“good rooms, good price, but maybe not right for everyone”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

For us, this was a thumbs-up: a good-size room with good in-room amenities at a good price for NYC. But the hotel itself is lacking a lot of the amenities of a larger hotel, and it isn't in a great location for most tourists.
Whether the Hotel Beacon will make sense for you depends on what you want/need.

PROS:

- Reasonable prices for larger-than-average rooms by NYC standards. We paid $205 base rate, reflecting a slight discount, for a queen bed room.
The room had a kitchenette (an actual electric range, sink, fridge, plates and silverware) and a full bathtub, which you don't always get in NYC.
- Rooms clean and new in addition to being a good size for NYC
- Very up-to-date digital TV box (supports Apple TV streaming from laptop)
- Staff were friendly enough

CONS:
- No gym

- No restaurant/room service (so you'll be wanting to use that kitchenette. But there's a good supermarket, Fairway, directly across the street. Be healthy and save yourself some money!)

- Not the greatest location for tourists. Upper West Side is more residential; it's safe and quiet, but not close to anything touristy. This was fine for us, as we used to live in NYC and were just in town for business in the neighborhood, so we knew how to get around and what to expect, but if you're coming from overseas and don't know NYC, don't expect any tourist attractions to be walking distance. (Having said that, 72d St subway station is a couple of blocks away; if you catch the express train, Times Square is 1 stop away.)

- Not great sound insulation. Could very clearly hear the kids crying in the next room.

Stayed at the Beacon for 5 nights with my sister in law. We had a room with 2 double beds, on the 14th floor. Beds really comfortable, everything spotlessly clean. Loved having the kitchenette although we only used it for drinks. Specially liked the coffee machine and provision of a kettle, tea being very important to both of us! Housekeeping even sent up extra teabags on request at 5.30a.m when we were suffering from jetlag! All the staff we spoke to were friendly and helpful, especially the doorman.

Great location, a couple of blocks from subway, huge variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, etc on the doorstep, with a good diner, Viand, adjacent for breakfast. We also had one of our best dinners here. Very close to Central Park. Upper West Side is a great neighbourhood, will definitely be visiting again.

Normally NYC hotel rooms are so small that my husband and I have usually don't stay overnight with our 2 kids. We took a chance based on reviews of this hotel and the chance payed off.

The hotel room we stayed in had two good sized rooms. One room had a couch (sleeper sofa), basic living room furniture, 2 comfy chairs, desk, TV (with dresser underneath), full kitchenette, small eating table with 2 chairs and large window. It was a very nice and comfortable sized room for our family of 4 to hang out in.

The other room had 2 full sized beds, TV, dresser, nightstand, closet and a large window. The hotel room had an average size bathroom, and 2 additional closets in the hallway.

This hotel room had an apartment feel to it. My husband and I were able to hang out and watch TV in the "living room" when we put our 2 young children to bed. The furniture throughout was modern and everything was very clean.

Also, the staff was very nice and helpful.

When my husband and I go to NYC we normally stay downtown, but this Upper West Side location was good for visiting the museums we wanted to visit with the kids. The Museum of Natural History is a very short walk from the hotel. There is also a decent diner right next to the hotel, a Starbucks that you could throw a rock to and a grocery store right across the street. The best part about this location is how close the subway station is to the hotel. 2 or 3 very short blocks. So close that we didn't even have time to get cold!

When traveling to NYC with our kids, we will definitely be staying at the Hotel Beacon again.

Sidebar: If you have kids and have not been to the Museum of Mathematics, you need to go. It was awesome.

We stayed here as the last leg of our honeymoon. We had travelled to Mexico and throughout the U.S. not one hotel acknowledged our recent wedding and honeymoon until we reached beacon. We were congratulated, then we got to our room with a box of delicious chocolates and a bottle of beautiful champagne. From the minute we got out of our terrible transfer car until the second we left we were made to feel special.
The staff are amazing, friendly, happy and easy to talk too. The rooms are large however bathrooms are small (which isn't an issue as most people don't spend a lot of time hopefully there). The location is great. We ate at many local places that were amazing. One place was highly recommended by the staff Coppola's Italian can't recommend this high enough.
All up a brilliant stay and when returning to NYC we would most likely return.

I love this hotel, it's close to the subway, across the street from a great market with a take out section, fresh fruit, cheeses etc., everything you need, Located in a residential area with lots of nice neighborhood restaurants on and off Broadway. 3 blocks from Strawberry Fields. Great, helpful staff, comfortable rooms: same price as the Holiday Inn at Columbus Circle, but you get more room, a small kitchen and feel like you are in a small hotel.

Room Tip: corner suites are great

We have been staying at the Beacon with its very friendly staff and excellent location for several years. Now the place has been refurbished, its even better value. We have stayed in one or two other places in New York but nothing compares to THE BEACON!

Lovely rooms, sometimes very very spacious but never disappointing.
The chance to shop over the road at the all night and all day supermarket and then make something in the kitchenette while relaxing is great. Its warm enough and comfortable enough to lounge about in your room.

The area has undergone many changes,Filenes basement and our favourite dinner for breakfast have gone but new places are springing up. Central park is very handy and the metro is just steps from the door. A real winner. Going back in May for ten days this year.

We found this New York hotel to be good value for money, the suites are a fantastic space for a family with teenagers, clean and modern with all the necessary amenities you would expect. It is not tired and shabby looking like so many other hotels in this wonderful city. It is situated in a residential district near Central Park , so if you want to stay away from the bustle of Times square but still be accessible for all the major sights, this hotel is ideal.
