The Excelsior is in the perfect location. Away from the hustle and bustle. We left our windows open every night and slept soundly. They upgraded our room which was nice and big. The staff recommendations for dinner were OK.
Paying for Wifi is silly and the front desk wont print your boarding passes without you paying for it. In a hotel of this caliber, it just seems odd that it isn't complementary.

This hotel is about half way up Central Park so is quite a walk down to lower manhatten. It is about 40 minutes walk to Times Square, although there is a subway station at the end of the road and the Museum of Natural History is also just across from the hotel. Mostly, the reception staff were very helpful and accommodating. The room I stayed in was an 'upgrade' with a small sitting area, even so it was quite a small room. It was, however, comfortable and clean. The whole hotel has a very 'dated' feel to it with floral tiles in the bathroom, which is just not to my taste. Wooden panels everywhere in the reception area. There is a cuban restaurant adjacent which is very nice, although would suggest booking in advance. Overall, it was clean and the staff were helpful. If it's your first time to New York I would suggest you stay more South of Central Park area, it is more central.

We stayed for three nights after the hurricane. We found ourselves amongst hundreds of hurricane displaced New Yorkers, as well as tourists and a large group who come each year to run the marathon. I share all this to give you the sense of agitation most of the guests felt, and I must say the staff handled us all with patience and grace. We had a suite on the seventh floor over looking the museum. The spotless rooms had golden fabric covered walls, attractive prints, a large King sized bed which was very comfortable two television sets, three phones various chairs, a desk and a view of the Museum Park and beyond. Because we had been without power, we were desperate for news and except for few hours we spent all our free time in our rooms watching the news. The maid service was excellent, and housekeeping promptly brought us extra blankets when asked. Although the hotel was full with lots of families, being it is an old well-built building, it was not noisy, we barely heard a sound. The other positive I found here was I was not allergic to the room. I find in many good chain hotels I get a reaction to the stucco ceiling or fiberboard or whatever they use to build new hotel rooms. My eyes get puffy, etc. However, at The Excelsior I was gratefully, allergy free, which is no small thing, and makes me assume these used quality, non-chemically doused materials in their recent renovation. We grew attached to our golden walled rooms, they were comforting, and we’d definably return to the Excelsior.

There is no coffee/tea set-up in the room, or microwave, or mini-bar. Just three bottles of water with price tags.
They charge a daily fee for internet service. There is no room service. While the breakfast area is lovely, dark paneled wood and the coffee is excellent, you brew it by the cup yourself. The breakfast buffet offerings at seventeen dollars a person, reminded us of free city school breakfasts, served on paper plates. To improve your stay. Go across the street on Columbus Avenue and get good coffee and breakfast items. Also, bring a travel kettle if you like your tea in your room.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the Museum Park, facing south for more light and a better view.

Location couldn't be better for Natural History Museum and Central Park stroll over to the Metropolitan. Many local restaurants give you a strong neighborhood feel. Staff were wonderful. The room itself couldn't have been better.

We reserved a room at the Excelsior through a bargain website because we wanted to stay in that section of the city for a change. When we got there the hotel had upgraded our room to a suite. While we did not need much help, it was clear that the staff was nice and friendly to other guests in answering their questions. The room was very comfortable and nice. It was close to the subway but it was also easy to get a cab from this location. There was a grocery store nearby and plenty of dining options. I would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: If you can, ask for a room that overlooks the park across the street behind the Natural History Muse...

We booked the room through Hotwire, and got a good rate. Parked for free on the street across from the hotel. The lobby and bar areas are nice, as is the restaurant, which serves a very nice brunch. The room was very small, with twin beds, but comfortable. The shower was great. The hotel is very close to the Museum of Natural History and Central Park, and to Columbia University. Another reviewer said the staff was not warm, but it's New York - if you want warm and fuzzy, i'd suggest Peoria. Oddly, there is no wireless service. They have one computer, housed in what seemed like a broom closet next to the front desk, and charged $8 an hour. Overall, though, it was a nice experience at the Excelsior.

Room Tip: We had a room at the front of the hotel, with a nice view of a park.

I booked this hotel because of its reviews and location--not too far from the NYC marathon finish line. It was perfect for what I was looking for. If you're looking for trendy and hip, this is not for you. It's an old hotel that has been redone in the last two years. But it is a block from the subway, very near Central Park, very quiet neighborhood and reasonably priced. Many local restaurants are nearby. The rooms were clean, well furnished. We had a double with two queen beds. The staff was good. The bar seemed lively.

Since the marathon was cancelled, I may come back next year for the marathon. This is defnitely where I will stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a veiw of the park
