Very nice hotel with comfortable beds marble baths and very clean. Also robe, slippers in room plus ample toiletries. We enjoyed brunch and jazz the next morning. Quiet room for the city felt like a peaceful oasis near the Empire State Building. Would stay again.

Room Tip: Request smoke free if desired, some rooms allow smoking

The room was not luxurious but the x-tras were. Received white glove service upon checking in. In-room, loved the toiletries (including a much needed sewing kit), umbrella, quality green tea and my fav, a robe. A very nice Japanese feel, due to the impeccable service. The best part of our stay was going to the Jazz Club. A wonderful Brazilian ensemble was playing, and it was exquisite. The food a bit pricey but good. The area felt mainly residential and many of the patrons at the Club were "locals", giving it a nice neighborhood feel.

Room Tip: Go to the Jazz Club.

I stayed with my wife on a business trip this past week at The Kitano. It was a quality experience. The room was slightly more spacious than the average Manhattan/NYC hotel room. It was also nice that the windows were able to open, so that we could enjoy the city sounds and fresh air on a great fall weekend.

There were a variety of restaurants within walking distance. Very quiet, serene hotel. The staff was non-obtrusive, but friendly when called upon. I would definitely return to The Kitano and recommend it to others.

I reviewed this property a year or so back but I've just returned and thought it worth an update.

The thing I love about The Kitano after something like 15 trips to New York is its tranquil atmosphere. It's a real oasis, and yet everything central Manhattan has to offer is a walk away.

And I've never slept as well in a Manhattan hotel (even the best of them can be noisy) as I have on my two stays at The Kitano.

A few minor gripes. The hotel still charges for wi-fi. Come on guys, this is 2012, you are a premium property and this is just ridiculous. What's it going to cost you to throw in complimentary Internet access for guests?

It also has a late check-in (15.00) and earlier than usual check-out (11.00), although to be fair I arrived around 12.30, a room was available and there was no problem.

The hotel seems to keep it something of a secret but if you have a late flight and want to shower and change before leaving they have an arrangement with a nearby gym and will give you a pass. It's a couple of blocks walk but better than nothing if you've had a hard day's shopping or sightseeing and want to freshen up.

If you're a jazz lover the hotel has a reputation as one of the best places in the city to hear some music over a drink (minimum charges apply).

In summary, if you can get The Kitano at a good price (the rack rate is, for many, a complete budget breaker) then you probably won't do better.

Stayed for four nights (week and weekend) and was impressed by how serene the hotel is. Great location on Park Avenue. Room on the fourth floor was very quiet and clean. Note that since it is a Japanese hotel, everything in the room is designed and laid out to cater to the Japanese clientele (including lower bed height, desk height, etc.). We had free green tea in the room but not coffee!! The bathroom was very clean and well appointed. Had a pleasant stay and will return if in the area.

We stayed as a family in August after having stayed previously. We arrived early afternoon, the first room we were given had stains on the carpet and curtains. We asked to change rooms and the second was fine. we did not eat at the hotel, but ate in a diner a couple of blocks away which was excellent. The hotel is near Grand Central so is easy for the subway and great for exploring both lower and upper Manhatten. Other hotels which I have stayed in in America, the porters always offer to assist with luggage when arriving and offer help to your room with the luggage, however on both occaisions I have stayed at this hotel, nobody did, and was out on the pavement chatting to what looked liked friends. The second room had good views of the Empire State Building.

I often stay in boutique hotels in Manhattan when I travel there 4-5 times a year. I was pleasantly surprised by this little gem. Everything I was looking for; great location (2 blocks from Grand Central etc.); super quiet neighborhood at night but walking distance to restaurants and bars, very well-maintained small hotel environment. Free WIFI is a plus. Free gym at Equinox nearby. Excellent sushi restaurant in the lower level, and Jazz at the Kitano in the dining room at night. Room was spacious (by NY standards), very neat and quiet. Staff could have been a bit friendlier but overall I would (and have) recommend the hotel for any business or vacation traveler.
