“Great Location & Kitchenette”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

We traveled to NYC for Thanksgiving weekend and were looking for a good location, value and space for a family of four. Our room consisted of small bathroom, separate sitting room with fold out sofa and bedroom with two full size beds. As an added bonus, we had a galley kitchen with regular size refrigerator, sink, stove top and microwave. Just one long block from the 72nd street subway station, we were very pleased with the location. With a large market across the street and Trader Joe's a block away, the kitchenette came in handy and allowed for a bit of cost savings.

If we could change anything it would be queen beds instead of full in the bedroom and a better TV system. All in all, we will definitely recommend to our friends.

We stayed here as a family of 3 adults and were very impressed with the hotel and staff.
The room was a 1 bedroom suite which had a bedroom and a seperate living area with a pull out bed and kitchenette.
The entrance hallway had 2 wardrobes and there was also 1 inside the bedroom, and also access to the toilet was here.
We had a couple of problems with the aircon and the tv (Which there were 2) which were dealt with by the front desk very quickly.
The room and hotel were very clean and comfortable with a great location for most of New York city but taxi's were common on the road nearby.

Room Tip: Ask for one facing the Hudson river

We stayed at Hotel Beacon for 6 nights. The hotel is in a good location and easy access to other parts of New York. We stayed in a 1bedroom while the room was clean and comfortable the bathroom was small and air conditioner was noisy. We ate at cafe viande which is just next door which was reasonably priced. As per other posts the walls between rooms are thin. The subway is just a short 2 minute walk and the hotel can assist with metro cards. We would definitely stay here again..

First, let me say that we had booked not one, but three rooms, so that we could accommodate eight of us for Thanksgiving. Making it more complicated is the fact that two rooms were for Wednesday and Thursday, and the other was for Thursday, which was then extended for Friday night as well. And that makes for accolades to the desk staff who had to make several adjustments--without a whimper. Our room was a studio, since it was for only my wife and me. It was on the 7th floor with nothing by way of a view. Another was a suite, also on floor 7. The last, however, was a suite on the 25th floor, with a great view of Broadway and even the Hudson; so a strong recommendation is to go as high as you can get.

The rooms were very nicely decorated, furnished and maintained. The refrigerator, stove and Keurig were nice to have--as well as a small in-room safe. I would add that the price difference between a studio and a suite is small enough that, for more comfort (couch and chairs), I'd opt for a suite now that I've seen both.

A negative is the fact that the walls between rooms are just a bit too thin (We had a baby close enough that we heard it scream what seemed like most of the night).

In the winter you don't want to hang out in the lobby, since it gets very cold. Actually, the well-appointed bar is a good place to hang out, since you can get bar food, coffee and espresso drinks as well as alcohol. My one negative experience there came shortly after we checked in, when we were told that half-price drinks for Happy Hour were on offer. So when I found, as I was paying for a Beefeater gin and tonic, that it was $13, I inquired and was told, for the first time, that only certain drinks got Happy Hour prices. Caveat emptor indeed! Ask before you order.

The hotel has no restaurant, and the bar is not open for breakfast, but there are several near-by restaurants at which you can get a very good breakfast. In fact, directly next door is the Cafe Viand. Very good food, but try not to get there at peak hours, since it gets pretty crowded.

Room Tip: The higher the better, and the suites are worth the price difference.

We have just returned from a 7 night stay at the Beacon. It truly was wonderful. We had a lovely studio room on the 16th floor. The room was impeccably cleaned everyday and the newspaper every morning was a nice touch. The kitchenette is a great addition although we never used it opting instead to eat at Café Viand every morning (located right beside the hotel). We didn't use the concierge at all however, they were always cheerful and friendly. The location for me was the biggest plus of all. The hotel is about a 2 minute stroll to the 72nd street Subway station with easy access to Times Sq etc. We bought the 7 day metro card and it was the best idea as we used the subway up to 10 times a day!! The location on the upper west side means that you are away from the craziness of times sq. etc which is great for a good night sleep but not too far away from the hustle and bustle. For me, I wouldn't even look at staying anywhere else when we come back again.

My daughter and I stayed 8 nights at the Beacon, I had deliberately chosen this hotel for its spacious self contained rooms and was not disappointed. We had a one bedroom apartment and there was plenty of room for mum and teenage daughter to find their own space. Plenty of storage and room for suitcases and clothes, small kitchen and medium sized bathroom but all well equipped.
The rooms were very quiet except for the noise from the lifts(our room backed straight onto the lift well) and had windows that could be opened.
It is a low touch hotel, and the front office and door staff don't say much but are effective, but we found the two gentleman working the concierge desk excellent, their information was good and the items booked for us were reasonably priced (I would say cheap compared to how they looked on some websites from Australia.)
The area is fantastic with 72nd st station a block away with an express train to times square, literally 5 minutes away. There is a great supermarket across the road, and an abundance of restaurants, diners and takeaway in short walking distance.
Overall this was a great place to stay and I could hardly fault the hotel, it was clean, the housekeeping good, the beds and pillows good and, a kettle and coffee machine! A few small things like wine glasses and a sharp knife could be added to the kitchen. There were some minor repairs to be made, but petty in the scheme of things. There is also an inhouse laundry with very good quality equipment that is very reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Ask to be away from the lift well. We were on level 12 and besides that there was no noise.

We spent a very enjoyable week at the Beacon. Our room was comfortable and well-furnished.
The hotel is well maintained. The location is wonderful -- just 2 blocks from a subway express
stop, and you can walk to Lincoln Center. Our room had a very adequate kitchenette, so we had our breakfasts there. The desk staff was friendly and helpful.

You should know that this hotel has no room service and no dining facility of any kind. we didn't epect that, and it was no problem. There is an excellent local restaurant right next door and a gourmet take-out across the street.

I have only two negative remarks, and neither may concern you. I am a coffee lover, and brought my own coffee with me. The kitchenette, however, has a coffee machine that only can work with the capsules the hotel
supplies. And we are used to having the New york Times to read at breakfast, but it isn't possible to have newspaper delivery.

If the rating permitted fractions, I'd rate the Beacon 4.5. The acid test of a hotel is always: would you stay there again? We have already booked there for our next trip to NYC.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor- you'll get a view of Broadway facing east and possibly of the Hudson River...
