Despite their good location their star rating was inaccurate . Staff were not friendly or helpful. There are no minibars or coffee machines in the rooms and the promise of overnight shoe cleaning failed to materialise.
Should you return to the hotel during the day you will find that there is no heating in the rooms.also room not made up at three in the afternoon.

Beds comfortable, breakfast buffet at $17 reasonable.

Pleasant room, with nice view. Hotel reception staff were all lovely, full of information and rear sense of humour too. Very helpful, would stay here again. Great location as we were able to walk into Central Park and the zoo, and then also all the way to the Rockefeller centre.

My husband, our 2.5 year old, and I stayed here for four nights last week on my birthday trip to NYC. I picked this hotel mainly because of its proximity to Central Park and its location in the UWS (Upper West Side). The location was ideal for our family at this stage. Though I am no stranger to NYC, this was our first time staying in Manhattan with our toddler. I would highly recommend this hotel for families with young children. I would also recommend it to just about anyone wanting to stay in Manhattan, but not in the craziness that is Times Square. Although we did have a little issue with the heater/thermostat (it would get very warm in the room), the hotel staff was very prompt in fixing the problem.

The hotel is located close to 81st and Columbus and it is in very easy walking distance to great restaurants/cafes/delis, the B/C train station, shopping (including a toy store or two), as well as right across the street from the American Museum of Natural History. Only two things would have catapulted our stay to a level beyond excellent: 1) free mini-refrigerator and 2) free Wi-Fi. Even without those things, our hotel stay was lovely.

I've stayed in different parts of the City--from Chinatown to the UWS (on different occasions)--this was a great, clean hotel in one of the best neighborhoods in Manhattan (IMO). I can't wait for our next trip to NYC--we would LOVE to stay here again!

We stayed here on our first trip to New York, the location was superb and after a long flight , trying to stay up with the time difference we went to the natural history museum just across the road. The hotel was lovely, the room was a bit small but was very comfortable. The only thing that was missing was a coffee making facility . I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Stayed at the Excelsior again this year for 4 nights. Great location across the street from the Museum of Natural History. Very quiet location (10th floor) Three Starbucks within 3 blocks. Room very clean. A/C a little eon the noisy side but certainly tolerable. Free WiFi on first and second floors otherwise they charge for WiFi in the rooms.

Loved everything about this hotel. Half block from subway, Central Park, right across the street from Museum and Planetarium. Lots of dogs and babies, great residential neighborhood, tons of restaurants (expensive, but it's New York). We felt extremely safe (lived on Upper West Side in 1950s when it was dangerous and scary but beautifully gentrified today). Beautiful, spacious bedroom and sitting room, lots of storage space, every possible amenity, helpful front desk. Even an umbrella in the closet! Reasonable price for what you get.

Wonderful hotel for remarkably reasonable price, right across street from Central Park on upper west side. Rooms small but higher rooms on park side have great views. Clean, beautiful tiled bathrooms. Feels both elegant and friendly. Subway just a block away. All in all, the perfect place from which to enjoy this great city!

Room Tip: Try for a room on the park side. Worth paying a bit more.
