“Lovely hotel - same about the distance”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2013

Lovel hotel - clean and quiet but about 2 miles + from Time Square - we walked!! taxi was $20 each way.
Hotel has stopped room service and no tea and coffee in room anymore. Restaurant is not part of the hotel - limited menu - one choice for veggies and 99% is fish - not cheap!!
I am not able to use a lift - requested low floor and got the 3rd so very happy with that.

Would recommend if you like walking but take your own travel kettle and supplies!!

Room Tip: Lovely hotel but no room service - no tea for coffee facilities.

We stayed at the Excelsior Hotel for 3 nights on 16th September 2013. Hotel is really well presented and great location. We arrived to check in and one male member of the reception staff was so unhelpful! Can't fault the other staff! Rooms were spotless with everything you need. Bed comfortable. Our room was facing the road with a view of the side of the National History Museum. It was a busy road but had no problem in sleeping. Free wifi available on first and second floor. Subway at end of street 2 min walk if that. We travelled by the Sub on a daily basis. $30 for a 7 day pass. If you come out the hotel turn right to the end of the road and turn left you will find Andy's Deli. Fab cheap breakfast! The hotel charges $17 for a breakfast but Andy's Deli also deliver to your hotel room! Had an enjoyable stay at the Excelsior Hotel.

This was our first hotel on our US holiday, we stayed for 2 nights.
It is located almost next to Central Park and a 2 minute walk from the Metro to get further into the city.
It's an old building, but incredibly well presented. Service was very good and the room was superb, with 2 huge double beds and a very large suite.
Spare plug sockets for charging phones were limited, we unplugged a couple of lamps.
Only 2 lifts, both of which were small and they are very slow, 1 of which was out of service on our first day.
A great hotel, a bit out of the way if you're wanting to tour the City Centre (Times Square etc) but the metro is brilliant.

The location could not be better for visiting The Museum of Natural History, Hayden Planetarium, or Central Park. It is surrounded by excellent restaurants and the refined atmosphere of the upper west side. The hotel itself is fine. It's clean enough, the bedding is okay, just manage your expectations. The hotel old and the elevators are slow. The bellman are excellent, we had a lot of gear. Parking is reasonable as they have an agreement with the museum lot directly across from the hotel. If you can get an acceptable rate it is a good choice for the area.

Hotel quality is rather nice. They've gone for an old world look which works on the surface, but it needs some behind the scenes love and freshening up.
Location - 81st street. About 30-45 minutes walk (fast walking!) from where the life of NYC begins at the bottom of Central Park, so if you want to walk it, be prepared for a long one!
Rooms - clean and tidy and made up every day. Could do with a small fridge and tea/coffee making facility but no complaints.
Food - A Spanish restaurant with limited choices for evening dinner, did not cater for the more generic taste. Breakfast - below average with limited choices considering that it cost $17.
Staff - the nicest staff we met were the maids, bell boys and Liz the Concierge. Restaurant staff and reception staff were rather miserable (although never rude)!
Hotel in general - nice on the surface. Behind the scenes.....needs more than one tiny restroom, especially when a coach party arrived and other hotel guests could not access the restroom. The stairs look more like staff access stairs rather than guest access stairs. They actually look like you should not use them.
In general - I would stay here again if I had to, but due to it being so far out of mid town I would choose to pay more money to be able to stay closer to the life of the city.

Can not say a bad thing about this hotel! We usually stay in budget accomodation but decided to splurge in NYC and we weren't disappointed. We stayed here for 7 nights, and were upgraded to the King Suite for free. The neighbourhood of the upper west side was certainly the pick. Just a regular quite neighbourhood away from the hustle bustle of downtown Times Square, yet was easily accessible to this as there was a subway entrance at the end of the street. There is plenty of eateries, bars, supermarkets and shops around the hotel too if you just want to stay around this area, and with its close proximity to Central Park, makes a nice spot for a picnic lunch.

I think this is oldfashion hotel.
1) The location is close to central park, national museum, colombus street, and amsterdam street.the subway approximally 200-300 meters from the hotel. just remember, that the hotel is in upper town, if you want go to time square, you need choose subway to downtown direction. If you want to go to time square with taxi, it's only use 10-12 dollars (1taxi can use for 4 persons)
2) The staff in lobby, some of them are friendly, some not!
3) the breakfast is 17,5 dollar. I recommended to have breakfast outside, because so many cafe shop open in the morning. The Starbuck just cross the street. And the other cafe shop just walking 200-300 meters from the hotel.
4) you can put your suitcase in the concierge's hotel with 2 dollars/pax/night.
5) the room is small and old design interior but have comfortable bed.
