The artichoke salad is lovely and the pasta with ragu was very good. The charcuterie as an appetizer was well done. The pasta with black squid ink was okay.

The pasta was just about perfect. The crab cake appetizer was subtle and sparkled with memorable herbs and spices. The meat dishes were fine and I would especially recommend the Veal Ragout, which seemed similar in some ways to the finest of Northern Italian home-made Bolognese sauces. (Was that a hint of nutmeg in the Ragout?) In fact, the cooking style seemed generally more Northern than Southern Italian. The service was direct, informed and unhurried, but far from inattentive. While everything arrived just promptly enough, you never got the feeling of being rushed. The room was warm and welcoming, with woods and subdued lighting.

On a Friday night, I will say this relatively small place was crowded and with the tables close together, I got an occassional bump on the back of my chair from a fellow patron or a waitperson walking by. And crowded rooms in New York City mean noisy rooms with conversational tones rising to be heard amidst the din. It's funny, in general American restaurants are loud places, which is so different from restaurants in Paris where you can carry on quiet conversations because everyone else is speaking in subdued tones. Of course, a lot of Parisian restaurants have this infuriating music piped in, but thats another story.

Prices were average for a fine New York Restaurant, which means prices are high. But though you will have many Italian choices in NYC, try Spiga if you can.

Three of us had fabulous dinners at Spiga recently. The servings are large and the dishes are imaginative. The pasta with seafood was wonderfully seasoned and all the seafood was tender. The pasta with veal ragout was the best dish of its kind that we have ever eaten. And, the duck breast was superb.

The only downside is that they only accept cash or American Express so be prepared. Also, make reservations as it's a small place.

I finally went to Spiga after living in the neighborhood for years. We started with a beet salad with goat cheese which was good but not great. The vegetables were fresh but the dressing fell flat. The goat cheese on it wasn't flavorful. My main dish was delicious. It was snapper with a saffron sauce and topped with mussels. The fish was moist, fresh and the sauce was delicious without drowning out the fish. My husband tried the manicotti which had an unusual taste (in a good way.) The wine was overpriced which was a bit of a downer and the less expensive ones were not very good.
Since the food was generally good to very good and the atmosphere was pleasant and unique, it was a good choice. The staff was pleasant, professional and gave good service.
The only complaint was a fairly hefty bill.
