“Old charm”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

Spent about 5 nights there, felt like I was stepping back in time when we walked in, noisy air conditioners small room, no fridge, the bathroom had exhaust fan, no room to put your toiletries..very small. Very quaint hotel. Would not recommend the Buffett breakfast not much variety coffee was Luke warm, hot chocolate was packet mix. Excellent points close to Central Park, close to the subway, easy walk to a variety of shops, staff were helpful when needed.

The front desk was rude and unaccommodating. There was a large dead cockroach in our room. Not even an apology for that. Despite the location, it's not worth the money. When we were at the front desk there were other people in front of us checking in. They were trying to joke with the person at the desk and she totally ignored them and was very rude. I will find somewhere else to stay during my trips to NY.

Spent 5 nights recently @ Excelsior. Yes, it's an older hotel, not a "cookie cutter" new property. Doesn't have exhaust fan in bathroom & some doors may "stick". I think it's part of their charm. Right across from Amer. Nat. History Museum & steps away from subway stop , Starbucks & loads of charming Upper Westside eating & shopping options. Had looked in to other Upper Westside hotels & found Excelsior to be the best value.

I was looking for a good hotel for may family vacation and I could find this great hotel, close to everywhere and not expensive.
When I went to New York in 2004, I found a hotel in the center of Manhattan that was expensive, with small rooms and not so good.
Excelsior was total opposite to these. It was quite cheap, confortable, close to Central Park and close to the center by bus.

Room Tip: I just used one room, I don't know more about others rooms.

This was our first visit to New York and we took our time to pick a hotel ,this hotel was very reasonably priced and set in a great location on west 81st across from the museum of natural history and Central Park west. When arrived staff were friendly and helpful room was on 15th floor and was huge two double beds and spacious bathroom also a handy safe in the room.It is situated in the upper west side so a little quieter than the buzz of Times Square and midtown but only a 30 min walk which is very pleasant ,also convenient subway station on same street so even easier to reach main attractions. Room serviced every day hot water fine and great air con as the temp outside was in the 80,s every day so this was welcome, when we return we will definitely stay here again as we enjoyed this hotel and the location

Room Tip: Even rooms with rear view like ours was great we were on the 15th floor so maybe ask for one which...

On the plus side: great location (in the Upper West Side, 1 block west of the north/south midpoint of Central Park & across the street from the Museum of Natural History & a subway stop is around the corner, lots of small shops & food spots nearby), nice & helpful staff, clean & decent size room with 2 double beds, comfortable beds & pillows, nice desk & desk chair & lounge chair, good lighting, phone in bathroom, iPhone/iPod compatible clock radio, small in-room safe & iron & ironing board, free WiFi on the 1st & 2nd floors, good buffet breakfast on the 2nd floor for an extra $17 per person (a bit pricy but ok if you eat most of the available items, however near nothing for a vegan diet), good small exercise room.

On the minus side: the floor squeaks badly in the room (expect to wake up your family if they are sleeping while you walk around), expensive in-room internet add-on (should have been free given the room price), no coffee maker, no refrigerator, minimal shelf space in the bathroom, bathroom window does not open to vent the room (& no exhaust fan), tiny old-fashioned round toilet instead of the more recent (1960's) & much more comfortable/functional elongated version, air conditioner totally shuts off when not cooling (so no fan mode to circulate the room air), no whirlpool in the common area (near the 2nd floor exercise room would be perfect).
