotel but I am delighted to say I was totally impressed with the room, the hotel and the location. First impressions were excellent. The concierge helpful and friendly, the reception staff equally so and the one bedroomed suite was spacious, light and airy. Cleanliness was impeccable, even to the point that the shower curtain was changed daily. Dirty crock/utensils are taken away and replaced with clean ones. There's even a kettle to boil on the full sized cooker so take some 'Yorkshire' tea bags, buy some fresh milk from Fairway directly opposite, and bliss, a proper cuppa. For coffee lovers the hotel supplies a Kurig coffee machine with pods. There are not many hotel beds which I can say I like, but, the beds in this hotel were so comfy, they were an absolute delight after a hard day in NYC. Heating / cooling was efficient and easy to use. Windows opened if you wanted fresh air. The bathroom was compact in size but the shower (fixed head) was powerful and the bath just about big enough to soak away those aching muscles. Storage in the suite was very good with one of two closets accommodating the digital safe which was big enough to take a laptop. Two large digital TV's, an IPAD docking station/alarm clock and iron/board completed the useful commodities. Fittings were of an extremely high standard. The location is lovely with bus and subway on the doorstep and lots of shops, diners and restaurants to choose from. The Beacon Bar is delightful. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough, it certainly ticked all my boxes and provided a real home from home comfortable holiday.

This is now our second stay at the Hotel Beacon and it wont be the last. From the moment we check in we feel right at home. Every staff member we have had the pleasure of dealing with has been fantastic. We love the position and everything about this hotel. Thank you again, we could not recommend The Hotel Beacon highly enough.

Room Tip: Our room had a fantastic classic NYC view over Broadway.... I could not stop taking photos!

We traveled to NYC for Thanksgiving weekend and were looking for a good location, value and space for a family of four. Our room consisted of small bathroom, separate sitting room with fold out sofa and bedroom with two full size beds. As an added bonus, we had a galley kitchen with regular size refrigerator, sink, stove top and microwave. Just one long block from the 72nd street subway station, we were very pleased with the location. With a large market across the street and Trader Joe's a block away, the kitchenette came in handy and allowed for a bit of cost savings.

If we could change anything it would be queen beds instead of full in the bedroom and a better TV system. All in all, we will definitely recommend to our friends.

We stayed here as a family of 3 adults and were very impressed with the hotel and staff.
The room was a 1 bedroom suite which had a bedroom and a seperate living area with a pull out bed and kitchenette.
The entrance hallway had 2 wardrobes and there was also 1 inside the bedroom, and also access to the toilet was here.
We had a couple of problems with the aircon and the tv (Which there were 2) which were dealt with by the front desk very quickly.
The room and hotel were very clean and comfortable with a great location for most of New York city but taxi's were common on the road nearby.

Room Tip: Ask for one facing the Hudson river

We stayed at Hotel Beacon for 6 nights. The hotel is in a good location and easy access to other parts of New York. We stayed in a 1bedroom while the room was clean and comfortable the bathroom was small and air conditioner was noisy. We ate at cafe viande which is just next door which was reasonably priced. As per other posts the walls between rooms are thin. The subway is just a short 2 minute walk and the hotel can assist with metro cards. We would definitely stay here again..

First, let me say that we had booked not one, but three rooms, so that we could accommodate eight of us for Thanksgiving. Making it more complicated is the fact that two rooms were for Wednesday and Thursday, and the other was for Thursday, which was then extended for Friday night as well. And that makes for accolades to the desk staff who had to make several adjustments--without a whimper. Our room was a studio, since it was for only my wife and me. It was on the 7th floor with nothing by way of a view. Another was a suite, also on floor 7. The last, however, was a suite on the 25th floor, with a great view of Broadway and even the Hudson; so a strong recommendation is to go as high as you can get.

The rooms were very nicely decorated, furnished and maintained. The refrigerator, stove and Keurig were nice to have--as well as a small in-room safe. I would add that the price difference between a studio and a suite is small enough that, for more comfort (couch and chairs), I'd opt for a suite now that I've seen both.

A negative is the fact that the walls between rooms are just a bit too thin (We had a baby close enough that we heard it scream what seemed like most of the night).

In the winter you don't want to hang out in the lobby, since it gets very cold. Actually, the well-appointed bar is a good place to hang out, since you can get bar food, coffee and espresso drinks as well as alcohol. My one negative experience there came shortly after we checked in, when we were told that half-price drinks for Happy Hour were on offer. So when I found, as I was paying for a Beefeater gin and tonic, that it was $13, I inquired and was told, for the first time, that only certain drinks got Happy Hour prices. Caveat emptor indeed! Ask before you order.

The hotel has no restaurant, and the bar is not open for breakfast, but there are several near-by restaurants at which you can get a very good breakfast. In fact, directly next door is the Cafe Viand. Very good food, but try not to get there at peak hours, since it gets pretty crowded.

Room Tip: The higher the better, and the suites are worth the price difference.
