Something's happened at the Excelsior Hotel and it's much appreciated! I have stayed at the Excelsior on a number of occasions, primarily because of its proximity to family - we were essentially a captive clientele. After our previous visits, I dreaded another stay. In the past, the hotel has been adequate, but not front desk personnel, or service. They were unsmiling, unwelcoming, occasionally rude, and incompetent with reservations and similar details. As guests, our behavior is consistently a mirror image of these traits. Last weekend, our stay was a very pleasant surprise! The front desk greeted us warmly, attended to questions with a smile, were exquisitely polite and helpful. Breakfast, included in the price, was a delight, the room was small but clean (the HVAC is instantly responsive, but noisy). The stay was so positive that I look forward to our next trip to New York. And, the hotel is less than a block from Central Park and within walking distance of Lincoln Center. Highly recommend for travellers to NYC who wish to avoid the mid-Manhattan crush and noise, yet want access in a few minutes by taxi.

Stayed here recently and enjoyed the experience. Across the street from the museum of natural history, Central Park west and fairly close to Lincoln center and near beacon theater. There are little touches in the room that need sprucing up and the beds are a bit lumpy. But, the staff is friendly and it's a charming property. Would stay again for a similar value without hesitation.

Beautiful location near central park. But its an old hotel and many things don't function as they should(heating, toilet). In addition, the staff is cavalier! My wife slipped and fell down the stairs due to poor lighting but staff could not be bothered till we demanded to speak to the hotel manager who promised to change the light bulbs. Not likely to stay there again.

I was wary about staying here after reading so many negative reviews about unbearable heat in the rooms. So I was pleasantly surprised by my cheery queen room with an easily adjustable heater. Granted, the heating unit is incredibly loud when it cycles on -- and it gets absurdly hot. But the temperature was fully adjustable in the room -- including the ability to turn it off.

It's an older hotel, but my room was quite sweet and perfectly adequately sized for one person (if a bit tight for two). I also really liked having a safe in the closet, which was big enough for my laptop. Service was nothing special but certainly adequate.

I stayed here for business and didn't have a choice -- but I would definitely come back on my own dime. Steps from Columbus Avenue; the location can't be beat.

We booked our stay on-line,a superior room. What they do not tell you, this room class has No view and I mean no view, you are looking at a wall 10 feet away, the property is old very old, front desk people not helpful. If you prepay your stay the front desk knows you have No options if you checkout early there is no refund. There are no refrigerators in rooms or coffee makers. The major plus for this hotel is its location, near bus and subway in a good neighborhood .Breakfast is 17.00 plus coffee. There are friendlier places to stay!

Room Tip: Get a deluxe room if you want any view, call hotel direct for a museum view.

We've been staying here for about ten years, most every time we come to NY , but we had to go cheap the last few times and we sure missed the Excelsior.. The only reason it is not a 5 is because the heating system takes some getting used to. They have a boiler that cycles on and off. So if you arrive and your room is FREEZING, the wall unit will just blow out freezing air.Kind of aggravating after a long trip. If you wait a while, set the thermostat and leave the room, you come back and it is warm as toast. We stayed two days and once the room was occupied, it was fine. Now to the good stuff.. clean, very comfortable bed, spotless bathroom. nice sized desk and good chair.. The view of the city is charming so we never pay extra for the museum view. It is quiet by city standards. The people who work here are great. The Calle Ocho restaurant that moved into the hotel within the last few years is a treat too. The subway (B, C lines) is right up the street. Lots of great places to eat and visit in the neighborhood and on Sundays is the flea market on Columbus at 79th(?) google it.. green flea market.. If you want WIFI you have to pay or you can use the free wifi in the lobby.

Room Tip: I'd go with the city view. It is the quieter side of the hotel.
