This hotel is in the perfect tourist location. Barely 50m from Central Park and the nearest subway station. Given the fragmented NY subway system, it's also within a 10 minute walk of the other subway lines, which is a must. Good bars and restaurants are only a skip away. A walk to Columbus Circle took us just over 15 minutes. Our room overlooked the Natural History Museum and Downtown skyline. You pay a little more for this view, but I think it is worth it. The room was well appointed with enough space for 2 people to live comfortably for 10 days. The room was cleaned daily, and to a high standard. Air conditioning was fitted to the room. Now a couple of small negatives. The bathroom fan was not up to the task, leading to a foggy bathroom after showering. It's also not an automatic fan, which you need to remember to start whenever you use the bathroom. The other negative was the absence of free Wifi in the rooms. Rather outdated today and this would have made a big difference to the comfort experience. There is free Wifi in the downstairs lobby but it's rather slow and unreliable. Something they should look to improve for customer experience. The hotel staff we found to be very friendly and eager to help. The exception to this was the booking agent who sits in the lobby. Unless you are wanting to book a show then he was totally disinterested and didn't reflect well on the hotel's image. A shame when the rest of the staff clearly are trying so hard. A few small niggles but overall this is a good reliable hotel offering value for a great location. Happy to recommend.

Room Tip: Recommend paying for a room facing W81st Street

We had researched many hotels in this area and decided on the Excelsior based on value for $ and location, and the look of the rooms. We were not disappointed. I requested a park view and our room on the 11th floor overlooked the park behind the Museum and to the city which was lovely. Room was adequate size and décor of the room was attractive, bathroom even better.
Location is the best...one block to the subway and Central Park and in the other direction Columbus Ave and on to Amsterdam Ave for good restaurants and cafes. It is a quiet feel good neighbourhood with little street noise.
Negative is the no coffee machine or jug.in the room..so.we brought our own. And no free Wi-Fi!
Staff were efficient without being overly friendly.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views..request a park view.

The Excelsior is in an amazing location - a block away from Central Park, right across the road from the Natural HIstory Museum and consequently only a minutes walk from the subway station. The room we were in (facing the museum) was a decent size, there is a cool restaurant on the ground floor (its not part of the hotel though so you can't charge the bill to your account) and the reception staff are nice. Amsterdam Avenue is only a short walk away with plenty of restaurants, pubs and diners.

I had a bit of an issue with the wifi - its available on a pay by the hour/day basis, and if there's any problems, the hotel staff can't help as its run by a third party company. I found this mildly irritating. Some of the fixtures, like the shower head and the iron, were getting on a bit and probably needed replacing but the reception staff did what they could.

I don't feel the need to return to this hotel myself but I'd still recommend it based on its location in this fine city.

Room Tip: The ones facing the the museum have good views.

This is a serious hotel in a great location. Short walk to the Lake in Central Park. Excellent art/craft market just round the corner. The room was excellent and very comfortable. The rooms overlooking the Museum of Natural History grounds have a great view. The staff are professional, helpful and courteous. Not the least expensive of hotels, but very nice for a special occasion.

Room Tip: south side is good overlooking Museum of Natural History

One of my top hotel choices when I'm in NYC is the Excelsior. First off, the location can't be beat! Try getting a room with a view of Central Park, Natural History Museum and the Empire State Building. Some of the rooms are small, but you're not going to be hanging out in the room much you're in NYC!

Room Tip: Have a room facing South to get a view of Central Park, Natural History Museum and the Empire State...

The Excelsior Hotel sits facing the Museum of Natural History, is 1/2 block away from Central Park, 1/2 block off of Columbus Avenue, 2 blocks from one of the best flea markets in Manhattan ( open on Saturday from 10:00 to 5:00), and is right in the middle of fabulous restaurants and museums. It's a charming old hotel, is clean, has great service, a wonderful restaurant, but the room I was in was a bit small. Based on the location and everything else I will certainly go back, but if a larger room is a must for you this might not be your favorite choice.

Room Tip: I would ask for a room facing the Museum of Natural History - very pretty!

My wife and I were quite cramped on our first day but were fortunately for us we wete able to upgrade to a larger one with an added sitting room (suite).

We booked this hotel because of its location and for that it was excellent. The service was great from Doorman to Consigner. Just beware of the cracker jacks size room for $275/day.
