“Good location, poor service”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

The location of the hotel is spot on for many amenities within walking distance or for the metro. We were however disappointed with the attitude of two of the boys at the front desk, the very noisy ventilation system, lack of coffee in the room and size of the room. The cherry on the cake was being disturbed by the cleaning staff despite having 'do not disturb' written all over the door- this without knocking. They should also have kept their voices down during the whole morning cleaning ritual!

we moved to 3 different rooms the 1st night because the rooms were too hot or too cold. Seems there is no ability to control this. When reported to the front desk, they tried other rooms - but all with the same heat problem. We finally returned to the 1st room with no heat (in December) and threw another blanket on the bed - as that was preferable to TOO HOT TO SLEEP in the other rooms. When asked if they've heard this before, the response was no - but I couldn't help but notice the 'deer in the headlights' look. Oh, and when we were checking out, the front desk clerk received a call from another occupant complaining of banging pipes when the ac was turned on. Gee, why would the ac be turned on in the middle of winter? . . .

Room Tip: check the reviews if TOO HOT TO SLEEP is a concern?.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 days from December 12 to the 16th 2012. It was his retirement gift - we had been in New York before but never at Christmas and we were told it is worth the visit.

Chose the hotel by chance - we wanted to be close to Central Park. It is in a great location - next door from the Museum of Natural History. You can walk to Central Park - its very nice. Subway line a few steps from the front door.

The rooms are very nice - we had a corner room - it was great! The hotel has a lot of caracter - lots of wood very chic. A couple of things to know before you book - there is no room service and no fridge or mini bar in the room and no coffee maker in room either. There is a restaurant on site but we were warned by people it was very pricy and there are better deals to be had elswhere.

The remarkable thing about this hotel is that you do feel part of the neighborhood. I went out every morning - picked up coffee and breakfast and a newspaper for my husband and came back to room to enjoy - the surrounding area is great - tons and tons of restaurants and things to see.

We would stay there again - cant talk about the staff - we did not interact with them other than check-in and check out. They could be more attentive - they basically give you your keys and you dont see them again - which is ok - I guess!!

This hotel is in a great residential neighborhood; just minutes from multiple subway stations and the museum of natural history. The hotel was clean but the problem was with the heat/ac. The room was so hot and we could not get the room cool. We turned the AC on and it made a horrible noise all night. Also, go elsewhere for breakfast. The hotel charges $17 per person for breakfast and we went to the Amsterdam diner and paid $17 for four people during the week. Other than that the hotel was okay.

This is our favorite place to stay when visiting NYC. Away from the Disney-NYC of Midtown, and the adult playgrounds of The Village, Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen. This is the place to stay if you have children and want to see what living in NYC can be. Across from the Museum of Natural History (MONH), and 1/2 block to Central Park, the location cannot be beat.

Common Areas: The are small but elegant. There is a restaurant next door that can get very busy and loud in the weekends and evenings.

Rooms: The rooms were updated since our last stay, and the new decor is nice. These rooms are very old though and there will be things that one will notice even after an update. The bathroom still has some notice of the grandeur of the age of the hotel. We like the little aged feel of the hotel, but if your looking for ultra modern, brand new, then this is not your place, even though the new decor tries to be that way.

The beds were very comfortable, although, I would say that the comments made by several other reviewer are accurate. They need to do something about the heating and cooling. It is VERY erratic and noisy. This might ruin a otherwise nice stay as sleep is one of the most important parts of a hotel stay. I hope they will address these inferior heating and cooling units.

Staff: The staff is competent and helpful to a NYC standard. People from other locals might think they are stuffy or rude, but New Yonkers can just be perceived this way. The door men will get you a cab quickly. They were helpful with our bags.

Location: LOCATION! This is the main reason why we stay here. MONH and Central Park, walking distance from the front door. Several excellent restaurants, (see other reviews) right around the block. The best areas of the park are just a few minutes walk through the park. Cabs are easy to get on this street, although a walk to Amsterdam will get you where going quicker.(one way streets). There is a subway station at the end of 81st and CPW. Buses run from the front of MONH to everywhere!

TIPS: Park across the street at the MONH for a discounted rate and safe convenient parking.

Hotel, situated very close to Central Park, not far from the apartment of John Lennon. Looks gray and not elegant on the outside. Nice rooms, breakfast ok, bathroom small, no fridge in the room . TV quite small with only a few American TVchannels.

A nice hotel but somewhat outdated with old windows and not the best service I've ever had. Upon check in the clerk was complaining about her wrist hurting to another clerk instead of taking care of my wife and I. The doorman just stood there and never helped my wife with her bags. After checking in the clerk simply put the room keys on the counter and went back complaining about her wrist. I did not see her place the room keys down. So we stood there for awhile until she looked back at us and said "something else?" We requested your "best view" ... check photo!!

Room Tip: Find a hotel closer to what is going on at Christmas time and with friendlier staff!
