Their letterhead says "the jewel of New York " and it is absolutely true. We always enjoyed staying here with our sons when they were younger and now that they have renovated the rooms this hotel is better than ever. We always appreciated the residential upper west side location across from the best supermarket in the city (fairway), and a few blocks from the subway, and all the space of the apartment style suites even when the rooms were quite frankly very tired. The new decor is terrific.
Still nothing luxurious but considerably more stylish and the most practical hotel furniture I've ever seen. The coffee table and end tables all have large open storage under the table top, so you can stow away so much of your luggage or purchases. Two closets with lots of removable good quality hangars means we can steam several outfits and hang them wrinkle free and hang up coats and jackets. A large bureau in the bedroom. The work desk is large and the desk chair is extremely comfortable and a perfect task chair for working, vs. lounging. The kitchenette is clean with a full sized fridge and stocked with plates, cups, utensils. We love to eat a light breakfast in the room and there are so many places to pick up supplies and a Starbucks on the corner. When our kids travelled with us, it was fantastic to bring leftovers back from restaurants, store them in the fridge and reheat in the stove or microwave for snacks.
The bathrooms are very tiny, and the towels are just ok, but they are well stocked with toiletries and the counter space is decent. Lighting is outstanding - the best I've ever seen in a hotel with good overhead and excellent placement of lamps (the new glass bases are very stylish). Given that most of the rooms don't have sunny exposures , (don't expect views) and our living room looked out onto a shaft, lighting makes all the difference between dingy and bright and cheery. Rooms are pretty quiet although for the first time we could hear our neighbours through our bedroom wall although fortunately we were on the same schedule so it wasn't an issue. Mentioned it to the hotel as this has not been a problem before - We were in 601.
We stayed 3 nights, but with all the space and amenities, this is a hotel you could easily stay at for longer stays and never feel cramped. The bed and pillows were very comfortable . The climate control worked well and was easy to adjust. Very helpful and pleasant staff. If you are driving, parking is nearby for $40 /night.
